Quite an exciting month, June was. The 2010 FIFA World Cup started, a former Shanghai Stuff member was human-flesh-searched, and the “Stuffies” was

established amid fanfare and controversy. (You know you’ve got everybody’s attention when your party nearly starts a riot!) Oh and the humidity! The goddamn humidity!

Despite its rocky inception, attendees say the first Stuffies was a huge success. So, round of applause to Paul and his team for a job well done. The first time for anything is always a learning experience, so I’m sure members can expect the next Stuffies to be even better. Because next time there’s gonna be an award for Best Online Magazine Made By Members, right??

Anyway, a new Managing Editor should be writing this letter starting with the next issue because we’re finally getting a bit organized. Just a little bit. And if you have any complaints about MOZIMOGO, now’s the time to send them in because somebody else will be reading them. It’s been fun, but the janitor has to get back to janiting.

That’s all, folks. Enjoy MOZIMOGO #3!

No Bull SheetDear EE,

I have a question that might sound kind of silly but this issue seems to be af-fecting the relationship between my GF and me. My GF wears push-up bras and shows quite a bit of cleavage all the time, even to work. Sometimes there is, I consider, a lot of her cleavage on show, like when we go out to a club or some-thing. I feel like she does it for attention from other men and it pisses me off re-ally bad. She claims it has nothing to do with other men and does it for herself. Well yeah for herself, as men will give her attention, I say.

On the weekend, she wore a shirt that showed a lot of cleavage and because of it, there were lots of men staring at her. One man in particular was staring all night and I got pissed off which made her pissed off. She said that I was acting immature and asked me why I would let some jerk ruin our night out. She said, ‘so what?’ adding that she was out with me. I can’t tell her not to do it as that is a control issue and that isn’t right either. Am I over-reacting? If so, how can I get over this? What’s your opinion?

Thanks,Eoo

How much cleavage is too much?

10 MoziMogo 2010 July

EE saysDear Eoo,

How dare they! How dare she!I am sure you never noticed her bosom

the first time you laid your googly eyes on her. All you ever see are her sparkling eyes and pearly white teeth, not to men-tion her charm and wit. Yeah, all other men are bastards who only want to bury their face in her glorious chest. Not you! No, sir!! You love her for her intelligence and personality!

I admire you for your high morals! I echo your disdain of other men who even dare to think of looking at her!

As for your darling love, I suggest you watch her like a hawk, suffocate her with your jealousy and squash her with your chauvinism. THAT’S THE TICKET!!!

Sorry, I got too excited to answer your question. You are correct that she is do-ing it for attention. Duh!!! But you picked her, you should ask yourself why. Then, you will have all the answers to your questions in life.

Good Luck,EE

Am I just a booty call?Dear EE,

A girl I’ve been dating for 4 months now is developing an annoying habit. She comes over, we really enjoy each other’s company, we end up in bed, I do every thing I can to make her feel incredible (I’m talking a lot of effort on my part), she returns nothing, gets her rocks off and within 10 to 20 minutes she gets dressed and leaves right when I’m ready to do it all over again. :(

The last time I felt really hurt and I think she noticed, but it didn’t slow her stride toward the door. I thought only guys had a reputation for pulling this sh@#.

Is it possible she’s making sure we (or I) don’t fall in love?

Sincerely,Sigh

EE saysDear Sigh,

Yes. Next time you should think about a fee or get a “head,” whichever you find is more appropriate.

Consider yourself lucky to have some-one who isn’t playing games with you. She is, so far, pretty straightforward with her intentions. If you are seeking more than sex, like a foot massage or a bad-minton partner, then asking the right per-son would be a good start.

Read the signs and trust your instincts, bro.

Good Luck,EE

Men Make FireDear Caveman,

I need some advice. About a year ago a co-worker started to show interest in me. We are both in relationships and want to keep it that way. It started when he start-ed dropping hints about being interested in me. I at first did not react but over time after he continued to pursue, and I start-ed flirting back.

It went from just talk to physical. I was on cloud nine and felt wonderful about myself. We became extremely attracted to each other and though we had not at this point had sex, we wanted it bad and would often talk about getting together. We had a lot of closed-door meetings with a lot of touching and feeling.

Eight months ago we finally did what both of us wanted so much. (Again this was never a love thing but more of an in-fatuation.) He continued to pursue me and on a business trip we got together again.

After the business trip things seemed to have changed. I am extremely com-fortable with pursuing him now, which I was a little shy before. Kind of like a Pan-dora’s box has been opened. But I feel that he has stopped. He is not making contact like before. No more looks, no more touching. I plan a meeting and he makes excuses. When I ask him (which is often) if he still wants to continue, he says YES, don’t you??! I say yes of course.

The last encounter (which did not hap-

pen) I told him I’m going to stop this. He said he doesn’t want me to and that the “stars” are just not aligned, and it will happen. I said you do not pay attention to me as you once did, and he said it is all in my head.

I am of the personality where if I don’t get an answer, I often push harder. I can’t get it out of my mind and when it does not happen I start to think something is wrong with me or what did I do. Many many emotions sink in.

Again I asked are you interested, and he continued to say he is very much. But he seems nervous about doing the things we did behind closed doors, which he was not in the past. Says he does not want to get caught. Did not seem to bother him before.

Is he playing mind games with me? Do you think he is still interested? How should I continue? I feel I need to back off but just can’t seem to detach myself, and I run conversations in my head that we have had over and over again. Is he telling me these things to avoid conflict or upsetting me? When I say I ask him about it a lot, I do. Probably two or three times a week. HELP! I need some an-swers and advice.

Regards,Office Lady

The Caveman saysDear Office Lady,

He was interested in you because it was wrong, and you were hard to get. Now you have no problem with his ad-vances, and he has gone from hunting you to being fed by you. No moral dilem-ma, no chase, so no bang bang. Prob-ably the same reason he’s cheating on his girlfriend.

Close your legs and maybe he’ll be-come interested again. Otherwise, flirt with another coworker in front of him to give him a sense of competition. The man doesn’t need you. He needs to hunt.

We’ve all heard of teenagers who leave China to study abroad, but rarely do

we meet a teen from another country who grew up in China. Tiae was just 12

when her family moved from Australia to Shanghai. Now 18, she’s a part-time

DJ and aspires to save the dolphins. We discuss her unique education, growing

up as a white girl in Shanghai, and her father’s mysterious occupation.

daniel: three vowels in a row! How do you pronounce your name?

tiae: My name is like “Tia.” The E is silent. Yeah I know it’s strange.

What is your typical day like?

I don’t really have a typical day, my days are usually unexpected. Some days I can just be lazy and sit at home and others I will go out on the town, exploring Shanghai. That’s the thing about Shanghai, you never know what to

expect. There is always something new and exciting just outside your door.

What type of music do you play when you DJ?

I mash. I play anything from AC/DC to the Spice Girls to commercial hip-hop all with electro beats. I like to keep the dancefloor moving.

Where have you played? What was your first DJ gig like?

I didn’t really have a big first gig, my elder brother

managed a club and they had a DJ set so I would play around on it. Sometimes I would play for a few hours and others I would play all night. It got my confidence up big time. Most DJs learn to DJ and start playing at a club after a few months or a year. I started within a few weeks of learning. It was the best way to evolve. When you are playing in front of people constantly, you try your best not to mess up, so as a beginner I had the

Page 17: MOZIMOGO #3 July

advantage of having a crowd to watch me.

I have DJ’ed in a bunch of places, from Friday night clubs like Sky to Chinese MT. Last Christmas I DJ’ed in Bali. That was, by far, the most amazing night of my life, playing in front of thousands of people. It was a night to remember.

Are you in college now?

I am not in college and I am not in high school. My family moves quite a bit. And because I was

in my last two years of school, it was hard to be sure that my schooling wouldn’t be interrupted so I do homeschool. Well it’s like homeschool but it isn’t. I teach myself so I don’t have a teacher, but I have to sit end-of-year exams in New South Wales, Australia. It is rather difficult as I have to keep myself constantly motivated but I hope once I am finished with my course I will go to university in Australia and do Environmental Law.

What made you want to get into Environmental Law?

I don’t really know. I love the environment and animals. I would have chosen to become a vet but I have a thing with blood. It just seemed like something I would enjoy but I am hoping after school I can take some time off and travel with an organization like Greenpeace and help save the dolphins or something along those lines.

Page 18: MOZIMOGO #3 July

18 MoziMogo 2010 July

How do you homeschool yourself? Do you set a school schedule for yourself or do you slack off and cram right before the exam (like everybody else)?

Hmmm… Well, a bit of both. I try and set a schedule and it does work for a few days but then I get bored or have something better to do. I

try not to slack off, but it’s not easy.

How do you make friends or meet new people if you homeschool? Are your friends in Shanghai mostly “laowai” as well?

Most of my friends are foreign but I have a few local friends. I have no idea how I am going to meet people in Australia

but I am hoping that I will while working and at night while DJ-ing.

Why did your family move here? What was it like growing up as a white person in Shanghai?

I moved to Shanghai with my family when I was 12, so 6 years ago. Growing up here was one of the best experiences of my life. I grew up here with

Page 19: MOZIMOGO #3 July

my two elder brothers and my younger sister, so even in a strange city there was never a dull moment.

The best part was that I had the chance to see Shanghai develop. When we first moved here there were very few white people. We were stared at constantly. It didn’t help that my sister and I had blonde hair and my brothers were really tall.

My family and I moved here for my father’s job. He does something with safety. I don’t really know what he does, but it’s something really complicated.

Is your father CIA? ASIS?

Ha ha! No, that would be stupid. He is a ninja.

Do you plan on staying in Shanghai?

I would love to stay in Shanghai, everyone does. I don’t think anyone would really wish to leave by choice, but this summer my father’s work is being relocated back to Australia. It is going to be really sad leaving my home behind and starting fresh in another part of the world, but having had the opportunity

Page 20: MOZIMOGO #3 July

to spend my whole teenage life in Shanghai is pretty amazing. It will be an experience I will remember forever.

But I will be coming back. If Shanghai has developed this much in such a short time I can’t wait to see how much it will develop in a few more years.

What will you miss most about Shanghai when you move again?

I am leaving mid-July to return to Australia. I am going to miss Shanghai’s

Page 21: MOZIMOGO #3 July

212010 July MoziMogo

Spotlight

crowds the most. I will miss being able to walk down the most random street and see so many random people. Shanghai is the city that never sleeps.

Do you have any other goals?

I would like to set up something to do with helping teens get through that crazy period of life. Teens don’t really have anything balanced to guide them through what they should be doing. They either have douchey

nerds explaining things or corporations telling them how to be “cool.” I want to start up a webzine that will help them know what’s up and offer teens advice to help them.

Teenagers are usually seen in two ways. They’re either young and immature and people think they act to much like children, or they grow up too fast and start doing things at such a young age like clubbing or smoking. Teens aren’t given a balance, so I would like to start

focusing on teens so they can just have fun and not have to think so much about how they should be, or having to continuously measure up to people’s expectations.

Anything else we should know about you?

I’m awesome and I’ll be back! ✖

Shrimp & Asparaguswith Tofu, Thai Basil and Mixed Vegetables

I’ve been watching too much Anthony Bourdain’s No Reserva-tions lately. Every episode of the show leaves my mouth watering for more great food. I especial-ly enjoyed his travels to Asia; all

the fresh ingredients feast your eyes, the strong aromas awaken your senses and century-old cooking techniques bring you the tastiest food on earth.

This recipe was something I cooked up after drooling over many great dish-es from the show. This is a simple stir fry that will satisfy your taste buds and tide you over until you get the chance to visit Thailand, Indonesia or anywhere in Southeast Asia to try for yourself the

great tasting local cuisine. You will need a non-stick skillet or a

wok for this recipe. All the ingredients can be found in neighborhood wet mar-kets, Carrefour, Lotus Market, City Shop or many of the other large supermarkets in Shanghai. You can substitute other types of basil for the Thai basil. If you can’t find basil in any of the markets near you then try the “Avocado Lady” at 274 Wulumuqi Zhong Lu, near Wuyuan Lu. She has everything!

On one of the sleepless nights, Karen and I stumbled into this award winning brewery and restaurant on Fuxing Xi Lu, near Yongfu Lu in the French Conces-sion—Boxing Cat Brewery (BCB).

BCB resides in a three-story modern-ized old European style house. It has a large patio and a small dinning room on the ground floor. Two large dinning rooms and a balcony occupy the second floor. In between the second and third floors, there is a private dinning room that can fit around 10 people. This little nook and cranny of a place could be very cozy for a gathering of close friends. The third floor

Shanghai is a modern, vivacious metropolis that rivals New York, London, Tokyo and Paris. Just like other great metropo-lises in the world, Shanghai is also a great place for finding delicious cuisines, cocktails, and microbrews. Yes, you heard it right, tasty beers freshly brewed in Shanghai!

is complete with a pool table, dart board and a full service bar to help the game players quench their thirst.

BCB brews its own microbrews, so ev-ery day they will have four special beers on tap for you to taste. For half a pint (13 oz), the price is 35 RMB, and for a full pint (20 oz), the damage is 45 RMB. Be-sides their own microbrews, BCB serves a variety of wine, champagne, cocktails and hard liquor. BCB also has an exten-sive food menu. You can choose from burgers, pasta, BBQ ribs, Halibut & Oys-ter fish & chips and many other mouth watering items on the menu. The aver-

Good Times

With summer finally here, the Saturday Event Group decided to visit the Happy Valley Amusement Park. Early that morning (too early for some), five wonderful women and one happy dragon from Shanghai Stuff embarked on their adventure. We had a relatively small group this time but we all agree that it was a fantastic day. And we will, for sure, do it again.

We have a similar event coming up on July 10, when we go to the Dino Beach Waterpark. Hope to see you there!

One day, Web Developer Joe said, “Let’s go karting,” so a group of us decided to go karting. Then the night before karting, Joe emailed everyone and said, “I can’t make it. Let’s postpone for a week.” DJ Fish didn’t check his email and went to the meeting place as originally planned. He called me and said, “You there yet?” I said, “Uh... Alright give me 30 minutes,” and showed up an hour later. Then we got Stock Trader Roger to come along as well. Long story short, three guys with slant eyes had a lot of beer and went karting.

This guy’s so funny.

That girl’s really cute!

Have you met this new guy?

Did you read her blog?

These are topics we talk about every time we attend a party, gather for a drink, or go to dinner with fellow members of Shanghai Stuff. So one day I thought we should cel-ebrate our membership, have a party and give some awards. With encouragement and help from my SS friends, categories were set, votes received, and awards prepared.

On June 26, 2010 at Servus Vienna, the 1st Shanghai Stuff Awards was born.

Paul’s LogFriday June 18. I get an e-mail from Chi-chi. He needs to fly back to the Philip-pines the following week, so he can-not be the host of the event. My body freezes. I need someone to replace him. I talk to the rest of guys helping me on the organization, and we all come to one name: Samba. Fortunately he accepts.

Saturday June 19. I am working on the presentation. My phone rings. Sarah (Miss Jones). I have a bad feeling. My spider sense was right: she can’t attend the party either. Frozen again. I start thinking I have a problem about getting frozen. But I can solve that later. Now I need another friend to replace Sarah. It has to be a lady… Grace (Oceanblue) is the one.

Sunday June 20. Grace and Chichi come to help me with the presentation and to paint the awards. We also pre-

pare some other surprises for the party. Chichi will open and close the ceremo-ny with a video.

Saturday June 26. After 2 weeks work-ing hard on the event, the day has come. I check everything with Grace in the morning, so she knows all the de-tails of the ceremony (not the winners… that I keep secret). Scripts are ready. The name of the winners in an enve-lope. Awards are painted. Time to go.

At Servus Vienna we are all sort of ner-vous. It is the first time we have had an event like that. Samba tells me how he will open the event. With a dance! He is very brave to do that in front of so many people. Afterwards, together with Grace they check their scripts, modify the text, adding some details. I need to talk to the guys who will present the dif-ferent categories. As soon as they ar-rive, I explain to them how they have to do it: when they must go on stage, their order, how to read the nominees, etc. Just some short explanations so they follow the presentation. I am nervous, but enjoying the moment.

Some guys are having a light dinner. Some guys just talking. I just want to walk and drink some juice. My mouth is dry. The party is about to start. I can’t wait to push the button.

22:20. The event starts. Chichi’s video of introduction is playing. I knock on wood.

Samba and Grace are doing great! My nerves are a little more calmed now. Irene and Mike Quinn give the first 2

awards. Then will come Ray and Le-long, who introduces a new category, the Panda award. This is a good one! Unexpected.

After that, Eagle D comes on stage for his performance. Great one. And for me, it is time to relax a little more. Things are running fine. People seem to be having fun. I am backstage, I can hardly see them, but I can hear that they are hav-ing a nice time. I hear Lucrecia’s laugh, and Emily’s funny complaints.

Eagle D finishes, and it is now time for Karl and Daisy. They do amazingly. Two more awards are given, the party goes on. It is time now for Luca and Paula. Two half-Spanish members on stage. Grace gets her award for best events or-ganizer, and Nerina as best newcomer. Nerina is really glad to get it, she feels really honored. Then comes my favorite part, a joke we made with Luca about how to become a superstar member in Shanghai Stuff. I can hear people laugh-ing, and that really pleases me.

The rest of the awards are waiting. Tina and Grace Ji make a funny presenta-tion for best party girl and party boy. These girls are great. Excelsis, who just accepted to accompany Meg to give the Bad Girl and Bad Boy awards (Da-vid was sick and could not attend) is doing superbly. Emily gets pissed off to get the Bad Girl award and threat-ens the audience. This proves people chose wisely. Then MeG performs a couple of songs. She wasn’t feeling well and I was afraid she would cancel her performance, but she is a great art-

ist, and makes all the audience enjoy her singing. The Red Beat and MeG on the stage come to my mind. I miss that place.

Now comes the official bad couple in Shanghai Stuff. With the Star Wars Im-perial March playing, Emily and K come to the stage. They make us laugh out loud with their comments. The best comes when Emily congratulates Daisy as the hottest girl, and K does the same to Luca as the hottest guy. And by that, I mean a kiss.

Last two awards. The event is coming to its end. Lucrecia and Judee come to stage. Girl of the year, and guy of the year. The last two figures, painted in pure fake gold are given. The party is over. Over? No! Chichi has something to say. We play the video we prepared. Chichi feels like he’s in hell for not at-tending the ceremony, but he invites everyone to meet him in heaven, at the next party: 10th of July, Hell & Heaven.

Every week, after a long day of hard work plot ting or tip-tapping away at my key board inter act ing with the lot of you on this an-gle or that, I take the ele va tor down stairs and jump onto a bus to go pick up my girl friend from work to have din ner together.

Before I moved back to the Puxi side of Shang hai, I used to live right next to a metro sta tion and the sub way was the char iot of choice for get ting any where beyond walk ing dis tance. Since then, hav ing moved to a place where the near-est sta tion is a good 15-20 minute walk away, I’ve become far more reliant on Shanghai’s pub lic bus sys tem. The metro is fairly easy to fig ure out and nav i gate but buses are decid edly less so, what with all the routes, lines, and num bers that criss-cross and zig-zag every which way through out the city.

There are tools, espe cially online, to help nav i gate it all so you can always find a bus or a series of buses to get exactly where you need to go. Nonethe less, it is still daunt ing to think you have to fig ure out which bus will take you from here to there, where you need to get off or may-be trans fer, and then what if you need to go from where to where that isn’t here to there? It can be a bit over whelm ing at first, even if you end up being per fectly famil iar with the few routes you reg u larly take. Every bus line I’m forced to fig ure out is one more fal lacy or cog ni tive bias pushed out of my lim ited 20  MB hard drive of a brain.

Despite not being next to a major sub-way stop, where I cur rently live quickly turned out to be an excep tion ally con-ve nient place not only for what shop ping was nearby but also for the num ber of

bus lines that either start or run by the hand ful of stops just out side the door. I even have a ded i cated bus line to the Shang hai World Expo. I’m seem ingly al-ways one bus ride away from any major dis trict in Puxi, never requir ing a trans fer, and the buses all come within min utes of each other so I rarely have to wait long. Going to Huai Hai Road near Xin tiandi to pick up my wench is a cinch.

Buses, like any pub lic trans porta tion in a densely pop u lated metrop o lis is a great place to observe a part of the daily life of the city’s denizens. You cer tainly meet all sorts of peo ple, and inter est ing things occa sion ally hap pen if you keep your eyes and ears open. They don’t have to be big things, momen tous things, news-worthy things that change the bal ance of inter na tional rela tions. They can be seem ingly banal things that just might give you a new wrin kle of appre ci a tion for the shim mer ing prism that is the liv-ing world.

I want to share two of those seem ingly banal things today.

The Com mu nist Party’s MoneyCrap. Open ing my wal let, I real ized I didn’t have my trans porta tion card, that nifty lit-tle device that would let me sim ply swipe it to pay my bus fare with out hav ing to lug around 2 kuai to deposit each time. My

girl friend had stolen it when she ran out of money on her’s and I for got. Reach ing into my pocket, I didn’t hap pen to have exact change either and I couldn’t run to a con ve nience store to buy some thing to get change. The bus was stopped, this being a ter mi nal sta tion where it departs at reg u lar inter vals, but it was about to leave soon and I didn’t have time to make a detour to suss out some coins with out being late.

I got on the bus, with the dri ver out-side fin ish ing up his break get ting ready to jump on, fire up the engines and go. I looked to the hand ful of pas sen gers al-ready on board and wait ing, smiled my toothy “heh heh, I need some help” grin and sheep ishly inquired as to whether any one had any change for the 10 kuai bill I had. Despite a few wary glances to-ward my direc tion and some brief head shak ing, the only response I got was a lit tle school boy loudly com men tat ing to another school girl class mate that I need-ed change, and gig gling. Hm.

Frak. Now what? The dri ver and the secu rity escort

boarded, ready to take the bus on its route. I sheep ishly stuck out my grubby fist with the 10 kuai bill and asked the dri-ver if they had any change apolo get i cally explain ing how my girl friend had taken my card and I didn’t have exact fare. The dri ver, with out look ing at me, directed me to just take a seat. The secu rity escort asked me to take a seat and not move around, cau tion ing me that it’ll be unlike-ly that I can get change from the pas-sen gers who would board at later stops since most peo ple these days all just

swipe their trans porta tion cards. As the bus pulled out onto the street,

with me sit ting as close to the bus’s front entrance right behind the secu rity escort, a bit embar rassed but thank ful of still be-ing allowed on board to get where I need-ed to go, the dri ver loudly commented.

“Don’t be embar rassed, it’s only the Com mu nist Party’s money.”

And then he chuckled.

Unrea son able Old Shang hainese WomenIt was another day and another time, and here I was rid ing the same bus line after hav ing din ner with my lady but only in the oppo site direc tion towards home. Quite coin ci den tally, the dri ver was the same bespec ta cled, slightly more fash ion ably dressed (than the aver age bus-driver) dri-ver who had let me ulti mately get a free ride the pre vi ous time. I pointed that out to my girl as if he was a rock star.

The buses on this route are a mix of the nor mal diesel engines and the elec-tric motor types that rely on being teth-ered to elec tri cal wires that are sus-pended above some of the streets in Shang hai. This time, I was on one of the elec tric buses. Some of them are quite nice being that they oper ate fairly qui etly, espe cially when stopped at a light, but oth ers are noto ri ous for being a cacoph-ony or switches and clicks. Turn ing off of Nan jing West Road and pulling on down the side street, the bus sud denly jolted, lost power, and came to a stop. An alarm beeped loudly as the dri ver calmly walked off the bus toward the back and the rid-

ers looked around in confusion. As we largely guessed, the elec tric

tether, lasso, or whatever-it’s-called had got ten dis con nected from the sus pended elec tri cal cables above the street, thus ren der ing the bus with out its main source of power and thus propul sion. This hap-pens every so often and usu ally the dri-ver just needs to hook the tether back on for the bus to get back on its merry way. With all of us still in the bus, the dri ver got back on and lugged the bus on its reserve bat ter ies to the side of the road, opened the doors, and then went back outside.

Unsure what was hap pen ing, since he didn’t say any thing, but sens ing that this was a cue for us to dis em bark, we slowly got off. I walked towards the back and saw that one of the two “heads” had fallen off of the tether, thereby mak ing it impos si ble to close the cir cuit, which prob a bly meant we were dead in the wa-ter. I asked the dri ver what hap pens now and he indi cated that we’d have to wait for the next bus to come and pick us up. Sounds about right.

Except it wasn’t for two older women who pro ceeded to loudly com plain at the dri ver in Shang hainese. I didn’t under-stand what they were com plain ing about but it was amus ing watch ing the driver’s reac tion. He largely ignored them, remain-ing pretty calm and cool, but of the two responses and retorts he had indulged them with, there was this hilar i ous “what-the-f*ck-are-you-going-on-about” look in his “oh-my-god-are-you-serious” eyes.

The next bus came, we all climbed on, and went on our way. What was the old lady grip ing about?

This guest article was written by Kai Pan from china/divide, a group blog featuring social and political commentary relating to modern China. Check out china/divide at chinadivide.com.

She was com plain ing that the dri ver should’ve let every one off at the pre vi ous bus stop if this was going to happen.

Yeah, your guess is as good as mine. Some peo ple, right?

As our new bus fer ried us away pass-ing by our orig i nal busted bus hazard-blinking alone on the side of the road with its dri ver, wait ing for repairs or a tow, we noticed a poor soul who had fallen asleep and was still slum ber ing away in-side. Well, that person’s not going to get home any time soon.

Every day is an adven ture. Sur prises at every cor ner. Keep your eyes and ears open. Enjoy the ever-colorful and ever-eventful world for what it is. ✖

I have to Go“Am I doing the right thing?” I ask myself, looking down

miserably at my feet as I walk away on that shameful day.

Part of me was telling myself to explain the real reason for my decision to end it all right there and then. Another part of me was much less

sympathetic, almost heartless. “Just go. Leave her. You don’t want her to see you suffer, do you?”

I don’t know what to do. Do I tell her the truth and watch her suffer while I slowly die? Or do I walk away now save

her the hurt from losing me to this wretched Illness?

“It’s not you, it’s me.” The cliché just doesn’t fit this situation. It’s far from being the right thing to say to the person who loves you, who gave you their all and never did anything wrong or hurtful. I gave you my all too but I know for a fact I really

can’t bear to see any tears in your eyes.

I try to convince myself that knowing you is the best thing that has ever happened to me. Walking away now is only for the best. It’s the only choice

for me. I have no intentions of hurting you. Remembering all we’ve been through, this decision

hurts me more than you could ever imagine.

I will never forget you.

I’m so, so sorry, but I have to go now.

Too LateI tried to warn them, but they did not listen. They did

not keep an open mind. I knew this would happen.

I told them the clues were everywhere. It’s happening right under their noses, but they never listen, they keep on

doing the same old things over and over and over again.

Why? I keep asking myself why this has to happen now? In our time?

I was stupid to think that I could change them. They are too busy with work, with play and with all the stupid things they have around them that they think makes them happy.

I did warn them again and again, but now it’s already too late.

Ladies Living It Up in Shanghaiby Anna Watson

Being a woman in Shanghai has many advantages, includ-ing being able to go to a bar every night to drink for free. So, ladies, get your summer dress-es out and go and explore your lucky world of free drinking. Here are just a few. There are plenty more out there.

MondaysGet your passport out and venture over to ‘the other side’ to The Office on Pudong Avenue for free cockails, house wine and sparkling wine between 8 pm and 2 am.

TuesdaysVisit I Love Shanghai lounge for some cheap ladies’ drinks. A small and cosy bar not far from Jing’an Temple.

WednesdaysGet groovy and listen to some jazz while sipping free champagne at Brown Sugar in Xintiandi. Just be careful at the end of the free flow when all the ladies are a bit tipsy and begging the bartenders for more, using their sultry looks and baring

their busts. Or, you can opt for free flow champagne at the Shanghai World Financial Center, while gazing at the amaz-ing views.

ThursdaysGo to Casanova in the French Concession for free bubbly all night long, a nice Italian restaurant set in a refurbished colonial build-ing overlooking a private garden.

FridaysThe Long Bar at the Portman Ritz, in the Shanghai Center, Jing’an, offers free flow Caipirinhas for all the ladies. You can also head to The Spot on Tongren Lu for fruity cocktails for free from 10 pm.

So ladies, drag along your (not so fortunate) boyfriends or husbands for a bit of fun. By the time the weekend comes around, you will definitely need the time off to recover. I might just see you there. ✖
