Preliminaries “The land in Africa now called Liberia

was originally named the Grain Coast by 15th-century Portuguese explorers who were impressed by its abundance of grain. In 1820, freed slaves from the United States founded Liberia, a name that means ‘Land of the Free.’”

In your notebooks, why do you think the founders of Liberia felt it was necessary to change their country’s name from the Grain Coast to Liberia?
