Well, i Guess tHis is WHat you were all looking for. right?

What artist doesn’t love to look at new babies. if you don’t, i just don’t want to know about it.

so … this is where i’ve been for several months — just holding baby Kai. He is 16 hours old here in this picture, and when i left northern california he was 6 weeks old. i miss seeing him learn something new every day. His supposedly blank canvas is filling very rapidly, and his mom and dad will now be the primary witnesses of that. He is a dynamo.

i wish i could fill a new canvas as rap-idly as he. i am always in awe of this thing we know of as time. as most of you know, i am certainly not a master of it. to me it seems too elastic, and thickens and thins before my very eyes. so long a time stretch until i pick up a brush, and then it races when i feel it is standing still as i paint. so it is to be an artist — as a baby when time stands still, but is racing.

Xanadu Gallery recently began an online discussion about whether or not an artist should date his paintings. it was

a question that i had often pondered, not knowing which was “correct.” i had no idea that the art world was pondering the same question.

What do you think about it?

personally, i love to go to museum retrospectives and enjoy seeing the dates listed on the wall labels. i want to see how the artist changed over time and at what point of career path he was on when a painting was done. but in a commercial gallery, who wants an old painting that was done seven years ago? they want bright new shiny ones. seeing a date is not an asset.

so when all my work is put up on the walls of a museum in the distant future, it may just be a blob of work, not a career path over time without those telltale dates. Maybe it’s just time to change. put a date on it — or not? What do you think?

thanks to Stephen Austin for a pro-gressive year in which we improved our communication with an expanded,

practical and informative website, and for bridging the administrative transi-tion into the 2012-13 year. thanks to Ann Jones, Jila Hakimi, and Vivian Kiyani for supporting the administra-tion and financial house during this transition. thanks to the old timers and new comers for keeping the ship steady and keeping it energized. are you helping us row the boat?

Leti Stiles has jumped in and cut her teeth on one show and is setting up for another in october. i didn’t see your name on the card. it is not too late to join these early birds for that show. Will you be in it? Will we see you at avantGarden or aelaguna this coming month? collectors are buying artwork now. i hope they will buy something of yours!

see you soon,
