Essential Question
LEQ: What is the purpose of exponential notation
LEQ: LEQ: How do I show the factor form of a number expressed in exponential notation?
Exponential Form
Numbers can be written different ways. These are the different ways that we can write numbers.
Word Form- One Hundred million Standard form (number form) -100,000,000 Expanded Form of 12,356(1 x 10,000) + (2 x 1,000) + (3 x
100) + ( 5 x 10) + (6 x 1) 4
Exponential form – 10 Factor Form- 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 = Scientific Form 6.4 x 109 =
6,400,000,000
Prime vs. Composite #’s
Prime Number: A number that has exactly two factors.
Composite Number: A number that has more than one factor.
Note: 1 is a number that is neither prime nor composite.
Greatest Common Factor
Factors are numbers that multiply to make a number. Example:
Factors of 10 : 1, 2, 5, 10 Factors of 15: 1, 3, 5, 15
The Greatest Common Factor or GCF is the largest factor that 2 or more numbers have in common. In this example, 5 is the greatest common factor.
Least Common Multiple
Multiples are the product of two numbers, Multiples for a specific number are infinite.
For example: The first five multiples of 5 are: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25.The first five multiples of 4 are: 4, 8, 12, 16, 20.The Least Common Multiple or LCM is the
smallest multiple that two or more numbers have in common. In this example, 20 is the LCM.
