I wish to remind players that their subs are now due and must be paid within the fortnight. Show your commitment to your club by paying your subs. Socks and shorts are now in stock and you be rewarded for paying your subs with a new pair of each and this way you will have the same gear on at game day.. The easiest way to pay is to jump on line and do it your own time. The raffle tickets are selling well and remember to get the sold ones back to the club so that the purchasers can be in the draw for the home game prizes. The clubs banker the Bendigo Bank has come on board as a sponsor for the season. Thanks to John Zarb for facilitating this and we thank the Bendigo Bank as well. The next Presidents lunch is against Harlequins at home July 10 when we play for the Bott/Bolton cup. Guest speakers will announced shortly. These lunches are open to all members of the club, but seats are in high demand and bookings must be made as soon as possible after flyer is issued. So watch the web site and news letter frequently for details. Well this Saturday will be a terrific day for the Club, so I will see you at home to watch some great rugby. Cheers,

John Rosenhain MRUFC President

number of teams fielded each weekend. These new players must be congratulated on the contribution they have made to the club so far and the hard work they are undergoing to ensure the season continues to be a positive one. Of course, none of our success would be possible without the amazing team of coaches the club has managed to assemble through the off-season. With each grade now having multiple coaches and dedicated managers we are undoubtedly seeing the results of the club’s commitment to coaching and organisation. Thanks also must go out to all of the supporters who have come down to our games to cheer on the Unicorns. I know a lot of the new players have commented on the quality of support we receive. This week presents another exciting prospect both on and off the pitch with challenging games in all grades accompanied by one of the highlights of the social calendar in Greek night. Led by Yakka and Aussie George, Greek night promises to be a night full of Souvas, Ouzo and lots of good times and is a great opportunity spend time together as a club one last time before we all get a well deserved break over the long weekend. In Club Captain related news, I am conducting a mini review of the start of the season. I would encourage anyone who has feedback, positive or otherwise, to contact their relevant grade captain. I will be having a meeting with the captains of all the grades before a committee meeting next week where I will be representing the players’ voice. We are on the march towards becoming the best club in Victoria so help me help you! Cheers, Tim Lindsay Club Captain

Under 14: Melbourne 50 Maroondah 5 With the revised draw in place, the Under 14s ventured to North Croydon to play Maroondah (instead of the much anticipated game against Powerhouse, who were hoisted to the A grade during the week). With two reserves available for this week’s match, including new recruit Alex Maycock, the boys played their most dominant 25 minutes of rugby this season in the first half, running in 6 great tries, with 3 conversions (half-time score was 36 to 5 in our favour). All players featured in well-controlled team rugby at the breakdowns and in open play, with Andreas marshalling the backs into effective attacking plays. The forward pack continually provided good ball to the backs from stoppages and from scrums, overpowering their opposite pack on many occasions and consistently driving them back over their own advantage line. The dominance of the forward pack was evident in tries to Paddy ‘The Weaver’ Kavanagh (2 tries), Jamie Shutt, Felix Dunphy (a typical bullocking “Dunphy run”), and Matt Dudgeon, with Rob Renzella also crossing for a good backs’ try. Jamie’s try in particular was a great effort, sprinting 65 metres after busting through 3 or 4 initial tackles, then getting out into the open, and finally pinning the ears back for the try line. The second half did not have quite the same intensity, quite possibly due to too many half-time snakes. Nonetheless Andrew Jack, James Wicker and Rob Renzella all crossed for tries, with Will Bracegirdle converting two of these to add to his two conversions in the first half. Leaving the best to last, the big highlight of the match was Ilan ‘The Skewer’ Arenstein’s ferociously-legal tackling, especially one memorable front-on cruncher that made spectators’ avert their eyes until the all clear signal was given. Together with a few Jonah Lomu-like runs, Ilan’s performance was first class throughout and his best for season. He brings new skills and increased confidence to each new match.

Under 12: Melbourne 44 Boroondara 19 Tries: Dylan Faamausili 5

Fourths: Melbourne 19 University 5

Masters: Melbourne 32 Harlequins 7 Two outstanding moments from this weeks game need to be brought to the attention of a wider audience. The first is what is now generally considered to be the best try ever scored by any Melbourne team in any grade ever. Those who were privileged to bear witness will never forget where they were when they saw it. Ask anyone how good it was. We'll tell you as many times as you like. The second golden moment was Elvis's attempt at a chip over a winger which resulted in general hilarity when he took an air swing and fell over. Seriously, it just doesn't get any better than that.

Under 10 Green: This week the boys enjoyed a very entertaining and hard fought win over Harlequins. Defence was a stand-out this week, with attacker after attacker being pulled down in a strong display of tackling ability. While everyone contributed, special mentions go to Angus, Will and the two Max's. Again, a number of the tries the boys scored were well constructed and involved a number of consecutive phases, building pressure and running straight. Angus and Jensen both made it over the line, only to have tries disallowed for not grounding the ball properly, and Shevon was very unlucky to be called back for putting a foot into touch when he made a break down the line. Ethan continues to probe and look for opportunities wherever they arise and is served well by Oscar who delivers the ball quickly. Rich, Ben and Owen all had exciting and adventurous runs with the ball and are keeping the ball alive well in contact. The forward pack of Chris, Max (1 and 2) Shevon, Will and Jensen had a good game, with some strong running, re-cycling well, and some great work in the mauls. Rucks need to be more dynamic and we'll be working on that along with our body height over the coming weeks. Well done again boys - you are improving every week and obviously enjoying it, which is what matters most.

Under 10 Blues: Melbourne 10 Vs Box Hill 55Blue's Tries: Callum J (2) The boys headed to Boorondara on Saturday for a big challenge against a much bigger Box Hill team. The opposition was more muscled than our first grade and almost as big. After a long warm up we headed into the fray and despite pleas of don’t kick it to the biggest kid, we did just that and it was 5 – 0 pretty quickly. changed kicker and managed to avoid the really big kid but got his sumo buddy who ran over about 5 of our players on the way to another try. Next kickoff we found a small Box Hill player (maybe he was on the sideline watching his Dad play us) but none the less our boys took the opportunity and pounced on him. Finally we had a chance to get our hands on the ball (kickoffs don’t count) and we started to display the skills that have been progressing over the past weeks. Some good running and passing in the backs from James F, Lachie and Bud saw Callum J scorch through for a nice try and he added another one a short time later. Hayden put in a couple of good tackles and along with Nick is becoming more confident each week. Ned, Max and Callum D were in the thick off it as usual and Josh was again taking no prisoners in attack and defense. James NB and Rupert worked hard to get the ball for the backs to run onto and Tom made some great yards in attack. Again, it is a steep learning curve for the boys in their first year of tackle but they are really having fun and progressing and that is what it is all about. Thanks to the players from the greens that came and gave us a hand. It was much appreciated. The two Callums took out the awards this week with some great efforts in attack and defense. Go Unicorns!

Tax return time is upon us again and what better get a tax deduction than to donate to the Romanis Reserve and Orrong Park Development Fund via the Australian Sports Foundation. We are considering installing an electronic score board, won't that piss the visiting clubs off.
