Yarn Craft: Introduction to Crochet M ike McPhee, grandson of noted local architect Jules Jacques Benedict, will talk and show photos about his famous grandfather on Tuesday, November 3, 7–8 p.m. Benedict was one of the most flamboyant architects of the early 20th century, and he designed four well -known buildings in Littleton: Town Hall Arts Center, the First Presbyterian Church, the former Carnegie Library, and Benedict’s private residence, which is now the Carmelite Monastery. McPhee, who is an author and journalist, will show rare photographs of the Benedict family and buildings that Benedict designed in the Denver area. The Life of Littleton Architect Jules Jacques Benedict S ee stunning images of Alaska presented by award-winning nature photo- graphers, Wendy Shattil and Bob Rozinski, Tuesday, November 10, 7–8 p.m. Among the stars of this wild section of America are humpback whales, bears, eagles and marine life that abound in tide pools. Shattil and Rozinski will take you to southeast Alaska through images and stories gathered while exploring the region on a 12 passenger classic wooden boat built in 1932 as a marine research vessel. Shattil was the first woman awarded Grand Prize in the world's most prestigious wildlife photography contest, England's BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year Competition. She and her partner, Rozinski, have photographed as a team since 1981. They are currently working on their 17th book. A Photographic Journey through Southeast Alaska Musical Moments at Sophie’s Place P erformances feature a variety of musical talent from Littleton and the Denver metro area. The Choralary, a group of eight singers/musicians, will celebrate the founding of Littleton with ballads and songs from the American West on Saturday, November 7, 2–3 p.m. They also will sing some sea chanteys, Celtic melodies and medleys from Appalachia. The group is accompanied by instruments including guitar, cello, mandocello, banjo, bodhrán, djembe and flute. E xperience the dramatic film, San Andreas, on the library’s big screen, Saturday, November 28, 2–4 p.m. After the San Andreas Fault triggers a mag- nitude 9 earthquake in California, a search and rescue helicopter pilot (Dwayne Johnson) and his estranged wife make their way together from Los Angeles to San Francisco to save their only daughter. Murder in the Stacks–A Library Murder Mystery Program

A ctors from the Creative Revolution Theatre Company will perform a hair-raising, nail-biting murder mystery complete with dessert, Friday, November 13, 7–8:30 p.m. A group of famous authors sit

on a panel at Bemis Library to answer questions from their number one fans when an unexpected real-life plot twist puts the authors in the center of a murder investigation. Join us as we listen for clues, nar-row down the suspects, and solve the murder. The Creative Revolution Theatre Company has performed full-length plays, murder mystery dinner theatres and special performances throughout the Denver area.

use by our patrons in 5th grade and younger.

Also, wireless Internet access is available

throughout the building for patrons with

wireless-enabled devices. Currently, our computers use Microsoft

Windows 7 operating systems and Micro-

soft Office 2010 software that includes

Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint and Pub-

lisher. All of our PCs are linked to printers.

Printing costs are $0.10 a page for black

only or $0.50 a page for color. Our com-

puter lab has 10 PCs and may be scheduled

for group use. We are happy to assist pa-

trons individually if you need help using

the computers or the Internet.

We also offer free computer and Internet

classes on a regular basis. To learn about

Holiday Book Sale

H oliday shopping was never easier than buying books at the Friends’ Holiday Book Sale, Saturday, November 21 through noon on Thursday,

December 24. Donated books in pristine condition and all at reason-able prices. You'll find craft, cooking, and children's books, as well as fiction, history, current events, gardening, biography, and more. A

special preview sale for members of the Friends of the Library and Muse-um will take place on Friday evening, November 20 from 5:30–7:30 p.m.

H ear interesting information about our nation’s presidents, presented by historian Wayne Watson, Monday, November 23, 2–3 p.m. We all know that Lincoln

was our tallest president and FDR was elected to four terms, but who kept a pet alligator in the White House? Who was the only president to serve previously as Speaker of the House? Who got stuck in the White House bathtub? Enjoy an entertaining talk on the lives and administrations of lesser known presidents.

Senior Book Club First Monday of each month at 2 p.m. Nov. 2: The Memory Keeper’s Daughter by Kim Edwards In a tale spanning 25 years, a doctor delivers his newborn twins during a snowstorm and, rashly deciding to pro-tect his wife from their baby daughter's affliction with Down Syndrome, turns her over to a nurse, who secretly raises the child. Dec. 7: Skeletons at the Feast by Chris Bohjalian In the waning months of World War II a small group of people begin the longest journey of their lives—an attempt to cross the remnants of the Third Reich to reach the British and American lines. Among the group is a young Prussian aristocrat named Anna, her Scottish lover Callum and a Wehrmacht corporal who is in reality a Jew. The journey will test their bonds of love and friendship.

L ittleton Immigrant Resources Center will host a financial success program with Carlos Colon, a personal finance coach from mpowered, on Thursday, November 5,

Food for Fines

B emis Public Library, in cooperation with Inter-Faith Community Services, will be sponsoring the annual Food for Fines program

from Monday, November 23 through noon on Thursday, December 24. Simply bring in a non-perishable food item and have a late book fine removed from your Bemis library record. This offer does not apply to lost books. Inter-Faith Community Services helps people living in western Arapahoe County and northern Douglas County as well as unincorporated areas of Arapahoe County.

project on Saturday, November 21, 2-4 p.m. We’ll be combining a Raspberry Pi (running a Minecraft program), with a Makey Makey board to create a life-sized, inter-active Minecraft game on the giant movie screen. We’ll have other Makey Makey boards hooked up to laptops, along with

Ongoing Programs

A special Winter Reading Program from November 21–January 9

just for independent readers in grades 1-5. Pick up a reading log in

the library beginning November 21, read chapter books on your own in your

free time during the holidays and record the number of pages that you read.

Children will meet their goals by completing a certain number of pages

based on their grade level. Finishers will receive a free book to keep in

addition to other surprises. Visit us in the Children’s Room to find out more.

Warm Up With a Good Book Winter Reading Program

S top by the Children’s Room on Monday, November 23 anytime

between 1:30 and 3 p.m. for some make and take crafty fun. For

kids in grades 1-5. No reservations needed.

Drop-in Crafts

T hrill to another Pixar adventure shown on the library’s big screen

on Tuesday, November 24, 2 p.m. When 11-year-old Riley

moves to a new city, her Emotions team up to help her through the

transition. Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust and Sadness work together, but

when Joy and Sadness get lost, they must journey through unfamiliar

places to get back home. Snacks will be provided. For ages 3 and up.

Children under the age of 8 must attend with an adult. Rated PG.

Running time: 120 minutes. Reservations are required. Call 303-795-3961
