The torpedo features unique system characteristics which result in outstanding performances for any-task and any-environment applications including the very shallow waters of the littoral. Designed and built with the most advanced technology, it is conceived to respond to the ASW operational needs of the 21 st century. More than 1000 rounds have been presently produced; it is already in service with a number of major NATO Navies. Its impressive intrinsic and embedded acoustic & dynamic capabilities allow the employment of the weapon in diversified roles as anti-torpedo torpedo (MU90HK) missions. The Launching platforms The MU90 torpedo can be deployed from any type of surface and air platform including missiles. It can also be encapsulated into continental shelf mines as well as launched by submarines. Its unmatched deployment altitudes and extremely long stand-off launching capabilities allow the ASW forces to cope with the threat posed by the modern submarine-launched anti-air-missiles (SLAAM). General description The MU90 / IMPACT torpedo is 323,7mm ‘NATO Standard’ calibre, weights 304 Kg and is 2850 mm long. The weapon is powered through a hazard-free, pollution-free Aluminium-Silver Oxide (AgO-Al) sea water battery of 120KW (*) using dissolved sodium-dioxide powder as electrolyte which grants minor maintenance infrastructure requirements and no disposal costs. It incorporates an advanced closed-loop electrolyte re- circulation system. It is propelled through an electronically controlled high-RPM brush-less motor driving a skewed multi- blades pump-jet propulsor allowing a linearly variable torpedo speed automatically selected by the tactics of the weapon according to the scenario, the environment and the operational phase. The extremely low radiated noise achieved through the use of the cavitations-free pump-jet technology combined to an extended selection of torpedo preset parameters allow the weapon a silent approach to the target minimising the alert distance of even sophisticated submarines’ detection systems and thereof maximizing the overall killing probability. Of extremely long endurance, the weapon operates without any speed and endurance degradation in water depths well in excess of 1000 m and as shallow as 25 m while retaining navigation capability up to 3m without any limitation of salinity and temperature. Main Dynamic Features Min speed : 29Kts Max speed: >> 50Kts(*) Speed change step: 1Kts Min to Max speed time: < 3” Range: > 12,000 m at max speed > 25,000m at min speed Min launch depth: < 25 m (*) actual figure is classified

MU90/ IMPACT ALWT

Introduction The MU90 is a NATO-interoperable, Multi-Role, fire-and-forget LWT designed to counter any type of nuclear or conventional submarine even acoustically coated, deep-diving, fast-evasive and deploying anti-torpedo effectors. The torpedo features unique system characteristics which result in outstanding performances for any-task and any-environment applications including the very shallow waters of the littoral. Designed and built with the most advanced technology, it is conceived to respond to the ASW operational needs of the 21st century.

The advanced acoustic seeker features multi pre-formed transmission & reception beams. Its multi-frequency, parallel processing and simultaneous acoustic modes operation, allow multi-target tracking capability, high engagement distance, high performance in very shallow water providing the weapon with high immunity to the most advanced anti-torpedo countermeasures. The control and guidance electronic, of incomparable computation power and digital memories, accommodates the operational and tactical software including the signal processing, the data processing and the torpedo guidance laws allowing the weapon to continuously self-adapt its configuration and tactics according to the evolution of the operational situation and of the threat.

The inertial system exploited for the torpedo control and guidance is based on ‘strap-down’ technology providing the weapon with an excellent manoeuvrability, all-attitudes capability including bottom following capability and high accuracy for the final impact on the target. The torpedo homing system matched with the high energy propulsion system, grants target engagement ranges in excess of 15,000 m.

The Warhead Direct energy charge warhead proven to kill double hull submarines and ignited through an impact type exploder incorporating 2 mechanical and 6 electrical independent safety devices. The V350 explosive fully meets the STANAG safety requirements (Insensitive Munition).

The Exercise version The exercise section, interchangeable with the warhead section, allows live exercise evaluation, warstock surveillance & training firings. The recovery system is based on a hazard-free, compressed-air pneumatic inflatable collar; it features high recovery reliability & easy localisation. It incorporates redundant safeties and localisation devices, embedded underwater tracking means as well as a solid state memory data acquisition system, providing computer-based post-firing evaluation analysis capability. The length, weight and CoG of the exercise round are strictly the same of the warshot weapon thus granting fully realistic exercise live firings. The sea-water propulsion battery can be replaced with a multi-firings, Li-ion rechargeable battery to minimize the LCC of the weapon.

ILS A comprehensive ILS is provided to the customer to grant and easy preventive and corrective maintenance throughout the system shelf life. The modern approach to the MU90 ILS renders the 30-years Life Cycle Cost of the weapon significantly low with respect to all the existing torpedo systems and minimises the need of significant infrastructures and human resources.
