WELCOME TO FESTIVAL 2018! A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Greater Victoria Performing Arts Festival Association, I am pleased to welcome audiences, participants and adjudicators to the 2018 Victoria Performing Arts Festival. This is the 91st year of the Festival, a measure of its success in the performing arts community in Greater Victoria. We are part of a large festival community. There are now 231 local festivals across Canada which featured over 23,000 performers last year. In British Columbia, there are 32 separate festivals in various communities. Our Victoria Festival provides a platform for progression of our registrants to the Provincial
and National Festivals, and if history is any indication, their achievements on those stages are impressive. Those results provide impetus to our many volunteers and the Board.
This past year has been marked by several major decisions made by our Board. We were fortunate to be able to engage Fuchsia Shier to assist in the office. Fuchsia will be taking over the Office Adminis-trator position when Lynne Picard retires in June this year. We have integrated a new database to better organize the information which is key to our Festival. The number of highlight concerts has been re-duced to 10 by combining several disciplines. As well, the Board is engaged in updating our strategic plan.
This year Festival begins on April 4 and concludes on May 12, 2018. During those weeks adjudicated sessions will take place in disciplines such as dance, speech arts, voice, choral, bands, ethnic dance, composition, and include instruments ranging from piano, guitar, woodwinds, brass, fiddle and strings. Our Highlight Concerts, concluding with the Roberto and Mary Wood Scholarship Concert on May 12th, give audiences a stage to enjoy and applaud the exceptional talent, and provide valued performance opportunity for young artists. I am also excited to tell you that Victoria will be hosting the 2018 Provincial Festival from May 29 to June 2, when over 500 winners from all parts of British Columbia will perform before adjudicators. Three concerts will highlight the exceptional calibre of dance and music from BC. You will not be disappointed! Be sure to check our website for concert dates and times. The Festival owes its success over the years to numerous dedicated persons, some of whom have been active in various capacities for over 40 years, a tribute to their love of the performing arts. There are hundreds of volunteers who make Festival a success each year. Festival relies on our loyal and generous donors who sustain us. They are comprised of individual patron, award donors, sponsors, foundations and granting agencies. They are listed elsewhere in this Program. We are grateful for their support for the arts. We invite you to join us at Highlight Concerts where the talent being presented is celebrated. As President, I wish to thank all those who encourage and support our initiatives. To our performers during Festival 2018, I wish you every success. John Sterk, President

Thank you to all of our volunteers! Festival owes its success and longevity to the ongoing support of over 300 volunteers annually. Our teams of dedicated volunteers undertake essential tasks including governance, fundraising, awards management, publicity, media, grant applications, sponsor management, volunteer management, scheduling performances and staging over 2,000 performances that take place in eleven different venues across Victoria.
We would also like to thank our student participants, their teachers and accompanists. The amazing performances that make up Festival represent countless hours of instruction and practice. Thank you to all of the participants for sharing your talent through Festival.
Thank you!
