October 2008
Dear Parents, Students, Teachers and Friends: The Gifted Child. No individual can be more exhilarating and, at times, more frustrating. It is often presumed that the gifted child does not need any special type of emotional support. That ability automatically leads to high achievement and talent will overcome all obstacles. In fact, just the opposite is true. The challenges the gifted must face in order to achieve their advanced potential and maintain their health are many. Gifted children, with their intensity and heightened sensitivity, need ongoing support and understanding. One of the greatest gifts we can give gifted children is a positive self concept! Gifted Services has a library of materials to help you as a parent. Please contact Judy Withrow (information below) for a list of the parent materials.
Also, SENG (Supporting Emotional Needs of the Gifted) is a national organization that focuses on the unique social and emotional needs of gifted individuals. SENG underwrites and provides education, research, theory building, and staff development. For further information visit their website at www.sengifted.org.
As the Findlay Enrichment Programs begin a new school year, I want to take this opportunity to encourage supporters of FEP to consider helping with your time and/or financial donation. If you are interested in either, please contact Gifted Services at (419) 427-8296 or Sue Harrington-Williams at (419) 306-4063. Email addresses are either [email protected] or [email protected]. Sincerely, Sue Harrington-Williams FEP President

The FIND Classroom . . .
Packages of Energy By Patty Majors
Can you package up energy and send it to a friend? The 3
rd grade FIND students did just this with a piece
of cardboard, two rubber bands and a paper clip! They transported potential energy in the wound rubber band. When they arrived home they let the rubber bands unwind and the paper clip twirl. Everyone saw kinetic energy in motion! This was just our first step in exploring background information. We are on a journey to answer the following question: In the year 2020, many third graders will have recently graduated from college. The world will have different super-power countries and allies. Access to fossil fuels, our major energy source for electricity and transportation, will have changed. From where will we be getting our power (energy)?
Grades 4 and 5 by Lisa Schadel
Moving the FIND classroom from the old Washington building to Central Middle School was a gigantic task! A HUGE ―thank you‖ goes out to: the parents and students who assisted with packing things in the old room and painting in the new room; the custodians who transported 3 ½ truckloads of furniture and boxes down the steps at Washington and up the steps at Central; the staff members of the Gifted Department, particularly Judy Withrow, who not only organized teams of people to help but also spent many hours of her own time sorting through things as boxes were unpacked and helping with room arrangement at the new building. In addition, my gratitude goes out to the following Central staff members who made this transition as smooth as possible: Mr. Chris Renn, Principal; Mrs. Tami Wallace, Assistant Principal; Mrs. Fox, School Nurse; the secretaries, the custodians, the librarian, the technology specialist, and many others. When we were told that there was not enough room at the new Washington building for our FIND classroom and it was clear that other elementary buildings were
bursting at the seams as they tried to accommodate all-day kindergarten, I joked that I’d probably be teaching out of a circus tent behind one of the schools. I have to admit for a moment I was intrigued until I thought about the impact of the weather. Fortunately, a home was found for our classroom at Central Middle School. There was an initial feeling of hesitation and worry about placing 4
th and 5
th grade FIND students at a middle
school, but I worked very hard to anticipate and trouble-shoot potential difficulties that might arise. After a month of serving FIND students at Central, I am pleased to say that all is going well! It is clear that the students feel honored to be at a school for older children, they love the many choices offered by the school cafeteria, and they are proud to have their own lockers with combinations. In addition to that excitement, the students are learning about immigration, Ellis Island, and Economics. After a brief introduction to immigration, we began talking about the ―cottage industries‖ that popped up when the early immigrants learned that the roads in the United States were not really ―paved with gold.‖ Using that historical backdrop, the students are now in the process of beginning their own businesses. They have formed groups and are eagerly making decisions about the products they will create and actually sell. Soon we will talk about marketing, packaging, and advertising so that they can attract customers when they have the real-life opportunity to sell their products at the FIND Holiday Fair, Saturday, November 8, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. This event will be held at Wilson Vance School, and products from our student-created businesses will be available as well as those from a variety of in-home businesses such as Avon, Pampered Chef and Tupperware. Proceeds will assist students with the cost of an optional end-of-year field trip to New York City and Ellis Island. Watch for future fundraising opportunities for our trip.
Fourth and fifth grade students are HAPPY in their new
classroom at Central Middle School!
SCIENCE CLUBS Wilson Vance students identified gifted in science and
those students showing an affinity for science will meet every other Wednesday beginning October 8
th from 3:30-
4:30 with Wilson Vance teacher, Don Schmidt. The

Wilson Vance Science Club will explore hands-on science.
Chamberlin Hill students will once again have the opportunity to participate in their Science Club led by 5
th
grade teachers Deb Wickerham and Laura Finney.
CHINESE CLASSES BEGIN
Wilson Vance School is the ―home‖ of three Chinese
classes this year. Lin Adams, the teacher, whose first language is
Chinese, is a certified teacher of English as a second language. Classes began September 9 for a Chinese I class of second and third graders and September 10 for a Chinese I class of fourth and fifth graders. On Thursday, September 12, Chinese II students began meeting. Students meet from 4:00-5:30 either Monday, Tuesday or Thursday one day each week for the school year. Working through a textbook, workbook, and using cards to remember vocabulary, students are moving forward in learning Chinese. At home, students amaze parents and siblings with their foreign language skills. Way to go!
REACH NEWS . . .
By Kim Miller, Glenwood
Sixth Grade REACH students from Central, Donnell
and Glenwood visited Findlay American Prosthetic
Orthotic Centre. Before visiting, they read about
disabilities in Freak the Mighty by Rodman Philbrick and
The Acorn People by Ron Jones. Students are writing
research papers on physical and learning disabilities.
Our visit to FAPOC <http://www.fapoc.com> offered
many insights about disabilities. Students appreciated
the time Mr. Ken Berman and Mr. Jeremy Berman spent
giving a tour of the facility and providing information
about prosthetics and orthotics. Following are some
comments shared by the students:
―It was interesting that people go through so much.
We forget or don’t realize how lucky we are to have
bodies without disabilities.‖ Sydney Hamilton
―You don’t have to be born with disabilities.
Sometimes accidents can change the way you use your
body.‖ Michael Jones
―I felt sympathy for some of the people when I saw the
photos of how disabilities affect their everyday lives. We
take so much for granted.‖ Marcus Lawson
―You have to be a people person to work in a
profession like prosthetics and orthotics. You also have
to be patient. Not only those working in the profession,
but also those who have a disability.‖ Ashley Wells
―They make the artificial limbs look so real that you
can’t even tell. That has to make the patient feel a lot
less self-conscious.‖ Noah Stinchcomb
―You could see the joy and happiness in the people
who received a brace or limb.‖ Brandon Keach

Glorious & Triumphant Moments…
FIND Student Makes Difference in Community
―Stop Animal Cruelty!‖ This was the FIND topic
chosen by Alexis Rothenbuhler, third grade student at Lincoln School last school year. Alexis was a student in Lisa Schadel’s FIND class which is an enrichment program. Alexis chose this thought-provoking topic as her independent study project. She spent much time on her project, illustrating her love and concern for animals. As part of her project, Alexis took the time to interview Humane Society’s Dog Warden, Dana Berger, about his experiences dealing with animal cruelty. At the time of the interview a video was made. Alexis also made a large poster with pictures and stories about animal cruelty. A banquet was held and Alexis collected contributions in a can which she had decorated. She then presented this can with the donations, totaling $52.09, to Dana Berger at the Humane Society. Alexis came up with another idea to collect money–a dog bone toss. Alexis gave every student 25 cents who was able to toss a dog bone into her own dog’s bowl. The money was put into her donation can.
At the time, Alexis’s poster was displayed at the Humane Society. All of Alexis’s ideas and thoughts stirred much reaction by the staff and the people who visited the Society. Thank you, Alexis, for your dedication to the welfare of animals and for helping the Humane Society with a generous donation. Keep up the good work!
Congratulations to Glenwood REACH students Anna
Schumm and Austin Clark who placed in the Optimist
Club essay contest last May. Cole Lautermilch won first place. Cole attends Findlay High School. Congratulations to the following students who have been named Commended Students in the 2009 National
Merit Scholarship Program: Spencer Bruce, Daniel
Case, Ryan Essinger, Angela Martaus, Stephanie
May, Catherine McCaffrey, Nandini Sharma, and
Elizabeth Strigle. About 34,000 Commended students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2009 competition for National Merit Scholarships, Commended Students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2009 competition by taking the 2007 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).
National Merit Finalist:
Congratulations to Jason Polder who has
been selected to be one of 16,000 Semifinalists to earn the highly coveted National Merit Scholarship. To become one of 8,200 Finalists, Jason will have to have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be a leader in school and community service, be endorsed and recommended by the high school principal, earn SAT scores that confirm the student’s earlier performance on the qualifying test, write a self-descriptive essay and submit a detailed application. Merit Scholar designees are selected on the basis of their skills, accomplishments, and potential for success in rigorous college studies, without regard to gender, race, ethnic origin, or religious preference.
