The Project

Why “Murden’s Green”? For eons, Rolling Bay and nearby Manitou Beach were part of the hunting and fishing territory of the Suquamish people. In 1792 Captain George Vancouver mapped the area as part of his explorations; in 1856 it was named Murden Cove by the U.S. Coast Guard Survey team. Locally known as Rowle’s Bay, after a settler and his Indian wife who lived along the shore, Rolling Bay received its present day name with the establishment of the Post Office in 1892. Historically, Rolling Bay’s fortunes were linked to those of Ports Madison and Blakely: both relied upon tim-ber and shipbuilding. The name “Murden’s Green” was chosen for several reasons: it reflects the area’s history, the word “green” has a strong association with sustainability, and a green is a community gathering space where residents can meet, converse, and deepen their social ties. We envision Murden’s Green as a place that will enable residents to connect with the past, deepen their current sense of place, and co-create a sustainable future.

Project Overview Murden’s Green is a mixed-use develop-ment project located in the community of Rolling Bay on Bainbridge Island, Wash-ington. Still in the conceptual stage, the primary design intention of the project is to create a “regenerative” community center that is LEED certified, emphasizes sense of place, exceeds its own energy needs, re-cycles its own waste, supports responsive & responsible economic development, and educates the community—through tradi-tional & non-traditional methods—about the relationship between buildings and community well-being. Fully realized, Murden’s Green will 1.demonstrate the possibilities of regenerative design, and 2. become a sustainable development model for the community.

Project Benefits•Enhanced quality of life & productivity•Reduced energy consumption•Improved indoor environmental quality•Reduced impact on natural systems

Overall project goals: •Attain LEED Certification•Cultivate A Sense of Place•Function as a Demonstration Project•Regenerate at All Levels of Scale•Design Ecological On-Site Waste Treatment
