Assessment of Property By D. C. Held Arbitrary The “arbitrary way ip which the
! District government assesses per- ■ sonal property” was criticized last
‘night by the American University Park Citizens’ Association. “You can’t tell what’s in a hous£
by looking at the outside," one mem- ber said. It was pointed out that no consideration is made for de-
preciation and that furniture bought during the depression is assessed at its present value, which may be five or ten times the original price. In other action, the group made
plans for canvassing the area for its campaign to eradicate the Jap- anese beetle. The meeting was conducted by
Robert A. Maurer, jr„ president, in Hurst Hall, American University.

Mrs. May Wallace, 80, Mother of Candidate
For President, Dies By Associated Brass
DES MOINES. April 13.—Mr*.
Mb? Wallace. 80, mother of Henry I A. Wallace, third party presidential candidate and former Vice President, died yesterday at her home here. At her bedside were four of her
six children—Henry. James, of Des Moines; Mrs. Annabelle J. McLay. Birmingham, Mich., and Mrs. Mary O. Bruggmann, wife of the Swiss

services were being arranged today. Mrs. Wallace, widow of Henry C.
Wallace, Secretary of Agriculture under Presidents Harding and
Coolldge, lived on the outskirts of
the Nation’s political life for 30
years, but took little interest in
politics herself. Her husband was Secretary of
Agriculture from 1921 until his death in 1924. Her son Henry served under Franklin D. Roosevelt as
Secretary of Agriculture and Com- merce and as Vice President. Members of the family denied that
Mrs. Wallace strongly disapproved Henry A. Wallace's third party movement. “That is not true," her son James
said. “She was not deeply inter- ested in politics, but was loyal per- sonally to any one in her family in politics.”
