Exhibition Highlights Holiday SeasonVictorianYuletideOn View Fr iday, November 23 through Sunday, December 30

T he charm of the holidayseason is brought to lifein Fountain Elms, the1850 historic mansionthat today houses the

Museum’s decorative arts. The annualVictorian Yuletide exhibition opens Friday,November 23 when the period rooms inFountain Elms will be decorated to representChristmas as it was celebrated in the yearsbetween 1870 and 1880.

American Christmas celebrations—a blend oftraditions from a variety of ethnic origins andnative lands—present a rendezvous with cen-turies of history. The brilliance and diversityof the season will be recreated. Each periodroom will display a Yuletide vignette—fromthe anticipation of Santa Claus’s arrival to alavishly set table ready for holiday feasters to

taking down the tree. Many families ornament-ed their trees with edible treats. The cookiesand delicacies were consumed when the treewas dismantled, making that occasion asmuch of a delight as the decorating.

Yards of greenery and ribbon, sparkling glassornaments, and the riches of nature will adornFountain Elms. The finest silver and porcelainwill bedeck the dining table, toys of the periodwill be on view, and the dollhouse—-an 1856Christmas gift to Rachel and Maria Williamswho grew up in Fountain Elms—will be orna-mented.

Step into the Victorian Era and celebrate thefestive traditions of the season with a visit toFountain Elms. The Victorian Yuletide exhibitionis free and open to the public. It continuesthrough December 30.

Taking Stock, and Giving Stock

With so much focus on our presidential election this year, manyof our members are more interested than ever in tax cuts, taxrates and tax deductions. Regardless of who wins the elec-

tion and what Congress chooses to do, there is a way that you may beable to enjoy a tax savings for this year when you make a gift toMWPAI.

Most donors know that December is the last opportunity to make giftsto MWPAI in order to enjoy a charitable tax deduction on their taxes for2012. Savvy donors know that their gifts to the Institute may be evenmore tax-wise if instead of writing a check or using a credit card, theymake a gift of appreciated securities. Such a gift enables the donor totake a tax deduction for the full market value of the stock on the day itis transferred to the Institute, AND avoid any capital gains tax on theappreciation of that stock. Look at the following example to see howthis works:

• Suppose Mrs. Smith wants to join the Fountain Elms Society with agift of $1000. If she simply writes a check, and assuming she is in the33% tax bracket, her “out-of-pocket” cost would be $667 ($1000 less$333, the value of her tax deduction.)

• Now suppose instead that Mrs. Smith owns shares of XYZ Inc.,which she bought at $50 per share and is now worth $250 per share. If she gifts 4 shares of that stock to the Institute, she still gets the$333 tax deduction, plus she avoids the capital gains tax of 15% or$120 on the gain in the value of her stock. Thus, the real cost of her$1000 gift is only $547. Even more impressive is that you can consid-er that her total out-of-pocket cost was only $200, given her excellentforesight in buying XYZ, Inc. at only $50 per share.

Joe Silberlicht, the Institute’s Director of Development, is available todiscuss gifts of stock with you at your convenience. “These gifts aresimple,” he says, “and offer tremendous tax benefits to our donors.”Joe does offer two cautions, however. First, “Don’t wait until the lastminute to initiate one of these transactions. They often take severaldays or a couple of weeks to be completed by your broker, and youdon’t want to miss out on the December 31 deadline.” Second, henotes “Remember that to take full advantage of the tax benefits of thisform of giving, you must donate the stock to the Institute. Don’t makethe mistake of selling the stock first and then donating the proceeds.Doing so will expose you to the full bill for capital gains.”

You can reach Joe at 315-797-0000, extension 2297. He welcomesthe opportunity to explore tax-wise giving options with you, and all callsare confidential.
