If I could say 1 thing to startups
![Page 2: My Best Piece of Advice to Startups](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022042722/588ae8941a28abab6c8b6845/html5/thumbnails/2.jpg)
Get the money up front
![Page 3: My Best Piece of Advice to Startups](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022042722/588ae8941a28abab6c8b6845/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
How do I do that?
![Page 4: My Best Piece of Advice to Startups](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022042722/588ae8941a28abab6c8b6845/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
Sure, it’s Easier in some
industries than others…
![Page 5: My Best Piece of Advice to Startups](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022042722/588ae8941a28abab6c8b6845/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
But make it your priority.
You’ll thank me.
![Page 6: My Best Piece of Advice to Startups](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022042722/588ae8941a28abab6c8b6845/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
Um, thanks for giving me another problem?
![Page 7: My Best Piece of Advice to Startups](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022042722/588ae8941a28abab6c8b6845/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Here’s some ideas:
1. Copy the industries where it’s a given.
Ever paid for a flight after you got home?
![Page 8: My Best Piece of Advice to Startups](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022042722/588ae8941a28abab6c8b6845/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
2. A similar idea - move as many of your sales on line
as you can.
![Page 9: My Best Piece of Advice to Startups](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022042722/588ae8941a28abab6c8b6845/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
3. Is there any escrow or trust
account system you can use?
![Page 10: My Best Piece of Advice to Startups](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022042722/588ae8941a28abab6c8b6845/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
In our industry, we send an
invoice when the work is done.
![Page 11: My Best Piece of Advice to Startups](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022042722/588ae8941a28abab6c8b6845/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
They’ve been doing that since the days of
horse and cart?
Maybe time to update?
![Page 12: My Best Piece of Advice to Startups](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022042722/588ae8941a28abab6c8b6845/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
Which brings me to point 4.
You’re in the 21st Century, do business like
you are in the 21st Century.
![Page 13: My Best Piece of Advice to Startups](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022042722/588ae8941a28abab6c8b6845/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
Point 4.
Ask for payment before you ship, or before you do the
work.
![Page 14: My Best Piece of Advice to Startups](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022042722/588ae8941a28abab6c8b6845/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
5. But if you MUST invoice after the job, how prompt is your
invoicing?
![Page 15: My Best Piece of Advice to Startups](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022042722/588ae8941a28abab6c8b6845/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
I’m doing okay. I have a lot of work. I get
around to the invoices when I
can.
![Page 16: My Best Piece of Advice to Startups](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022042722/588ae8941a28abab6c8b6845/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
No, no. no, no, no.
There’s ways to invoice from your
phone or computer as you finish the job.
![Page 17: My Best Piece of Advice to Startups](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022042722/588ae8941a28abab6c8b6845/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
6. Did you know the later an invoice arrives, the less likely it is to be
paid?
![Page 18: My Best Piece of Advice to Startups](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022042722/588ae8941a28abab6c8b6845/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
And the more likely I am to lose the paperwork for materials
used, but I’m not telling you that.
![Page 19: My Best Piece of Advice to Startups](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022042722/588ae8941a28abab6c8b6845/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
Point 7 is energy.
The customer has energy for paying at
the time of purchase.
Later, not so much.
![Page 20: My Best Piece of Advice to Startups](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022042722/588ae8941a28abab6c8b6845/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
To be honest, that’s when I
have the energy for invoicing.
![Page 21: My Best Piece of Advice to Startups](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022042722/588ae8941a28abab6c8b6845/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
Which leads me to 8. Attitude.
Your attitude.
![Page 22: My Best Piece of Advice to Startups](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022042722/588ae8941a28abab6c8b6845/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
Me? My attitude?
![Page 23: My Best Piece of Advice to Startups](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022042722/588ae8941a28abab6c8b6845/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
Yup, you.
If you think you won’t be paid, you
develop resentment, and it shows.
![Page 24: My Best Piece of Advice to Startups](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022042722/588ae8941a28abab6c8b6845/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
I thought I was doing such a good job of hiding it.
![Page 25: My Best Piece of Advice to Startups](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022042722/588ae8941a28abab6c8b6845/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)
Do a good job of doing your job,
and let people pay you what you are
worth.
![Page 26: My Best Piece of Advice to Startups](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022042722/588ae8941a28abab6c8b6845/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)
Takes us straight to Point 9
Don't undervalue your work.
It’s very valuable, so get paid for it.
![Page 27: My Best Piece of Advice to Startups](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022042722/588ae8941a28abab6c8b6845/html5/thumbnails/27.jpg)
If I could say one thing to people starting up…
Get paid for all your work.
![Page 28: My Best Piece of Advice to Startups](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022042722/588ae8941a28abab6c8b6845/html5/thumbnails/28.jpg)
MONEY UP FRONT points again:
1. Copy those who do it well. 2. Sell on line.
3. Use Escrow if you can. 4. Operate like your in C21.
5. Invoice at time of the transaction (at the latest).
![Page 29: My Best Piece of Advice to Startups](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022042722/588ae8941a28abab6c8b6845/html5/thumbnails/29.jpg)
MONEY UP FRONT points again:
6. Remember late invoicing is asking for trouble. 7. Get paid when the energy for payment is
flowing. 8. Don’t work with won’t-get-paid resentment.
9. Value your work.
![Page 30: My Best Piece of Advice to Startups](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022042722/588ae8941a28abab6c8b6845/html5/thumbnails/30.jpg)
But that’s just the experience of
old timer.
What wisdom do you have for people starting up?
