2008-09 was a memorable year for Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association. It was a year which
saw cricket being played under floodlights in our stadium. It was the season which saw Madhya
Pradesh Girls making history by winning the Junior National Crown and the Senior Women’s team
reaching the final of the senior national championship. Also a year in which our junior cricketers
performed well to show us light at the end of the tunnel.
Condolences : We lost some of our esteemed members during the year gone by. We mourn
the sad demise of Shri Prakash Sharma, who was a very active member of the association in the
eighties. We will also miss our members Shri Prakash Jain and Shri Ramnikbhai Doshi and former
Ranji player Raja Uday Singh. We also mourn the death of all those cricketers, cricket
administrators and other luminaries who passed away during the last year.
One Day International at Indore On 17 Nov 2008 : The match was a resounding success. With
the installation of the roof complete, the stadium looked really beautiful. All the spectators could
watch the match under shed. The newly built fully air conditioned and well equipped Press Box
added to the glamour of the stadium. We received accolades from the national as well as
international media for the wonderful arrangements. The match was a huge success with the India
team emerging victorious and also fetching us a profit of around 2.50 Crores before distribution.
Women's U-19 Inter State Tournament : The junior girls surprised everybody by lifting the
National Crown. It was only the second time Madhya Pradesh won a tournament at National Level
after the Wills Trophy triumph. In the league stage M.P. defeated Rajasthan and Vidarbha, but lost to
Uttar Pradesh. Shaila Alam performed well with the ball. In the second stage, M.P. defeated
Jharkhand, Andhra Pradesh, Mumbai, and Punjab to finish at the top of the league. In the final
match M.P. defeated Delhi by two wickets in an exciting match. Requiring 111 to win M.P. won the
match in 45.3 overs. Shakti Raut with the ball and Varsha Choudhary with both the ball and bat
performed well. The top scorer in the tournament for us was Shweta Mishra (243 runs) followed by
Varsha Choudhary (176 runs). In the bowling department Varsha Choudhary, Shaila Alam, Shakti
Raut and Pallavi Bhardwaj shared the wickets almost equally.
Senior Women’s Inter State Championship : Madhya Pradesh lost to star studded Railways
in the final but prior to that put up a good show. In the league stage M.P. started the winning run by
handing out innings defeat to Rajasthan. Ranjana Gupta (8 wickets) and Ketki Puntambekar (143
runs) performed well. We conceded the lead to Uttar Pradesh and Railways. Vaishali Jain got an
innings haul of 5 wickets against Railways. But first innings points against Vidarbha were enough
for us to qualify. The knock out stage was played in Baroda. M.P. first defeated Himachal by 111 runs
despite being bowled out for 35 runs in the second innings. Next up were Mumbai. Ruchita Buley
(123 runs) and Nidhi Buley (5 wickets) got us the all important lead. The semi final was a low
scoring affair in which M.P. got the edge by 49 run on first innings. In the final match M.P. found the
stumbling blocks in the shape of Railways who had almost an India line up. However it was a

commendable performance overall. Ruchita Buley (357 runs) Ketki Puntambekar (325 runs) were
successful with the bat while Ranjana Gupta (27 wickets) and Nidhi Buley (15 wickets) shone with
the ball.
Vijay Merchant Trophy (U-16) : The young guns of the state put up an admirable show
reaching the semi final before misfortune in the shape of rains spelt the end to their efforts. M.P
started very well to grab the first innings points against the strong Uttar Pradesh team. Parth Sahani
(190 runs and 3 wickets) being the star. M.P. conceded the lead to Vidarbha but got the all important
outright win against Rajasthan. Tanmay Patwardhan (10 wickets) did the damage. In the quarter
final Ashutosh Singh (127 runs) helped M.P. sail through. In the semi final M.P. were well placed to
take the lead but rains rendered the ground unplayable. M.P. were knocked out on net run rate.
Tanmay Patwardhan with six wickets in the match finished with 24 in the tournament. He was
helped adequately by Parth Sahani (346 runs & 16 wickets), Aditya Shrivastava (252 runs) and
Ashutosh Singh (251 runs)
Ranji Trophy : It was another year when our team flattered to deceive. Placed in Plate “B”
group of the tournament, M.P.got off to a flying start in the season defeating Vidarbha by 10 wickets
in the very first match. Sunil Dopier with 12 wickets led the way. In the second match at Gwalior M.P.
got the important first innings lead against Bengal. We played host to Assam in our third match and
defeated them by an innings and 59 runs. Our fast bowlers did well and Naman Ojha complemented
their efforts with a brilliant century. Than came the downward phase. Our boys failed to win against
Services and Tripura thus losing the number one position in the group. We played in the semi final
and needed to win that match for a place in Elite group next season. Unfortunately we collapsed
from 180 for 2 to 228 all out on the first day and Himachal batsmen finished the match scoring 579
runs. Though our fast bowlers performed well, our batsmen did not support them enough. The only
shining light was Jalaj Saxena who got three consecutive centuries (the first M.P. player to achieve
this feat)
Vijay Hazare Trophy One Dayers : We hosted the Central Zone league but failed to grab the
home advantage. We started well defeating Vidarbha by 7 wickets. But our inability to win the bonus
point in that match probably cost us a place in the knock out stage. We lost to U.P. and Rajasthan
and won the last match against Railways. It was Railways who qualified ahead of us. The better
performers in this tournament were the skipper Hrishikesh Kanitkar and Jalaj Saxena but the others
failed to support the duo.
C.K. Nayudu Trophy (U-22) : The Ranji hopefuls put up a sorry performance this year. The
team lost outright against Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Railways and conceded the first innings
points to Vidarbha. Two of our losses came despite taking the first innings lead. The only bright spot
was Leg Spinner Asif Ali who picked up 13 wickets in the two matches he played.
Cooch Behar Trophy (U-19) : Once again our inability to perform well in big matches denied
us a place in Elite Group. Placed in Plate ‘B’ group, M.P. started the campaign in style defeating
Gujarat by six wickets despite being bowled out for 95 in first innings and conceding a lead of 151
runs. Rameez Khan got a match winning 153 in the second innings. M.P. then defeated Goa by 9
13
wickets. Harpreet Singh Bhatia getting scores of 115 & 71 Not Out. In the third match M.P. gave
away the first innings points to Hyderabad. Harpreet Singh Bhatia got 150 in the first innings, while
Rameez Khan (119 N.O.) and Satyam Choudhary (162 N.O.) were the contributors in the second.
M.P. disposed of Tripura by 4 wickets again after conceding the first innings lead. Harpreet Singh
Bhatia got his third consecutive century of the tournament. Against Railways too, M.P. conceded
first innings lead of 76 runs but came back fighting to win by 30 runs. This time it was speedster
Pankaj Rao doing the star turns by grabbing five wickets in the second innings. The fighting
instincts of the lads finally let them down in the Plate semi final against Jharkhand and then in the
third-fourth place match against Delhi. Captain Harpreet Singh Bhatia (709 runs), Rameez Khan
(522 runs), Satyam Choudhary (497 runs) were the top batters while Pankaj Rao (38 wickets) was
the top bowler. Amarjeet Singh (193 runs and 25 wickets) performed well in both departments.
Vinoo Mankad Trophy (U-19) One Dayers : It was a bad start to the season for the M.P. lads.
We won two and lost two matches. But unfortunately we conceded bonus points in the matches we
lost.We won against Rajasthan by just one run. Harpreet Singh Bhatia (168 runs) and Rameez Khan
( 134 runs) performed well but they got no support from others.
Women’s Senior One Day Championship : Despite two wins, one loss and a tie, M.P. were
denied a place in the knock out round of this tournament. M.P lost badly to Railways conceding 324
runs and being bowled out for 122. The last match of the league was an exciting ‘tie’ with both teams
scoring 133. M.P needed 6 off the last over but could score only five. Babita Mandlik (116) and
Pallavi Bhardwaj ( 8 wickets) were the top performers.
Floodlights at the Stadium : The MPCA Stadium bathed in lights was a truly wonderful
sight.Thousands of cricket lovers thronged the stadium just to have a glimpse of the lights when the
trials were being conducted. Installed at a cost of about 5.60 crores (including cost of D.G. sets) this
facility will enable us to host Day/Night matches.
Land Purchase for Divisions : In our endeavour to provide the associations with
infrastructure, 11 acres land was purchased at Jabalpur for the use of Jabalpur Division.
Vijay Merchant Trophy (U-16) Knock out round : The knock out round of the tournament was
shifted to M.P. at a short notice and we organized the tournament very well. Nine matches were
organized by us. Unfortunately M.P lost in the semi final to Punjab on net run rate. In the final
Punjab defeated Delhi to lift the coveted trophy.
T-20 Tournament at Indore : As decided in the managing committee meeting, Indore
Divisional Cricket Tournament hosted the first ever Inter Divisional 20-20 Tournament for
J.N.Bhaya trophy. The event was a great success with matches being played under lights at the
MPCA stadium and watched by thousands of spectators. It was a treat to watch the stadium under
lights. Rewa Division won the final surprising one and all. We congratulate Rewa Division for the
success and Indore Divisional Cricket association for their efforts.

year but to prepare a well trained force of players, trainers and analysts so that they transmit the
