Danuta- MSc Semiconductor Photonics and ElectronicsThe theoretical knowledge in lectures is well balanced with the labwork associated with fabrication of semiconductor devices thusproviding an all-round understanding of the subject. The physicalfabrication of semiconductor devices in the III-V National Centrewas unknown to me but is definitely exciting. Sheffield is interesting; From the Peak District to the parks to the restaurants which cater toall tastes, the city has something for everyone.

MSc Electronic and Electrical Engineering

Electronic Engineering has been a catalyst to the progress in science and engineering formany years. Electronic devices have been used in every aspect of science and engineeringranging from space exploration, atomic nucleus analysis, DNA profiling to domesticappliances such as television, microwave oven and radio, to name just a few. Industrial andcommercial enterprises such as financial institutions, manufacturing plants, the railwaynetwork and the national power supply grid use computers to monitor and control thestate of their systems.

Our MSc in Electronic Engineering provides a clear understanding of fundamentalprinciples and of the working concept of electronic building blocks; their functionality, their performance, their limitation and so forth. The wide range of modules in theprogramme are delivered by expert academic staff who are active at the forefront ofresearch in many aspects of electronic engineering, spanning a spectrum of researchactivities ranging from development of high performance nanostructure electronicdevices, design of high performance motors and drive electronics, development of next-generation communication and radar systems, the design and systems incorporation ofnovel integrated circuits.

This programme is designed to provide graduates from a wide range of disciplines with athorough understanding of electronic devices and circuits. It offers the essentialknowledge in electronics for chemical, mechanical, aerospace and civil engineers as well ascomputer scientists and physicists to move into related areas of work, and as a means ofupdating knowledge for those already in the field. Most graduates gain employment in thecommercial/industrial sector but a significant minority embark on further studies leadingto a PhD, either at Sheffield or elsewhere.

Students will be given the option to select specialised modules from themes encompassing(i) Power Electronics and Machine Design, (ii) Communications and Devices, (iii)Computing and Communication Network and (iv) Advanced Circuit Design.

MSc Data Communications

The MSc in Data Communications, offered jointly by the Departments of Electronic and Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, is a course designed to provide students with a detailed knowledge and understanding of this rapidly developing field. The efficient transfer of information around the globe is one of the most dynamic business sectors. It encompasses a huge variety of technologies, including:

Improved devices and integrated circuitry operatingat ever higher frequenciesEfficient data compressionStringent error correctionDetailed protocol specificationOptimal network design

This diversity means that a course in this area can nolonger be adequately presented by the expertise availablein one discipline, but needs the combined resources ofboth Computer Science and Electronic Engineering.

The primary aim of the course is to ensure its relevanceto the industries operating in this field. All students willparticipate in an individual MSc project which may havea link with industry. Furthermore the strong linksbetween individual lecturers and companies operating intheir fields of expertise means that all courses arecontinually up-dated with the most recent developmentsin each area. Students embarking on this course canexpect a challenging year, learning in-depth about theoperating principles and requirements of state-of-the-artand next-generation data communication systemsthrough immersion in the technology that makes thempossible.

The combination of research-led teaching and industrialrelevance will ensure that graduates with an MSc in DataCommunications from the University of Sheffield will beexcellently placed for a fulfilling career based on theknowledge learned and skills developed during theirdegree.

MSc Wireless Communication Systems

The objective of MSc (Eng) in Wireless Communication Systems programme is toprovide engineers with a thorough understanding of both the theory and the most up todate practices of the rapidly developing field of wireless communication systems. Theproposed programme is unique because it encompasses all of the key design aspects of amodern wireless communication system, in particular cellular mobile systems. Startingfrom the fundamentals of digital communications theory, baseband digital signalprocessing, coding and modulation, antenna design, RF propagation and radiotechniques for wireless systems the programme then treats key systems integrationsaspects including wireless packet data networking and protocols, broadband wirelesstechniques, and cellular mobile principles and systems. This fulfils industry’s pressingneed for communications engineers that have a comprehensive wireless systemsappreciation. The programme will be delivered with a bias towards research anddevelopment and we expect most graduates from this programme either to gainemployment in the R & D industrial sector or to embark on further studies leading to aPhD, either at Sheffield or elsewhere.
