JUNIOR YOUTH THEATRE (JYT) 8-11 YEAR OLDS 40 young actors gave two sell out performances of The Parched Lands by local writer Pia Ashberry and The Witches by Roald Dahl at the Broadway Studio Theatre. Both groups ran to capacity with targeted recruitment through Holbeach, Rushey Green, Athelney and Elfrida Schools. A work placement design student from Wimbledon College of Art worked alongside our designer creating extraordinary wigs and wild monsters for the productions. “BEING AT LYT HAS INSPIRED ME GREATLY. THE DIRECTORS HAVE BEEN EXTREMELY SUPPORTIVE. I HAVE MADE NEW FRIENDS AND HAD MANY JOKES. I HAVE ENJOYED MYSELF INCREDIBLY AND AM GRATEFUL TO THE STAFF THAT HAVE MADE MY EXPERIENCE ENJOYABLE” 9 YR OLD, JYT MEMBER 11-14 YEAR OLDS 40 young actors (100% increase on last year) performed Gizmo by Alan Ayckbourn and The Exam by Andy Hamilton in July in the main house at the Broadway to 300 family and friends. Our targeted recruitment was achieved through partnership with Bonus Pastor, Sedgehill and Crofton Schools. Junior James, a SYT member, was employed as assistant director to Artistic Director Helen Stanley. “AS A LEARNING MENTOR, I HAVE SEEN THAT BEING INVOLVED IN DRAMA & THEATRE HAS ALLOWED OUR CHILDREN TO SHINE AND SHOW THEIR TALENTS. I AM VERY HONOURED TO BE PART OF THAT JOURNEY. THANK YOU.” JACKIE SPOONER LEARNING MENTOR, RUSHEY GREEN SCHOOL, CATFORD SEE THEATRE For the next three years we will be taking part in the Unicorn Theatre funded ticket scheme to introduce a new and diverse audience to theatre. This has enabled us to take 150 members and their families to four shows at the Unicorn this year. We have also taken SYT groups to shows at the Broadway Studio Theatre, the Albany, the Old Vic and The Lyric Hammersmith. ROAR! SATURDAY MORNING CHILDREN’S THEATRE This year we celebrated Roar!’s fifth year with a programme of 20 of the best children’s theatre companies in the country. All performances sold out and were seen by 1600 Lewisham parents and children. Our arts table, running every week before the show, was staffed by three volunteers who also designed the activities. ROAR! OUTREACH Our funded ticket scheme reached 600 under 5s and parents. The storytelling workshops were delivered in 15 early years settings throughout the borough, attended by 400 under 5s and their parents. In June LYT hosted Give Us a Hand by Little Angel Theatre. This formed part of a week of theatre enabling 800 families & schools to see world class puppets at the Broadway studio. “THE CHILDREN LOVED IT. IT WAS ESPECIALLY GREAT TO SEE CHILDREN WHO ARE VERY QUIET ENGAGING AND COMING ALIVE” STAFF AT ST JAMES HATCHAM ANNUAL REPORT 2007/08 LYT has accomplished the aims set since becoming resident at the Broadway. We are now looking ahead and have been building a business plan with our members, Council of Management and partners to take us to 2012. SENIOR YOUTH THEATRE (SYT) 14-21 YEAR OLDS MULTI MEDIA PROJECT In January 08 LYT were awarded the prestigious Clore Duffield Performing Arts Award for a collaboration with Lightwork - a professional multimedia theatre company which fuses live performance and digital technologies. A small group of experienced performers have been working alongside industry professionals. The project started in March with a scratch performance at the Broadway and will culminate in a performance at The Albany, Deptford, in August 08. TECHNICAL THEATRE This year’s technical students were involved in all our performances running both lights and sound and taking stage management roles on all four JYT shows. WORKSHOPS AND WORK SHARE In January, 20 SYT members took part in workshops leading to a work share in March. The group took an active role in the selection of the piece they hope to perform next year. COMEDY GROUP Six experienced SYT members (all over 18) created their own comedy show. The group devised and rehearsed a 20 minute set and performed at Voluntary Action Lewisham’s AGM in the presence of the Mayor of Lewisham and at PAYP Celebrates in the Broadway Theatre main house. COUNCIL OF MANAGEMENTOur board have been extremely active this year & have worked with LYT’sArtistic Directors on strategy days, planning & blue sky ideas sessions. All this is feeding into our business plan. Maylene Catchpole & StephanieJacob resigned after many years of service. We are pleased to welcomeDanielle Moseley, a SYT member. Her knowledge of LYT will be invaluableas we plan our future. The Artistic Directors are extremely grateful to ourCouncil of Management for contributing their time, commitment &valuable expertise throughout the year: Elizabeth Downie (Secretary)Danielle Moseley, Sarah Ricca, Dawn Rowe, Andrew Siddall (Chair), ChrisStalker, Vanessa White (Treasurer).

ORGANISATIONAL DEVELOPMENTCOLLABORATION AND PARTNERSHIP HAVE BEEN KEY IN OUR WORK THIS YEAR, LEADING TO:• A successful link with Wimbledon College of Art.• A collaboration with Lightwork - multi media theatre company. • Partnerships with four local primary and three secondary schools.• Work experience for two LYT members. • 15 volunteers working on LYT projects - an increase of 100%.

TRAINING:• Three of our tutor team are ex Youth Theatre members who have received

training and mentoring and are great role models to our participants. • Tutors took part in sessions run by Stomp Physical Theatre. • The Artistic Directors attended Participation Workshops and Business

Planning sessions run by London Business School.

NEXT YEAR WE AIM TO:• Increase the number of student placements. • Explore partnerships with other local and national arts organisations.• Increase our work with schools and early years settings. • Build on the current involvement of members in participating in the runningand planning of projects.
