Twenty-five years ago at Super Bowl XXV Whitney Houston wowed the world with her performance of the national anthem, The Star-Bangled Banner. On Memorial Day 2016, 10-year-old Lindsey Smits dazzled the Olmsted Communities with her performance of the national anthem at the Memorial Day Ceremony held at The Village Green. Click HERE to watch the video of Lindsey’s performance. Lindsey is no stranger to performing. She has been studying dance since she was three years old and is currently enrolled in ballet, tap, jazz, contemporary, and lyrical classes at Olmsted Performing Arts. Lindsey has studied vocal performance under the direction of Amy Hanratty for the past two years as part of Amy Hanratty's Voice Variations performance group, Encore, which has been featured in various local venues including the IX Center. She has also won a host of accolades, including 1st Place in her Age Division in the 2015 Olmsted Falls K-12 Talent Show, and she was the Talent Show overall Grand Prize Win-ner earlier this year.

The talented performer has just been named a finalist in the 2016

Garrettsville Idol singing competition, part of the annual Garrettsville Summerfest celebra-tion that will take place this June. Lindsey loves musical theater, and she has performed in many local theater productions. Her favorite role was that of "Soloist" in the Great Lakes Theater's "A Christmas Carol" at Play-house Square this past December. Lindsey has also performed in community theater produc-tions of "The Sound of Music" (Brigitta), "Mary Poppins" (Jane), "Seussical" (JoJo), "Les Miserables" (Young Eponine), and "Annie" (Kate), among others. Currently, Lindsey is cast in the musical "Really Rosie" at TrueNorth Cultural Center, Shef-field Village. Last summer Lindsey had the privilege of attending the Broadway Destinations Musical Theater Camp in NYC under the director of Broadway Musical Director Michael Rafter. She was chosen from among her peers to audition for the Broadway productions of Matilda, Fun Home, and School of Rock. While performing is her passion, off stage, Lindsey maintains her status as an honor student. She also studies piano, loves basketball, and holds a Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do.

Lindsey is not the only talented child in the Smits’ household. Her 8 year old brother, Xander, has been studying vocal performance under the of Amy Han-ratty for one year and is enrolled in Tap classes. He may be young but Xander already has multiple roles under his belt, including being cast as Delivery Boy this past December in The Great Lakes Theater's "A Christmas Carol" at Playhouse Square, cast as Winthrop Paroo in "The Music Man" for the Olmsted Falls High School's 2016 Spring Masquers Musical and as a Party Child in the 2014 Olmsted Performing Arts' "Nutcracker" ballet. When not on stage, Xander plays basketball and golf. He also studies the piano.

Xander loves the Boy Scouts, and he has just had the honor of bridging to the Bear pack. He holds a Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do. This fall, Lindsey will be a 5th grader at OFIS and Xander will be 3rd grader at Falls-Lenox.

Instrumental Lessons Private lessons will be offered this year on flute, clarinet, saxophone, cornet, trumpet, trombone, baritone, tuba, percus-sion, voice, and maybe, depending on the amount of interest, French horn, oboe and bassoon. (Availability of lessons will depend on the number of responses for each instrument.) This is an excellent opportunity to help your child enjoy band and choir more by being able to participate at a higher level than before. All students can greatly benefit from lessons. The ad-vanced player will gain a greater depth of understanding and solo performance while the less experienced player will get a

chance to practice the fundamentals they need. Fee is $14.00 for each once a week private lesson. Contact Mr. Feller at 440.427.6333 or [email protected] for more information or to setup lessons for your child.

Private Lessons are a great way to fast forward your child's progress. Lessons are taught one to one, dealing with just your child's skills. Here are some excellent area teachers:
