Music Magazine & Audience Analysis

Q

Age range and gender of audience• The median age of Q readers is 29, and according to Q magazine’s media pack, their audience is ‘YOUNGER and more AFFLUENT than other music monthly.’ The age range is fitting for the music the magazine covers which is primarily about large, mainstream bands and new album releases. Younger audiences will be interested in contemporary music.

• Moreover, there are more males buying the magazine than there are females, are there are 75% male and 25% female readers. This is evinced in some of the representations of people, particularly women, as they are often portrayed and captured to been perceived through the eyes of a male reader; this refers to Laura Mulvey’s Male Gaze Theory.

Genres of music

The typical genres of music they will be most interested in listening to are:Rock (pop/punk/alternative/symphonic/indie)Progressive metalPop/synthpop/R&BSka/reggae fusionsElectronica

Evidently Q readers have a range of musical tastes, many genres interchangeable with one another. Q does tend to guide readers through other styles and forms of music, too, which makes it the ‘world’s biggest and best music guide.’

Examples of favourite bands/artists

• These are just some of the bands and artists that have been covered over different issues of Q that many readers enjoy listening to. Mainstream artists such as Jessie J or even Lily Allen who cater for the younger masses, but also bands such as Green Day, Oasis, Muse and Kasabian, which are fitting for the lifestyles of average Q readers who have a heavy taste for rock-sounding music, especially during the rock’n’roll periods back in the 80s and 90s.

Types of clothes they wear

I believe that these are the types of clothes Q readers will wear. Noticeably, there are several luxury brands, such as D&G, Fred Perry and G Star which I believe affluent Q readers will be able to afford, due to their high disposable incomes. The smart casual look of the combination of the leather jacket, jeans, smart shirt and trainers are what I visualise the average style of Q readers to look like, due to their laid-back perspective of life and their sociable traits which suggest they like to go out regularly with friends. The dark colours are suggestive of the male-dominated readership, too.

Types of jobs they might have

• 68% of Q readers are within the ABC1 bracket of the general registrar scale, and have a high disposable income.• In this case, they will have mostly white collars jobs such as:

oBusiness executives/managersoAccountantsoTeachersoJunior managers

Hobbies/Interests

• Q readers will have an avid interest in discovering new music, and this forms part of their society• They will be passionate music fans, who occasionally attend gigs and concerts and are open-minded experience seekers.• When not out with friends in a club or a pub, they will also be highly savvy to digital technology and a keen social networker, using online services to enhance their social lives.• They are also keen on finding out about up and coming bands before they go mainstream.
