rtist and TSTC instructor Rene Garza has adifferent view of how art should be createdand presented.

“Mas con menos. I want to do more with less, “ hesaid. Most of the pieces in his office are stencil oneuca board with spray paint and pieces of tornbillboard. The passion that drives him to create theseunique pieces is The Army of National Liberationmovement, also known as the Zapatistas.

“They stood in solidarity and said that noteverything is for sale, and that their way of life shouldnot cease to exist, nor is it irrelevant.” Garza said.“They have taken back their public space and time.Their government is one that is practiced as obeyingGovernment of Gobierno Obediciendo. I try mybest to practice Arte Obediciendo.”

In addition to Garza’s array of knowledge, art andstyles, his ultimate goal is to expose the public to art.

“Art should be accessible to everyone.” Havingshown in Matamoros, Weslaco, Austin and CorpusChristi, he said that the best places to show andmake art is in public places.” He has toured throughChiapas, Tamaulipas, Mexico while selling photos andartwork. “I paid my trip to and from by sellingphotographs,” he added.

“We usually have workshops set up at one of thecardinal points. We make shop on sidewalks or insome unoccupied buildings, “ he explained. Freeworkshops and upkeep of a virtual museum arewhat occupy his free time. Museoimenos, whichbegan August 8, 2006, is a project that exposes thepublic to art and varying styles.

Art to and for the people is his motto. “The bestworkshop took place in the marketplace inMatamoros. People who were shopping, eating andpassing by would stop to see what we were doingand eventually join in.”

Garza encourages everyone to come join hisworkshops. Participation is free to the public;donations are accepted but not required. Toparticipate, bring a posterboard, a No. 1 exacto-typeknife, a can of spray paint, some designs, andsomething to paint your image on. And rememberthe creativity!

recent ar ticle from The HoustonChronicle ("Mentors show Hispanicyouths college possible" 7/16/09)

referenced some shocking and disappointinginformation. According to the U.S. Department ofEducation’s most recent statistics, only 14.2 percentof Hispanics graduate from high school and of thatgroup only 7.2 percent of Hispanics receive abachelor’s degree, compared to 72 percent of whitestudents in 2005-2006. Living in the Rio GrandeValley, which primarily consists of a Hispanicpopulation, these national statistics may seem a bitharsh, but this is the reality.

Students, particularly Hispanic students, have ahigher risk of not completing high school andan even lower chance of pursuing post-secondary education such as an associate’sdegree or higher. Although historically thereare many social, cultural and economic obstaclesfor Hispanic students who are interested in pursuinghigher education, there are also valuable resourcesavailable to aid them in this pursuit. One suchresource available to TSTC Harlingen students is theAccess to Success student mentors.

What is mentoring? A matter of trust. Mentoring isa structured and trusting relationship that bringspeople together with caring individuals who offerguidance, support and encouragement aimed atdeveloping the competence and character of thementee. A mentor is someone who, along withfamily, provides a person with support, counsel, friendship, reinforcement and constructiveexample. Mentors are good listeners, people whocare, people who want to help people bring outstrengths that are already there. A mentor is not afoster parent, therapist, parole officer, or cool peer. The Access to Success mentors are TSTC

Harlingen students who have knowledge about thecampus as well as knowledge about differentprograms and resources to assist and support thesuccess of TSTC students.

Mentoring usually occurs in one of two forms, formal and informal mentoring. Most people havehad experience with informal mentoring at somepoint in their lives such as a teacher whoencouraged learning, a family member whosupported an idea or even a friend who was thereto listen. The Access to Success student mentorsoffer their support and knowledge in a formal

setting. Access to Success mentors are available toassist all students on the TSTC campus with issuesthat may be making their college experience difficultor frustrating such as time management, study skills, goal setting and other factors that affect learning.

Students facing a difficult time adjusting to college lifeeither as a first year student or as a returning adultstudent can utilize the mentor service on the TSTCHarlingen campus. Mentors can be found in theAcademic Achievement Center in Building D(Biomedical / Dental Laboratory Technology), Room138. Mentors are available throughout the week andtheir fall schedules will be posted campus-wide andon the Student Success Web site soon. If you orsomeone you know is having a difficult time adjustingto college life or if you are interested in help withcareer exploration, the Access to Success mentorswould be a great resource.

Another way that TSTC is working to alleviate thedisparity of the low Hispanic pursuit of post-secondary education is through a mentoringprogram aimed at local middle school students.Access to Success: Career Exploration ThroughMentoring will begin its second year for the 2009-2010 school year. Along with on-campus studentmentors, there are also middle school mentors whotravel to local school districts such as San Benito,Harlingen, La Feria, Santa Maria and San Perlita. These mentors work one on one with middleschool students to teach them about differentcareer paths in technical fields, life skills such as

resume writing and most importantly thementors are role models for theseyoung students.

All of the Access to Success mentors(on- and off-campus) participated in atwo-week summer camp with 60

middle school students. Many of these students hadnever been spoken to about college and some hadnever been informed about TSTC! Studentsparticipated in hands-on activities with variousprograms on the campus such as BiomecialEquipment Technology, Chemical-EnvironmentalTechnology and Auto Collision Technology. Middleschool students completed some educationalprojects, such as a radio that they built in the BETprogram, and generated hope for their futures inhigher education.

If you or someone you know would benefit from amentor or if you would like to be a student mentor, information can be found on the Student SuccessWeb site under "Mentoring Information" or bycalling the Mentoring Coordinator at 956.364.4164.

TECHquity participants pose with thehomemade thermometers they built while attendingthe free program at the Harlingen Public Library onJuly 22. The program, coordinated by SupportServices staff, is designed to raise interest in math andscience for children, especially girls.

Children attending the program were given ashort lesson on how a thermometer works and madetheir own to take home. Rusty the Mustang was alsoon hand to look at the children's creations.

Mentors are good listeners, peoplewho care, people who want to help peoplebring out strengths that are already there.

Culinary Arts Students BattleAnd TSTC Wins!

hile other universities are known for their football or other sportteams, here at TSTC, we pride ourselves in our various technicalcompetitions. Several of our programs compete in SkillsUSA every

year, in addition to their own exclusive competitions.

On July 24, I had the pleasure of witnessing one of these challenges. Five of ourCulinary Arts students battled STC in the first annual South Texas Iron Chef-stylecompetition at the Dodge Arena as part of a preliminary promotion for theAppetite for Education Cook-Off that was to take place the following day.

The TSTC team consisted of Captain Andrew Moreno, Cuca Torres, MarcoBerardi, Ivan Constante and Cesar Delgado. The teams were given exactly twohours to cook an entree and dessert that had to integrate a secret ingredientannounced at start-time. Five judges graded their dishes based on presentation, taste, flavor, texture, balance, and originality.

Without a doubt, this was to be a very exciting event. To help support and cheeron our TSTC team, SGA invited students and provided transportation to andfrom the event. Their initiative resulted in TSTC supporters making up more than65 percent of the spectators, despite the fact we were on STC territory. Knowingthis only fueled our crowd’s spirit and cheers.

The intensity of the crowd, however, did not distress TSTC’s team, which showedits experience and diligence. When asked if the size of the crowd had any effecton their work, Ivan Constante said, “I was so focused that I phased everybodyout. I never even noticed the crowd.”

n this sixth installment of the beloved boy who battles evilin this estranged world of wizards and magic, David Yatesis back as director joined by screen writer Steve Kloves,

who wrote the first four films. Many of the fantastic tones andeffects of the past movies are still well in place and shots thatguide you through the movie with every angle in mind.

The story picks up literally from the ending of the previousfilm and moves things along its next plot. There are somenew elements added that are known to the readers of thenovel series, but those who have not read the novels will

need to assume many things. For example, Harry Potter has now gained thetitle, as if he needed another : “The Chosen One.”

This film, though the same feel as the others, had a very different mission toexecute from its predecessors. This sixth installment was meant to dive into thepast and bring to surface the small memories that lead to this Voldemort gripped

present., as well as to indulge practically every teen romance craze that hashovered over this series.

Having said the many things that this film has accomplished, I cannot leave youwith only happy thoughts. If I had to explain the plot of this film, I would compareit to a dodo bird, nonexistent. At first I was shocked at the lack of climacticintegrity, but after some research I learned that this was due to how the bookwas written.

On top of that there were the edits done to the book that didn’t make it ontothe screenplay. I can see how many people would be quick to scoff at thepresentation of this movie, but it wasn’t so much the filmmakers as the originaltext that it derived from. This could also bring the question of how well somenovels do not translate well into major motion pictures based on the fact thatthe elements needed for either are not always executed in the same fashion.

pecial is a delectably visual film with much attention tocinematography that will leave the viewer curious aboutthe unfolding plotline. Each introducing shot contains

such a level of quirk that the viewer is visually drawn evenbefore any dialogue.

The film stars Michael Rapaport as Les, a lowly meter maid whoenrolls in a drug trial for an anti-depressant called “Special.” Thefilm does not premise his ailment, but instead takes thedirection of the supposed cure, which was a good move Ibelieve. Too much background would have swayed the tone of

the movie too heavily. In the case of Les, a one in one million adverse drugreaction occurs. The drug begins to make him believe that he possesses superpowers such as flight, telepathy and the ability to walk through walls. The storytakes many turns, including times that you are not sure who is right and who iswrong. I found myself asking, “Wait, does Les really have powers?”

In spite of the dominating hero theme, there is a lot of humanizing moralqualities to this film. Within the mishaps and good vs. evil battles, the viewer cansee Les encountering many of life’s hardships and his retort to them with thehelp of his newfound courage.

Dorothy: It’s a Tin Man!

Tin Man (Holds up his ax): Who goes there?

Dorothy: I’m Dorothy. This is Scarecrow. Who are you?

Tin Man: I don’t know, and I don’t care. (Steps back from Toto.) Get that pest away from me!

Dorothy: Tin Man! Why it’s only Toto, my dog. He’s very friendly.

Tin Man: Why I oughta… (Begins to swing ax at Toto. Scarecrow blocks him.)

Dorothy: Why, he’s only a puppy! What’s wrong with you? Have you no heart?

Tin Man: I have no heart. I hate everything because nothing ever goes right.

Scarecrow: We go see King Jesus. He give me brain. Maybe give you heart.

Tin Man: Well, I have nowhere else to go.

Tin Man joins them. The trio walks along the road, not really paying attention to their surroundings.

Lights down.

SCENE 4: Dorothy meets Lion. Change scenery. Lion, Tin Man, Dorothy, and Scarecrow in place. Lights up.

Dorothy: I don’t like this forest! It’s – it’s dark and creepy!

Scarecrow: Of course, I don’t know, but I think it gets darker before it gets lighter.

Dorothy and Tin Man stop and look at Scarecrow. They look at each other and shrug.

Dorothy: Do – do you suppose we’ll meet any animals?

Tin Man: Mmmm – we might.

Scarecrow: Animals that – that eat straw?

Tin Man: Some – but mostly lions and tigers and bears.

Dorothy: Oh! Lions, and tigers and bears! Oh, - my –

Dorothy, Scarecrow, Tin Man: Lions and tigers and bears!

Dorothy: Oh my!

Scarecrow: Oh, look!

Dorothy: Oh!

Lion ( Jumps out of bushes. Air punches like a boxer.): Hah! Put ‘em up! Put ‘em – up! Which one of you first? I’ll fight you both together, if youwant. I’ll fight ya’ with one paw tied behind my back! I’ll fight ya’ standin’ on one foot! I’ll fight ‘ya with my eyes closed. Oh, pullin’ an ax on me,eh? Sneakin’ up on me, eh? Why!

Tin Man: Go away and let us alone.

Lion: Oh, scared, huh? Afraid, huh? Hah! How long can you stay fresh in that can? Come on, get up and fight you shivering junkyard! Put yourhands up, you lop-sided bag of hay!

Scarecrow: Now that’s getting personal, Lion.

Tin Man: Yes, get up and teach him a lesson.

Scarecrow: Well, what’s wrong with you teachin’ him?

Tin Man: A – well – well, I hardly know him.

Lion (looking at Toto): Well, I’ll get you anyway, Pee Wee.

I watch you behind dimmed eyes, staring straight through your shining ones, searching, finding.I can see my reflection embedded in your center, all of the wonders and cries, unwindingI pray that some day you will realize what was important to me, even though I said it time and time againI know that there would be no better time in our lives, to show you, to lead you, to call you my friend. Then the time that the inevitable truth sinks in our minds, though painful as it may seem to beBut when try after try gets you nowhere, the conclusion to this story made big, is apparent to me.The signs I read everyday are negative and positive, attracted, yet forced apart it is to sayI wish the force left and attraction set in, so that my world will be filled with colors, instead of greyAnd you learn to be more open to the directions your life takes you, so that you will finally be feelingThe words I will tell you, to save what can be lost, in a matter most spent as time in healing. For what matters is of special connections, through fear and regret, to see what is the truthTo look out and see the brightest of stars showing your fate, what is given freely in youth.I find myself drifting away from the conscious state and I think to myself, why did it have to be like thisKnowing that it was almost something that could have changed things forever, turning all into true, peaceful, bliss. Now the time to take my leave is here and your bright shining eyes appear darker to me, I wait.I wait to see you once again as I turn away from light into darkness of heart, my path not straight. Our last goodbye could have been nothing more than just a simple farewell, but I refuse to keepThat there was nothing that could be done to help this situation, to help that of which we seekBut in stubborn thoughts with the ability to remain unchanged, I take the final slow turnAnd look toward the future with no doubt in my mind the choice was made, yet I will, for you, still yearn.
