We are delighted to be the foundation Patrons of MRROS.Having had a hands on experience with visual art on our labels and performing art at the concerts at Leeuwin Estate in Margaret River for some 40 years we have experienced at first hand the very positive effect artists’ creativity can have on a business.MRROS is an enormous innovative initiative to stimulate the Arts community in the Cape-to-Cape region of South West Western Australia. With dozens of artists participating, this inaugural event will display in numerous locations throughout the region showing the works of local artists, their working environment and the artists themselves. We wish all involved every success and you the public a delightful time exploring the joys of the Margaret River region as you inspect these works of Art and travel around this wonderful district.

WELCOME......to all our participating artists and to all the art-loving and curious visitors who will call in and explore the studios that will be open for viewing between April 19th and May 4th.2014 is the inaugural year of the Margaret River Region Open Studios and the Board are highly encouraged that over 80 artists are participating in the Event. We thank our artists for their enthusiasm and enriching our lives by sharing their creative talents. We would not have got to this stage without the tireless energy of Mechelle Bernhardt, our Marketing Director and of Emily Douglas of Emily Douglas Design, who have masterminded the design and creation of all MRROS marketing material including brochure, flyer, event catalogue and website. We also acknowledge the many other people who have played invaluable roles in getting us to where we are, and finally we thank our Supporters, Sponsors and Advertisers. We very much intend to make the Open Studios into an annual Regional Art Festival that will grow in stature and flourish year-by-year.Jillian Taylor, our Vice-Chair and Secretary, and the Board join me in thanking everyone for their wonderful contributions and support. Most importantly Margaret River Region Open Studios 2014 is about exploring the Margaret River region and immersing in the artistic experience.

The Bush House Group - Glen Knight, Kerry Rocchi and Helen Waterhouse

We are mature age women who have been painting non-professionally for a number of years and who are aware of an urgent need to reach our potential as artists. This has been fueled since we met John Garde. His teaching provides an understanding of tonal painting which links us to the great traditions of realistically representing the beauty of nature.Glen is highly motivated to capture the special light that filters through the bush at certain times of the day.Helen is inspired by colour and forms in nature and the wonder of the depths in shadows and beyond. Kerry is equally drawn to representing nature she is also experimenting with creative techniques in some of her work.

I am endlessly fascinated by new places, and constantly attempting to capture the effects of light and colour .I travel each year to paint in the Pilbara, the Kimberley and France, as well as nearer to home in the magnificent Capes area of the South-West of Western Australia. I organize and conduct group painting trips several times each year. When I’m home, I paint on commission and to exhibit , as well as teaching groups and individual students drawing and painting from my studio at Quindalup.

I have always enjoyed painting, even as a child. In my past life I was a traditional sign writer for some 30 years, I have also studied at numerous art institutions and under such artists as Brian Simmons and John Garde. The work that I do is a very stylized technique influenced by the Impressionists and the Fauvists. I mainly paint local landscapes with a twist. I have lived in the area now for 14 years and I hope to see you for a visit to my humble studio.

Adam Stanley is a seascape artist who has been surfing and painting from an early age of six. Following both passions, Adam spends most of his time in search of the perfect wave to surf and paint. Being up close to the waves in Australia while surfing and diving is where Adam finds most of his inspiration often transferring this energy onto canvas. Adams unique vibrant and highly textured style comes from being self taught and expressing his art from a surfers perspective as if you were in front of the wave about to be sucked into the painting.

My love of the environment and the outdoors inspires me.I like to work on the computer to enhance my images and make photomontages. I also print my images on cards, hand-crafted journals and tee-shirts and sell prints mounted, framed or on canvas. I have a small studio, open by appointment.

She completed a Bachelor of Fine Art in the mid 80’s and has been making two and three-dimensional art ever since. Karen’s art questions how humans interact with nature and the impact we have on our environment by layering materials related to these topics in each artwork to create visual metaphors. Her work is held in local, national and international collections.

My printmaking practice usually involves more than one printmaking technique. Either dry-point intaglio prints, copper plates which are line and aquatint etched or monotype techniques are printed first. Colour is added using a relief print using coloured oxides, lino, collagraph or hand-colouring. The layers of ink offer richness, depth and dimension while still being relatively neutral in colour.I like to use the human form to view my life and it’s interaction with the environment. Some of my prints are focused on some experiences and events in my life and the influence those times have had on my thoughts and demeanor today. Other prints I take a satirical look at life and people around me. The interplay of pattern from the domestic landscape overlays the figure to give a hint of exotic.

Willyabrup Dreaming Pottery - Bill MeiklejohnBill MeiklejohnWillyabrup DreamingWillyabrup Road, Willyabrup

Bill Meiklejohn works full time as a potter from his studio nestled in the bush at Willyabrup. Much of his work is thrown on the wheel and altered by hand producing a range of unique designs. Beautiful shell bowls, octopus vases and spoon sperm whales all reflect his love of the ocean and a sense of fun.

My art practice aspires to promote the art and making of hand-bound books, in order to rekindle, restore and extend the relationship - visual, emotional and tactile experience, of beautiful books. Teaching and making Artist books, the restoration and repair of old books, encompassing both new technologies and traditional skills. Combining mixed media and printmaking with, the layered anatomy of the book structure allows and creates an extended capacity to frame and develop both ideas and images.

By identifying and combining many facets of one moment, Coad’s muted and intense works delve deeper into subconscious thought and uncover an intimate engagement with the self.

Leon Pericles - The Falls Studio and Garden “With wit and engaging visual skill (Pericles) has enabled us to see the world from his unique perspective. (We become) more aware of the things we hold dear and the ideas that have shaped us. That’s not an easy task, but it is one that Leon has done with unique flair and quite extraordinary commitment. His work is packed tight with visual images and wonderful ideas that sweep you up with a visual whirlpool to conjure up a world of joyous engagement”.From Professor Ted Snell’s forward to the Pericles’ Book ‘Ophthalmic Confection’ 2012

Kerry Brooks I am an interior architect by day and a painter by night. Art and architecture have always gone hand in hand and I have the pleasure of exploring both the formal design elements of architecture and the sensual forms that I give life to through painting. My paintings often depict a lone female form through a vivid colour palette and a cheeky disposition.

Susan Sheppard is a realist landscape painter of bold, colourful undisturbed habitat. More than just a visual record, she works to impart a sense of awe experienced by the visit. She enjoys the problem solving in depicting water in its many forms. Her love of rocks is also apparent. By emphasizing the aspects illuminated solely by reflected light, rather than direct light, she is able to capture the colour we remember on location.

Talliesen grew up in Northern Queensland and the rich vibrant colours of that tropical environment are to be found in her work. She draws inspiration from music, poetry and sculpture and is fascinated by faces and the secrets behind them. Talliesen has a passion for mixed media, often combining found objects and papier-mâché with acrylic on canvas. She also “restores” furniture, which she calls ‘Artstoration’. Her art sometimes spills out of her studio and ends up in the garden, much to the bemusement of her neighbours!

Since I have been in Margaret River, I have taken part in local exhibitions, and fundraising art events, and I attend a figure drawing group, with a few other artists, which is the highlight of my week! I work from my studio at Prevelly near Margaret River and have developed an individual style of figurative sculpture that I believe is unique to the South West.I enjoy giving life to the ‘ordinariness’ of Australian Cultural Heritage and love to explore the psyche of what it is to be Australian. All pieces are constructed using earthenware clay, then fired and finished with a variety of patinas, and are created for both indoor and outdoor display.

Payet Designs at Payet Gallery Located 5 minutes SW of Margaret River, Payet Gallery is a purpose built working studio and gallery, showcasing the hand made designs of the Payet brothers. “I draw inspiration from nature...working with my brother Nicholas, he perfects the technical aspects of the designs. His eye for detail is exceptional, resulting in beautifully crafted and finished pieces”. Sophisticated yet simple designs accentuate the use of sparkling semi-precious stones such as peridot, tourmalines, diamonds and a luscious variety of pearls. We welcome you to view the jewellers at work from our viewing window within the gallery Tuesday to Saturday.

The focus for this collection of paintings are studies of the Margaret River landscape started on site and finished in the studio. I have been painting sketches in situ for about 25 years. It offers something that cannot be caught any other way. Seeing subtleties in both colour and feeling from the landscape, these small paintings reveal a certain intensity and passion quite often overlooked with the larger studio paintings.

Wendy Castleden I think I was born with a paintbrush in my mouth, leading to art studies in London, France, Claremont and Fremantle. Since living in Margaret River, I delight in my own studio overlooking water.Six solo exhibitions between 1993-2013, including ceramic onglaze works, which I taught in Fremantle, here, and in Aboriginal communities . Up cycling old pieces of furniture and discarded objects and turning them into works of art have always fascinated me. Several of these will be in this show

Alice’s art/style portrays the kaleidoscope of cultures and colours in contemporary scenery. From dramatic abstract impressionism to beautifully detailed street/ocean/landscapes, her work boasts an energetic youthfulness, injected with personal reflections from her own travels.

She works in oils and builds texture within the layers of a piece. Stark white and bright colours are often used in conjunction with thick, textured brush strokes to achieve a vibrancy, contrast and excitement in her subject. Alice has exhibited her work in various galleries, cafes, bars/restaurants, and art fairs in England, Western Australia and Morocco. For the past 2 years Alice has been represented by the Margaret River Gallery.

Baz Salmon My Art forms have evolved from a spiritual awakening/self realization experience. I was not a spiritual seeker and had no formal religious beliefs. In July 2005 I came across an article in a magazine, on a Spiritual teacher called Eckhart Tolle. The following day I bought Eckhart Tolles book “ The Power of Now “. I continually read this book(and others since)and in doing so my life began to change. I began to discover who I truly am.
