Mums do the businessThe number of female entrepreneurs who juggle work and looking after their childrenis growing fast.

By Sarah Morrison, Sunday 29 September 2013

1 Some businesswomen love being described as a "mumpreneur" -- enjoying the fact that they combinerunning a business with looking after their children. Others hate it, and complain that it is patronising andunprofessional. So be careful where you use it.

2 The word has not come from nowhere. The number of self-employed women is rising at nearly three timesthe rate of men. In Britain, there are now more than 1.2 million self-employed women in full- and part-timework. The number of female entrepreneurs increased by 9.6 per cent in 2011-2013, compared with a 3.3per cent rise for men, according to the Office for National Statistics.

3 An estimated 300,000 women are mumpreneurs, according to Mumpreneurs UK, and they contribute 7.4billion to the economy each year. The support network found that almost 90 per cent of mums would liketo start their own enterprise.

4 But is the term condescending? Businessmen with children are rarely referred to as "dadpreneurs" and"entrepreneur" is unisex, so why the need for the extra label?

5 Laura Rigney, managing director of Mumpreneur UK and mother of three boys aged between six and nine, said the term simply recognises the extra challenges a self-employed mother faced. "For these femaleentrepreneurs, their businesses are run and structured around their children. It can be very draining andthe busiest time is often at night once the children have gone to sleep. So we provide a support networkfor those women." We spoke to two mumpreneurs.

6 Vanessa Pinkney (41 years old)

Vanessa is the co-founder of Peach Pink, creators of luxury leather bags. The former retail buyer forArcadia has two children under seven. Her business partner, Helen Peachey, a former buyer for Harrods, has twin daughters. Their bags are now stocked in a number of stores.

"We both knew a buying life wasnt flexible around having kids, so we set up our own businesssupplying handbags. Last year, we started designing and producing our own brand. I embrace the termmumpreneur. The whole point of doing business was setting it up around the children. I can emailfactories in the morning, Skype while the kids are at school, and make sure Im back to pick them up fromschool. If I had a proper nine-to-five job, I would have had to put them in after-school care. I work in mykitchen, my own little empire."

7 Lorraine Smith (30 years old)

Lorraine left her job as an accountant in order to concentrate on her company, GTB Natural, an onlinebusiness offering natural and organic skin and haircare products. She has two children.

"Before, I had to put my daughter in nursery from 8am-6pm every day. I didnt really have a relationshipwith her; I was the woman who saw her at nights and at the weekends and was always telling her off. Now, I work more but I can bring the kids to work if I need to. Theres stuff in the office for them to do. Ican take my kids to school and pick them up. I think being a mumpreneur is really empowering. I can domy own thing and still be a mum. Its about flexible working; sometimes I can be up till 3am working."
