WelcomeWelcome to everyone who chooses to visit any of the Open Studios and Venues over the 16 days of the 3rd Margaret River Region Open Studios (MRROS) Event, which runs between 9th and the 24th April 2016.

We welcome the new artists who are participating for the first time and really appreciate the enthusiasm of the artists who are opening up their studios to visitors for the second or even the third consecutive year. MRROS thanks them all for their willingness to share their creativity with the wider community.

During the year Jillian Taylor, the co-founder of MRROS, retired. Without her MRROS would not have come about. We extend our thanks to Jillian for everything she did for MRROS.

Julien Sanderson, Secretary and Hon Treasurer, took over the Chair while Wendy and I were overseas for 5 months during which Jane Holland, having moved out of the area, also retired from the Board. The Board has been renewed with the appointments of Jo Broadhurst, Fi Wilkie and John Miller.

The MRROS Event would not survive without the enthusiastic marketing and communication energy of Mechelle Bernhardt and Emily Douglass skill and patience. And MRROS would wilt without its remarkable volunteers; Anita Haywood continued as liaison person with Advertisers and Sponsors and Genny Broadhurst continued creating and editing the monthly MRROS newsletter. This year Niomi OHara took on the task of Grant-seeker.

In 2015 MRROS received a $10000 Icon Award from the Shire of Augusta Margaret River and a $5000 Major Tourism Award from the City of Busselton. We also received a $12000 grant from the Friends of the SW Community and $4000 from the SW Development Commission as well as several smaller but nonetheless important grants. John Miller from John Miller Design continued as MRROS Gold Sponsor. Nearly all our sponsors and advertisers continued their commitment to MRROS. This stronger financial backing and the wonderful support of the local Margaret River Busselton Tourism Association has meant that MRROS has been able to better market the event this year so we anticipate a further increase in the number of visitors this year. Thank you all for your support.

Above all, the Board and I hope that visitors will enjoy engaging with the artistic talent of the Margaret River Region while discovering as many of the regions remarkable attractions as possible.

The Margaret River Region Open Studios is the biggest art event of its kind in Australia. It offers art lovers a vibrant feast of the visual arts scene in the Margaret River Region and the rare chance to visit private art studios which may not otherwise be open to the public to meet artists and view their works in progress.

Stretching from Cape Naturaliste to Cape Leeuwin visitors can simultaneously explore the beautiful South West region of WA whilst exploring art studios of 107 established and emerging artists working across many art categories. There is huge scope to discover, enjoy and purchase original art and to get up close and personal with painters, printmakers, sculptors, ceramicists, jewellers, photographers, textile artists and environmentally focused up-cycling artists.

Throughout this 16-day event visitors can move from venue to venue. Each open studio is identified on the maps in this Catalogue. Entry is free.

We are delighted to be the foundation patrons of Margaret River Region Open Studios (MRROS).

Having had hands on experience with visual art on our wine labels and performing art at the concerts at Leeuwin Estate in Margaret River for some 40 years we have experienced first hand the very positive effect artists creativity can have on a business.

MRROS is proving to be a great stimulus for the arts community of the Cape-to-Cape Region of South Western Australia. This year 107 artists are displaying their works and creativity while opening their venues to

    the public throughout the district.

We wish all involved with the 2016 MRROS event enormous success and encourage you, the public, to venture out and about to enjoy these 16 days of cultural exploration in our very special South West environment.

I have always had a love of painting, especially painting seascapes with pastels. I love the beauty and depth of the colours required to recreate the natural environment. In particular the coastlines around Esperance, Albany, and from Dunsborough to Busselton inspire me. My subjects are all chosen for the sense of peacefulness it brings me. It is my hope that others see this translated in my finished work.

My Mum inspired me to expand my creativity when I was very young and living in the outback, through sewing, cooking, collecting, arranging and drawing wildflowers which led me to a life long interest in all forms of art. Years later in my 40s I studied part time at Claremont School of Art and worked in many mediums. I have had several successful solo exhibitions and taken part in many collaborative exhibitions. I enjoy working en plein air with water colour and am inspired to explore all forms of nature and atmosphere in landscape. P: 0406 539 572 E: [email protected]

I studied fine art in the 1980s at Stellenbosch University. After years of designing and installing gardens, Ive loved rediscovering my paintbox.Im driven by two themes- Capturing the locals of Busselton, both four and two legged. This finds me driving the back roads of Jindong, lurking in pig pens and wading the Busselton wetlands. The other theme, is migration, especially womans stories. A subject dear to my heart as I immigrated with my husband in 1986.

On occasion, throughout my life, my creativity has been expressed in various ways. In recent years I have reconnected with the visual artist that was resting within. I have a particular interest in animal portraiture, however my subject matter is wide and varied. I like exploring different mediums, with a focus on acrylics and oils. I love the diversity, colours, patterns and textures that the natural world gives us and this is reflected in my work.

Being a fourth generation farming local, my art reflects my passion for our farming and coastal lifestyle. The light and colours around me are what I love to share with anyone willing to stop and smell the proverbial roses. Because my tastes are eclectic, so is my art, including the use of pastel, acrylic, oils, porcelain, ink, wax and mixed media - to portray people, animals and sea/landscapes. We live in the most awesome part of the world, and I am continually inspired to share my view of it.

The concept of my work is based on a search for the inherent qualities of light, colour and form that comprises the basic elements of beauty. With a multimedia approach incorporating painting, installation and photography I create layers that explore these aesthetic qualities and reveal them in abstraction. My inspiration is drawn from both natural and urban environments.

My work varies from being stylized and semi-abstract, to realistic, impressionistic depending on the theme. At present I am fascinated with simplifying reality into minimal shapes and tonal changes - as if blurring the detail. I also love the opportunity to play with colour combinations and distortions with the intention to capture the moment, making a statement on any wall! Figurative themes appeal because they relate to everyday experiences, as well as our beautiful turquoise waters, which remind us of the healthy lifestyle that surrounds us.

Adam Stanley is a seascape artist who has been surfing and painting from the early age of six. Following both passions, Adam spends most of his time in search of the perfect wave to surf and paint. Being up close to the waves in Australia while surfing and diving is where Adam finds most of his inspiration often transferring this energy onto canvas. Adams unique vibrant and highly textured style comes from being self-taught and expressing his art from a surfers perspective as if you were in front of the wave about to be sucked into the painting.

My journey with art began as a child with the desire to paint with water colours. I so liked the way the paint flowed and blended together resulting in unexpected effects. It was much later that I took up painting in earnest and it is only now in the third age that I have discovered oils and some of their possibilities. Last year the focus was on rare french pots. This year, after a trip to France inspiration has come from the beautiful landscapes and scenery of Provence. How soft is the light? This is the third year Ive been involved with MRROS and have enjoyed the exposure to the public greatly. For those who have seen my artwork, this year I will still be favouring the impressionist and fauvist style. Along with local scenes, there will be a selection of work from France and other parts of Europe. this came about from a wonderful trip to Monets garden in Giverny, France. My history with painting spans thirty years of signwriting and most of my life with artistic pursuits, namely drawing and oil painting.

Mary-Lynne works from her studio in the Yallingup hills where she has lived for 28 years. She continually explores the landscape around her in the south west and northern parts of WA and the Northern Territory. Some works are more abstract than others but are always influenced by the landscape. It is important to capture the feeling, memory and spirit of the place rather than create a realistic portrayal. I like my work to be as spontaneous and gestural as possible, allowing for interesting passages of paint to guide me. Water and reflections in ponds and rivers also play a huge role in my relationship with the paint and the memory of the landscape. Represented by Yallingup Galleries.

I love to paint. Most of my practice focuses on Native flora, fauna and marine life, striving to capture colour, life and movement in representational form. I have developed my own technique of mixed-media painting on recycled roofing iron, mounted on timber. I use the same technique to indulge my fertile imagination in a series of whimsical figurative works. My passion for art began as a child and has stretched through a vast range of artist endeavours including Managing and Curating Art Galleries and Exhibitions, oil portraiture, relief sculpture, cartooning & caricatures, mural painting and gardening.P: 0448 617 889 E: [email protected]

I love knowing that my pieces bring beauty into someones home.Tova creates with clay from her studio/gallery. Combining a variety of techniques: throwing, slip casting and hand building she creates pieces for everyday use as well as collection pieces. The distinctive gold and silver Persian lustre used on many of the pots transforms her work into jewelled objects. Tova intuitively explores and experiments with various approaches using clay as her artistic medium. The peaceful and beautiful environment fuels her creativity. My large figurative ceramic sculptures are based within our Australian culture. Exploring and constructing perceived Australian Icons has been an element of my ongoing practice for some time now. It is these Icons with their wry reflections of us that I enjoy representing back to viewers. The pieces generally stand between 70cm to 150cm high, and are built using a clay armature with cold glaze finish. You are welcome at my studio.

Phil has always had an affinity with art ,in particular painting. He is constantly influenced by his natural surroundings and love of the ocean which is reflected in his works and life as an artist. His travels to Europe and the Middle- East in his early days, and time spent in Broome and remote WA islands inspires his strong use of colour and semi-abstract style. His continuing inspiration comes from living in the Margaret River region since 1996, where the local bush and coastal areas feature strongly in his paintings. Born with a paint brush in my mouth which lead to seeking out art studies wherever and whenever the possibilities arose. I am always seeking new ideas. Having spent many months recently travelling through Europe by train there have been many incidents to inspire the work I am producing at the moment. During 24 days of travel commencing in Cadiz, Spain, I worked around the 24 hour clock, sketching for one hour each day progressing by one hour. This formula took me through the night hours in Eastern Europe to the midday sun in South Turkey.

I have loved being creative for as long as I can remember. I am very lucky now to have my own little studio on our property near Witchcliffe, where I divide my time working in a variety of mediums including mosaics, soapstone sculptures and acrylic paint on plant pots, gourds and the occasional canvas. My love of gardening and nature are the main sources of my creative inspiration, and I love combining the two. It gives me great pleasure creating bright colourful fun pieces that bring a splash of joy to others.
