    About this Guidebook

    This Guidebook for MPhil Studiesis prepared to provideprospective appli cants, students and supervisors with

    relevant information on the Master of Philosophy

    programme offered by the University.

    The section on Admissionsprovides information on entry

    requirements of the programme and other admissions-

    related information. The Areas of Research Interest

    section contains information on the areas of research

    interests of our academic staff. The Appendicesset out

    important references, such as regulations for the

    programme, administrative procedures and the like, for

    students, supervisors and administrative staff.

    Other Prospectuses

    In addition to the Master of Philosophy programme, the

    University also offers full-time degree programmes and

    other postgraduate, degree or sub-degree programmes

    through distance learning. Details of these programmes

    Mission

    The mission of The Open University of Hong Kong is to make higher ed

    available to adults, principally through a system of open access and d

    education.

    Entry requirements

    To be eligible for admission to the degree of Master of Philosophy, an applicant shall a first or second class honours degree from a tertiary education i nstitution rec

    purpose by the Research Degrees Committee (RDC);

    or

    any other equivalent qualifications, or provide evidence of academic and profess

    acceptable for this purpose to the RDC.

    An applicant shall satisfy the RDC that he/she has sufficient command of the lanChinese or English) in which the course of study and research is to be undertaken

    No applicant who is already a candidate for a degree at this or another institution ma

    Application for admission to the Master of Philosophy degree may be made thro

    Each applicant can only submit one complete set of application papers as follows:

    An application acknowledgement which consists of an application number w

    by mail within 2 weeks of the submission of the application. Applicants are

    Assessment of application

    Appl ications wi ll be assessed individually. Applicants may be required to atten

    Notification of results

    Notification of the results of the applications will normally be sent to successfu

    Students with an OUHK Master card can apply for the Interest-free Tuition Loan offe

    Lung Bank (Enqui ries: 2928 6668). Students may also apply for a loan under the

    Financial Assistance Scheme, education loans from other banks or the Non-means-tes

    by the Government through the Student Financial Assistance Agency (SFAA) to cove

    tuition fee. (Continuation fee is not included.) (OUHK enquiries: 2768 6636; SFAA

    2345, web site: http://www.sfaa.gov.hk/).

    Students with disabilities

    The University has a range of facilities and equipment, donated by The Hong Ko

    Charities Trust, The S K Yee Medical Foundation and The Sir Robert Ho Tung Char

    can facilitate study. Admission materials can be made available on request in o

    applicants with special needs.

    Applicants are encouraged to inform the University of their type of disability or their

    in the admission application form. Otherwise, the OUHK would not be able to pro

    services for them.

    Appendix 1Regulations for the Degree of Master of Philosophy

    1 General

    1.1 These regulations are made under paragraphs 1 to 3 and 7 of the Regulatio

    of Postgraduate Degrees.

    1.2 In these regulations defini tions shall apply as in the Regulations for the Awar

    Degrees and in the Interpretation Section of the Academic Rules and Reg

    2.1 The Research Degrees Committee (referred to in these Regulations as

    approve applications for and oversee the progress of all students registered o

    as required in these regulations.

    3 Entry Requirements

    3.1 To enter the Master of Philosophy programme, a student shall possess:

    3.1.1 a first or second class honours degree from a tertiary education instit

    for this purpose by the RDC;

    OR

    3.1.2 any other equivalent quali fications, or provide evidence of

    professional attainments acceptable for this purpose to the RDC.

    3.2 An applicant shall satisfy the RDC that he/she has suffici ent command

    (normally Chinese or English) in which the course of study and research is

    and in which the thesis is to be presented. At the time of admission, the RD

    3.3 No applicant who is already a candidate for a degree at this or another in

    Appendix 2Administrative Procedures for the Degree of Master of P

    1 Admission

    1.1 Pre-application inqui ries wi ll be directed by the Registry to the researc

    person(s) in the relevant School. The contact person may in turn di rec

    applicant to the potential supervisor who may be a member of the Schoostaff in any other unit.

    1.2 Applicants will be encouraged to submit their applications for admission to

    together with a brief research proposal, preferably after consulting the pote

    3 Termination of Registration

    3.1 The Principal Research Supervisor may recommend to the RDC, thro

    Board, termination of registration of any student due to lack of pro

    studies and research or failure to comply with the Regulations.

    3.2 The RDC wi ll consider the recommendation and, if appropriate

    terminate registration. The Registry will issue a notice of termination to

    in accordance with the decision of the Senate.

    3.3 A student who wishes to appeal against the decision of the Senate t

    shall do so in writing to the Registrar within 10 calendar days o

    termination.

    3.4 The Registrar shall direct the appeal to the Dean of the School or, if t

    to a senior academic appointed by the Senate for investigation

    considered only if there has been a material administrative error, o

    irregularity. The Registrar will report the matter to the Senate for con

    the Dean/Senate nominees recommendation. The decision of the

    9.3 A registered student may present a thesis only after the expiry of the mini

    9.4 A student who anticipates that the thesis cannot be submitted by the expiry

    9.6.1 a certi ficate from the Principal Research Supervisor to the effect

    prima facie worthy of examination;

    9.6.2 a short abstract of 200-300 words summarizing the contents of the

    11 Appointment of Examiners

    11.1 After the candidate has given notice of his/her intention to present a

    recommendation of the School Course Result Group (SCRG) s

    Committee. The Award Committee should be chaired by the Dea

    12.5 After the Examiners reports on the thesis are received, the Regis

    examination for the student. The oral examination can take t

    conferencing or tele-conferencing, where possible, if the External Ex

    no local examiner has been appointed in place of the External Exam

    13.4 After considering the report of the Award Committee and of the additional E

    the SCRG will make a final recommendation on the examination result f

    by the RDC.

    13.5 In its report, the Award Committee shall make one of the following recom

    either

    13.5.1 that the degree of MPhil be awarded; or

    13.5.2 that the degree of MPhil be awarded subject to the candidat

    corrections to the thesis (where the corrections are not so substan

    recommendation that the student should submit a revised thesis);

    13.5.3 that the degree of MPhil be not awarded but that the candidate

    submit a revised thesis and to present him/herself for examina

    subsequent occasion; or

    13.5.4 that the degree of MPhil be not awarded and that the Registration

    13.6 The Report of the Award Committee shall be confidential to the SCRG an

    14 Re-examination

    14.1 Where a student has been permitted to present a revised thesis and

    for examination again on a subsequent occasion, the arrangemenexamination shall be as if the candidate were being examined for th

    Appendix 4Guidelines for the Appointment of Research Degree

    1 Eligibility

    1.1 Full -time academic staff, or other members of staff approved by the

    appointed at the Assistant Professor level (and normally with a m

    experience at that level) or above are eligible for appointment a

    Supervisors.

    1.2 Supervisors for MPhil degrees should normally possess a PhD and

    in leading and supervising research and research degree students.

    1.3 Individuals wi thout formal supervisory experience may also be cons

    as Associate Research Supervisors on the recommendation of the app

    and the endorsement of the RDC on the basis of the scholarly achexpertise of the individual.

    1.4 Individuals who are not full-time staff of the University may a

    appointment as Associate Research Supervisors on the recommend

    Dean of School and the endorsement of the RDC for continuation o

    areas outside Hong Kong.

    2 Non-eligibility

    2.1 A person who is a candidate for a research degree of this University o

    will normally be ineligible to act as a Supervisor.

    3 Appointment Procedures

    Appendix 5Research Degree Supervision: A Code Of Practice

    1 Preamble

    1.1 The Senate has agreed to the promulgation of this Code of Practice for

    supervi sion. It sets out what the University regards as the responsibilities

    well as of research degree students and provides a basic framework withi

    degree candidatures wi ll be pursued. The Code wi ll be made available t

    as well as to all research degree students.

    1.2 This document should be read in conjunction w ith the Regulations an

    Procedures for the Degree of Master of Philosophy.

    1.3 A School may have its own Code provided it does not contravene the Co

    document.

    1.4 The University attaches considerable importance to effective research de

    A Terms of Reference

    1. To receive and approve appli cations for admission to a post-gradu

    programme of the University.

    2. To prescribe special conditi ons for admission to a post-graduaprogramme of the University.

    3. To assure itself that adequate provision is available for the sat

    supervision of the proposed programme of study and research.

    4. To determine the programme of study and research, starting date a
