MUST Museum of the territory Through an interactive multimedia experience the MUST museum narrates over 2000 years of Vimercate’s artistic and social history. The Museum, which has been recognised with numerous prizes and awards, houses a rich collection of archaeological finds, paintings and sculptures from the 14th to the 20th century, installations, objects and historical documents. Villa Sottocasa The neoclassical villa presents itself with its façade onto Via Vittorio Emanuele II and behind a large English style park. The noble wing of the villa, built around 1780, houses beautiful rooms frescoed in the 19th century, some of which are included as part of the MUST museum visit. Collegiate Church of Santo Stefano The Church, an important example of pre- Romanesque buildings in Northern Milan, dates back to the 10th century, while the façade is from the 16th century. The interior, redesigned by Pollack in 1807, houses many frescoes, including the grandiose cycle with Stories of the Passion of Santo Stefano (1566) by Lattanzio Gambara. Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin The interior of the shrine, rebuilt in the 17th century to house the miraculous statue of Our Lady of the Rosary, presents rich Baroque decorations. Notable chapels include the Cappella del Salvatore with works by Nuvolone and the Cappella di Santa Caterina with the painting by Gambara, as well as Rococo style furnishings. Oratory of Sant’Antonio The Church, which houses a cycle of frescoes in the International Gothic style (1460- 1480) depicting Stories of the Passion of Christ, was built in the Visconti period and restructured during the 17th century. It is home to a large canvas depicting The Glory of San Carlo with a striking view of Vimercate during the 17th century. Banfi House / Convent of S. Francesco The convent founded during the 13th century extends around the cloister and the 14th century Church, with a brick façade built later. A few frescoes in Giotto style have been preserved, including a Crucifixion and Saints dating back to 1354 and a Madonna of Mercy from the early half of the 14th century AD Villa Gallarati Scotti The Villa, one of the best examples of a Lombard stately home, was built in Baroque style and later transformed into neo-classical style. The imposing main façade opens onto the courtyard, closed on the southern side by two small classic temples. Behind the Villa the magnificent English style park extends, with the Baroque Nymphaeum of Neptune. Borromeo Hunting Lodge A large fresco cycle characterised by refined elegance adorns the walls of Villa Borromeo’s hunting lodge, featuring a series of hunting episodes interspersed with courtly scenes. The frescoes, completed around 1460 in international Gothic style, are among the most important examples of secular painting of this period. The Death of Ruginello The 18th century work centres on the theme of death, with macabre and didactic taste, yet veiled in irony. It consists of two tall panels with skeletons respectively holding a scythe and an hourglass, with four pillars with trophies composed of skulls. A scroll reads Hodie mihi, cras tibi (Today for me, tomorrow for you). Convent of S. Francesco in Oreno Founded during the 13th, the convent extends around the harmonious cloister dating back to the 16th century, while the Church of San Francesco, an elegant example of 17th century architecture, overlooks the square with the same name. The graceful Baroque bell tower characterises the Oreno landscape with its profile. Events and festivals Throughout the year Vimercate offers countless events and festivals. The calendar starts in January, with the traditional Festival of Sant’Antonio, with markets and the finale with the large bonfire. During Carnival, fancy dress parades and children’s entertainment liven up the town. Between June and August the Summer Festival is held, with outdoor theatre performances, cinema and music. On August 3 the Fair of Santo Stefano is held, patron of the city, with a fair-market and the Mass with the traditional setting on fire of the ball. September is packed with events: the Vimercate&Vino exhibition presents some of the best wines, proudly Made in Italy; the Potato Festival enlivens the village of Oreno with food stalls and historical re-enactments; the Open Villas initiative in Brianza promotes the local heritage with guided tours and various events. VIMERCATE

Vimercate, town nestled in the industrious and dynamic Brianza area, boasts over two thousand years of history. The oldest archaeological finds date back to Roman times. Important medieval remains include the Church of Santo Stefano, the Bridge of San Rocco, the only Lombard example of a roman bridge with medieval fortification and the Borromeo Hunting Lodge.Beginning in the 16th century Vimercate became a desirable location for noble summer residences such as the grandiose Villa Gallarati Scotti, Palazzo Trotti and the neoclassical Villa Sottocasa, which today houses the MUST Museum of the territory. Following the extensive social, cultural and urban transformations of the 20th century, Vimercate has succeeded in preserving and promoting its rich and valuable historical and artistic heritage, developing new cultural and tourism potential and maintaining a leading role throughout the surrounding area.
