Upala was back home from school. She slammed her school bag on

the ground and began to jump for joy.

Why? Because she had got a part in the school play which would be

staged on the day of concert and prize distribution. She would act as

a princess in the play-The Princess who didnt laugh. She had

copied her part in her exercise copy. She remembered the lines and

thought of repeating them to herself.I am the Princess of Merryland!She shouted, But I do not laugh.

Suddenly she remembered that her grandfather was taking his

afternoon nap in his room. If he wakes up, he will give her a good

shouting. So she fell silent. Shhhhh-she said softly.

Then she saw the spider, hanging on a fine silken thread and

watching her closely.

She puffed at it again.

But it was not an ugly black spider, like the one that makes webs in

the corner of her room. It was beautiful, round and portly with two

very bright eyes fixed on her.

Mr.Pinkball.the spider replied.

Hello Mr.Pinkball.Iam Upala.Upala told and held out herhand.Mr.Pinkball caught her hand and gave it a vigorous shake.

Nice to meet you he said.

What else do you do, other than catching flies?Upala asked him.

I dont catch FliesMr.Pinkball replied with a sneer.I weave cloth

for the fairies of Fairy land. Yarns and yarns of cloth of the softest

silk.

Where do you stay?Upala asked ,her eyes wide with surprise.

In your mothers rose garden. I weave silken webs

stretching from one rose bush to another. The fairies come on

moonlit nights, role them up in bales, and carry them away to Fairy

land to make dresses and saris out ofthem. He said.

But they are always white. Do the fairies only wear white?Upala

asked. The spider laughed softly and said He, he, he. You cant

imagine the range of colours they die their clothes in. Blue of the sky

and green of the grass, the seven colours of the rainbow, and pink

from the pinkest of roses. Some are dusted with stardust which the

fairies collect when they catch the falling stars.

Upala wished for such a dress for herself. How beautiful she would

look if she wore such a dress on the day of concert. She would look

like a real princess and how jealous would the other girls feel!

for me. She told the spider.

How can they? They dont even know you! he replied.
