MSA MONTHLY ISSUE 4 WINTER 2014

“Serving your fellow students as an elected representative with the MSA is a humbling experience. You will be amazed by how passionate students are about their academics, extracurriculars, and future careers. To be able to help them achieve success in any of these areas is incredibly rewarding.”

-Cody MacKay

“Being a part of the MSA has helped me to learn humility, empathy, delegation, and communication. For me the best part has been getting the opportunity to work closely with a team of people with similar goals and values, and also to take risks and experiment being in a management role with real hands-on experience.”

-Jenn Tarpey

WHAT MAKES A GOOD CANDIDATE? “A good candidate needs to have “self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills. Outside of those, I would say [they need to be able] to engage others in shared meaning… they [need to] have a distinctive [and] compelling voice, integrity, and adaptive capacity. These are things we all are striving to work on each day throughout our term as executives”.

-Michael Flaherty-Specht, President

“I think the major quality that makes someone a good fit for an MSA leadership position is passion. Being an executive involves a large time commitment and I think it would be easy for all of the work to become overwhelming if you didn’t love what you were doing. The second quality I find significant to MSA leadership roles is teamwork. The majority of the

tasks that are completed within each executive portfolio are indirectly and directly connected to both other executive and director roles. Everybody needs to be able to work as a cohesive group in order to accomplish goals.“

-Jenna Stasuk, Vice President of Student Resources

“The candidates who will find they fit best within the MSA are those who consistently prioritize students above all else. As an elected representative, your major stakeholders are the 800+ Management students. Whenever you make a decision or evaluation of an idea, the first thing that comes to mind should ALWAYS be ‘how does this affect students’? On top of this fundamental understanding, the ideal candidate for any MSA leadership position would have a few key qualities. The first is self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. To be an effective member of the MSA team, it's not only critical for you to be able to recognize where you can excel, but to keep in mind your blind spots and pitfalls. Without this realization, a leader will never be able to improve their capabilities effectively over time. MSA leadership roles require individuals who are passionate and driven, willing to challenge the status quo and take calculated risks. Above all else, I believe that the true leaders among us are humble and modest, reserved in their approach but passionate and dedicated nonetheless.”

-Cody MacKay, Vice President of Marketing

“It is important for candidates to be “passionate about helping other students! It's a big time commitment so they [need to be able to] prioritize and manage their time, [as well as have] a good work ethic.”

-Kirsty Rancier, Vice \ President of Corporate Relations

“A good candidate for any of the MSA Executive positions is someone who is primarily fuelled by passion. Passion is most important, because in these positions it’s all you have to justify putting in extra time for no physical reward. Instead, executives receive a huge amount of intrinsic value, meaning they can personally impact students lives and provide valuable learning experiences all while developing and expanding their own skill set and knowledge. The main point I can speak to with elections on the horizon is the importance of your team dynamic. Nothing in the MSA is a one-man show; everything is done with the strength of your team behind you. With that being said, the amount and quality an executive team can produce is directly correlated with a team’s dynamic and work ability amongst themselves. Internal conflict is a sure way to crush an executive teams potential.” -Robin Wenger, Vice President of Events

MSA MONTHLY ISSUE 4 WINTER 2014

“I think that a good fit for MSA Executive positions are people who want to take the organization to the next level, while keeping in mind the best interests of our key stakeholders - the students. Communication on all levels is key and always strive to generate better experiences! It is also important to understand the time commitment of the role for which you would like to run and be sure that it is something you truly want to take on. It is an amazing experience but there is a lot of hard work involved. Elections can be stressful! My advice is to keep positive

and make sure to communicate your intentions. If you are not on a slate, do not be discouraged from running! Your efforts will

not go unnoticed by your peers and the faculty and you'll never know what could happen if you don't try. Also, don't miss out on any of the mandatory info sessions and important dates.”

-Jenn Tarpey, Vice President of Academics “Leadership: The best way to demonstrate leadership is by example. As such a successful candidate/leader must possess integrity and passion. The former is defined as remaining accountable and transparent to all students, while the latter is based upon the desire to improve the opportunities available to students (regardless of position).”

-David Benn, Vice President of Finance

HOW OFTEN DO YOU ACTUALLY KEEP YOUR

It’s easy to keep up with your goals and maintain motivation throughout January, but as the year goes on, we often lose sight of the resolution. Do you want to make this year different? Here are some strategies to help you keep your resolution this year:

1. CHOOSE AN OBTAINABLE GOAL: Avoid choosing a resolution that has been unsuccessful many times in the past; choosing something that you will likely not achieve is only setting yourself up for failure, frustration, and disappointment. If you are still eager to complete a goal that has failed before, then try altering it to be more reasonable.

2. CREATE AN ANNUAL PLAN

At the beginning of January, write yourself a comprehensive plan for the year. All successful businesses start with a business plan that describes their mission and specifics on how they will achieve it. This will keep you set to your schedule of achievements, which will make you more likely to succeed!

3. BREAK YOUR BIG GOAL INTO SMALLER GOALS

Rather than just having one big year end goal, dissect it into smaller pieces. Set several small goals to achieve throughout the year that will help you achieve your ultimate goal. Even if you aren’t able to reach your final goal, you will still be able to say that you reached significant goals along the way.

4. DON’T DO IT ALONE!

Ask friends and family members to help you so you have someone to make you accountable. Be sure to set limits so this accountability is helpful without irritation.
