June Gibbard, Nelson

“No, nothing really; I had a bit of a fall, yes, but nothing more than that.”

Peter Woods, Atawhai

“Yes, there was snow on the Lewis Pass just yesterday and it was minus two at Maruia Springs at midday. It was very cold, but it was just beautiful.”

Cheryl DeLange, Stoke

“I’m up at five, so I’m up before the frost has a chance to settle. It’s cold at that time but I dress warmly.”

Viesturs Altments, Stoke

“I noticed a lot of ice on the street this morning; I’ve been driving really carefully because it would be easy to have a skid-out. Quite tricky driving.”

With winter settling in we asked Nelsonians whether they’ve been affected yet by the

frost, cold, or ice on the roads.

Nelson is on track to have its bid for national league foot-ball granted. Two representatives from New Zealand Football were in town on Friday, looking over facilities and meeting with members of the consortium that has put the bid together.Final word should come within a fortnight and if granted means Nelson could be playing national league football this coming summer. It is understood several top New Zealand coaches are in discussions with the consortium about the new team.News of the bid was first reported by Nelson Weekly in April.Head of the Top of the South consortium which applied for the licence, Aldo Miccio, confirmed the visit by the NZF representatives but would not comment further. He says though that he is positive about the feed-back from New Zealand Football.

“We are very positive, we’ve had very good discussions with them and they are impressed with what we have done and what we propose to do but we are never totally confi-dent that we will get the bid.”Concern around funding still exists in the wider football community but Aldo says the group has already half of the

sponsorship target pledged, without applying for gaming machine money or funds from current supporters of Nelson club sides. He says if the bid is confirmed they will be looking for more spon-sors.If granted a licence to play in the ASB Premier-ship, the Nelson senior team and under 20 team would play its home games at Trafalgar Park and give more profile to the region, says Aldo.“At the moment we have two national sports teams, the Tasman Makos and the Nelson Giants. A third would put us on the national stage again and will

also give our kids the opportunity to play at the highest level here in their home town.”The ASB Premiership is currently an eight team league.

“She was really upset. It was horrible.”Police told Tash the driver of the van had been at the pub, where he admitted having a jug of beer. He didn’t stop after the accident and returned 40 min-utes later where he saw police, pulled over and admitted hit-ting the girl. He was breatha-lysed but was under the limit. Tash says the driver told po-lice he thought the whack was kids throwing something at his van and he pulled over later

because he saw the police and thought they may have been investigating what had been thrown.Tash says she was told on Sun-day by police that no charges would be laid. “I was so angry, the officer just said ‘nope, nothing we can do’. I can’t believe it.”She says her daughter is also angry, unable to play football for the rest of the season and without a cell phone after it was smashed in the crash. She would like to see the driver lose his licence.

“My daughter can’t walk at the moment and she could have permanent damage and he doesn’t even get a slap on the wrist,” says Tash.Tash’s brother Clayton says he was shocked when his sister told him there would be no charges laid and posted his frustration on Facebook. That comment attracted more than 100 comments and 1000 “likes” within hours. Inspector Greally says he will get in touch with the Weekly as soon as he has spoken with his staff.

The NewHub is looking for a new hub for the city’s youth after it decided last week to leave its current building due to earthquake risk.It was announced last month that the NewHub had closed its doors for youth recreation after the Nelson City Coun-cil-owned building it operated from was deemed an earthquake risk. A building is deemed to be an earth-quake-prone building if its resistance to an earthquake is less than 33 per cent of the standard of an equivalent new building. The report gives the NewHub building a preliminary rating of 5.5 per cent. But the while “sad” the news is far from doom and gloom with some pro-grammes already relocated and “excit-ing” plans for the future. The NewHub is run by the Youth and Community Facility Trust, which says it is still passionate about continuing its services. And the centre will be run-ning its school holiday programme at Unite Church Hall on Rutherford St this school holidays. The school holiday programme caters to 11 to 18 year olds and will be held for both weeks of the school holidays from 11am to 4pm Monday through Friday.New Hub Manager, Stephen Stiles, says the trust has met with the Nelson City Council to discuss whether to continue delivering its services from the building and as a result of this meeting it has de-cided not to continue there.

Stephen says the trust has decided to look at other locations and models of service to continue to provide youth services in Nelson but is delighted that the Unite Church has been able to help with a site for the school holidays.“For us it is safety first,” he says. “It is heart-breaking to close the doors on all of the amazing resources we have for young people but we will be using the

next while to bounce back with even better opportunities for them. We hope that the community will rally around us and support us as we go through that process.”The Youth Transition Service, which was also housed in the building, will continue off-site and youth work-ers may be contacted by their normal phone numbers and email addresses.

EArThqUAkE bUilDingS cloSED: Riv-erside Pool is open for business, despite its frontage being deemed an earthquake risk. Nelson City Council announced last week that it would close all of its buildings catego-rised as earthquake prone, which includes the State Advances Building, Mediterranean Foods and the frontage of Riverside Pool. The Riverside Pool facility is not earthquake prone and an alternative entrance has been arranged.

cYclE briDgE opEning: Hundreds of cyclists are expected to converge on the new Brightwater Cycle Way bridge for its dedica-tion ceremony this Sunday. The ceremony at 1pm will be followed by a “Country Fare” and Sunday lunch at the Brightwater Do-main where bouncy castles, food vendors and local vineyard reps will be set up, in keeping with the ethos of the “Great Taste” trail. Everyone is invited to attend, on a bike or not, the milestone opening which is part of the Great Taste Trail.

commUniTY fUnDing: Applications are now open for Nelson City Council’s community assistance funding. This year the funding available for community assis-tance contracts and one-off grants will be $120,100. Community assistance funding is for not-for-profit community organisations that provide services that help the council to achieve community outcomes. Applications are invited until 4pm Tuesday July 31.

A piece of high tech cutting equipment donated to a Nelson rescue trust has saved its first life.Last year Nelson senior firefighter Dick Lyall es-tablished the Top of the South Rescue Trust to provide equipment for the Nelson Fire Brigade’s rapid response team, which flies with the Sum-mit Rescue Helicopter, if needed. On Wednesday last week, two senior Nelson firefighters used the equipment to cut out two men involved in a crash on State Highway 6, near Havelock. While one man died at Wellington Hospital, the other is currently stable and Dick says if he makes it then the equipment just paid for itself.“That is the first time it’s been used for real and

the guys say the gear was brilliant. Compared with the other stuff it’s streaks ahead.”The equipment was bought with donations from members of the public and a big donation from the Nelson Freemasons. It includes hydraulic cutting equipment and al-lows firefighters to cut people from their cars rapidly. “It’s the latest gear in the cutting field and it’s the first of its kind in the country,” says Dick. “This is the first of the fly in a box concept and the rapid response team is a leader in the country.”The gear weighs 83kg in its carbon fibre box and is worth around $32,000. “But hey, it saved a life last week, that’s what it’s for,” says Dick.

Nayland College students celebrated the end of term in the muddiest way possible.Nayland College held its first ever Winter Festival on Friday afternoon, following the creation of its inaugu-ral house system at the start of 2012. Amongst the fun activities to sign off the term in style was a mud run, quiz and a rave. The mud run was the most popular with hundreds of students taking part. The mud run saw competitors run through chilly, dirty creeks, and battle a fire hose on the way up a slippery tarpaulin. Students were able to gain house points for participation.A couple of teachers also braved the muddy challenge in support of their allocated house.Nayland College was the final school in Nelson to cre-ate a house system. Students are able to obtain points for school-wide events like swimming sports, talent quests, and athlet-ics day amongst others.

Top of the line security cameras have been in-stalled around the Waimea Sales Yard hoping to put an end to animal thievery.

Nelson Police have been fielding reports of sto-len stock during the night when the animals are left unattended, prior to being picked up

for delivery.Local stock agent Richard Eddington hopes the infrared cameras, which will be able to spot any movements during the night or day and break them down frame by frame, will keep the sales yard free from rustlers.Richard cited the rising price of lamb and mutton as the main reason be-hind the thievery but says the prob-lem has been occurring “all over the region” for a number of years.“There is rustling happening all over the district. They’re darned thieves and we want to make sure it doesn’t happen at the sales yards again,” says Richard. “Anybody coming into the sales yard is being watched.”Local farmers bring their stock to the sales yard on a Tuesday night. They drop them off and give an agent a call ready for them to be picked up the following morning. There have been numerous cases reported – the latest was when four two-tooth ewes were slaughtered behind the pig pens. Two-tooth ewes from the same farm usually go for $220. Lambs in small numbers have also been stolen during the night. “They all add up and that’s the reason why we’ve got these security cameras. These are top of the line.”

Museum milestone with 50,000th image

PLATE 50,000: Errol Shaw holds the 50,000th glass plate to be digitised and relocated as part of the Nelson Provincial Museum’s Glass Plate Nega-tive Project. Pictured with Errol are fellow project team members from left, Ian McGuire, Megan Wells and Anne McEwan. The plate, referenced 22588, is of a Miss Aldridge and is part of the Tyree Studio Collection.

The Nelson Provincial Museum is a third of the way through its Glass Plate Project, processing its 50,000th image last Thursday. In total the collection has around 150,000 glass plate negatives with more than 20,000 images from the plates now on-line.Museum chief executive Peter Mill-ward hailed the progress as a huge achievement. “We still need more donations to make sure the project can be com-

pleted after a major donation and a grant from the NZ Lottery Grants Board kicked us off. “The project is a credit to the whole staff because they are all involved in setting up the workspace, fitting out the darkroom with more storage cabinets, naming attaching and stor-ing the files and then verifying the records,” he says. Two images from the collection run in the Nelson Weekly and Waimea Weekly each week.

Founded in 1996 by the McKeown family, Trends Kitchens takes pride in bringing quality kitchens and joinery to South Island homes. Unlike franchise owned companies with a limited product range, Trends Kitchens can provide you a custom made kitchen produced by our own certified tradesmen, in our own factory.

As the demand for this style of designer kitchen service spread around the South Island, so have Trends Kitchens showrooms and branches. Not long after we opened a branch in Nelson, we found people were coming all the way from Blenheim to see us. We were happy to create a site to accommodate our Blenheim clients, and our Renwick showroom was born.

Today, you can walk into a Trends Kitchens show- room in Nelson, Blenheim, Cromwell or Christchurch, and meet with a local designer who can offer you a free measure and quote for the perfect kitchen to accompany your new home or renovation.

When you confirm your purchase with Trends Kitchens, you’re eligible for a no obligation interior design consultation from the team at ColourPlus, to compliment your new kitchen.

Ask our friendly staff for details.

This week Nelson Weekly and Waimea Weekly launched its new website, giving readers easier access to news content online and breaking news throughout the week. The website – www.nelsonweekly.co.nz – allows readers to check out the latest stories, comment on articles and share their favourite photos or sto-ries on Facebook. It also has a photo gallery, advertising details and retains its popular function to read the whole newspaper online each week, a feature used around 1200 times each week on its old website. The site will also allow the Weeklys to post break-ing news throughout the week, instead of waiting for each Tuesday.

Chief executive of the newspapers, Steve Page, says the website is another positive step for the locally-owned newspaper group. “The new site complements the paper and will give readers more of an opportunity to get in-volved with their local paper be it through com-ments or keeping up to date with the latest news throughout the week.“This is just more good news for the newspapers after our recent growth.”Advertising spaces on the site have also been quickly snapped up with only a couple of spots re-maining. “It’s an exciting development for us and we look forward to hearing what people think of it,” says Steve.

Dave Duncan, Harbour Master/Marine Operations Manager.

diaryThe Harbour Master’s

• Four container ships, 3 log ships moved through the port, 2 fruit ships, 20 large fish-ing vessel movements around the port, and a survey vessel to the slip kept the marine team and the stevedores very busy last week.• Did you know that the Harbour Master’s jurisdiction extended up all rivers within the region? Whilst we don’t actively police these areas we support DOC and vice versa in this regard. With the whitebait season starting in a month’s time I just thought I would bring a few things to your attention.• Watch out for the change in weather. Hypo-thermia is a big killer when people in or near the water get cold. Once you are cold rational decision making goes out the window. Watch out for the change in tide. Beware of rainfall or melting snow. Depths can change consid-erably in the space of a few hours. Rivers and tides can behave differently as the tide goes in or out. Unexpected eddies can form and catch out the unwary wader or fisherman. Speaking of waders, do you wear sea boots or thigh-waders? If you do, do you wear a life jacket with them.• People can fall in the water, whether wading whilst whitebaiting , motoring or sailing. Can you imagine the excruciating horror of being just a few metres from the shore, sucked into deeper water by the running river and not being able to swim to the surface due to the weight in your boots or waders?• Do not kid yourself that you will be able to take them off. It has happened in the past and will probably happen again. Make sure it’s not you. If you wore a simple inflatable life jacket that sits lightly over your shoulders like a harness, the extra buoyancy in such an event would save your life.

Wedding fever is hitting the region with the countdown to the Bride of the Year show now into the final fortnight. The show is a fundraiser for the Nelson Regional

Hospice Trust and it got an early start this year with supporter Paula Holder, of Paula’s Pre-school, dressing as a bride and selling raffle tick-ets at the Saturday market. Organiser Heather

Harley, says it was fantastic to have Paula working the mar-ket and helping raise aware-ness about the show. “Amazing support, this year’s show will be amazing because of all the people who come along to be a part of it and help make it what it is.”The Bride of the Year Show is being held at the Hope Com-munity Church on Saturday July 14 from 7.45pm and Heather says she is still ac-cepting last minute brides who would like to get that dress back on for one more pub-lic showing. It is open for all brides married from June 16 2011 until the same date 2012. The show will feature the judg-ing for the bride of the year competition, giveaways, a va-riety concert, dancing exhibi-tion and a fantastic silent auc-tion. Heather says it will be a great night out. “It’s so much fun with heaps going on, you will never get bored and it’s al-ways a great crowd of people. I encourage everyone to come along and enjoy themselves.”For more details or to enter email [email protected].

Sixty-two years of pen friendshipAs an eight year old student Florence Gunn was given a letter from her teacher, written by a 7 year old girl in Scotland. She was told to write back. Sixty two years on she is still writing.Last Friday marked the anniversary of when her pen pal in Scotland, Helen Connell, wrote that first letter. It described who she was, her teach-er's name and how long they had just had for school holidays. The letter arrived at Florence’s Runanga Prima-ry School near Greymouth amongst a box full of other letters from her school teacher Charlie Barton. He had just arrived home from a holiday to his Scottish homeland where he took a box of New Zealand apples to his old school. In return he asked the students to write a letter to their new pen pals on the West Coast. One of those students was Helen Connell and the letter she wrote sparked a lifelong friendship.Florence, who lives in Stoke, says she can’t re-member receiving the first letter but reading them brings back plenty of memories. From the first letters, the subjects changed to movies, mu-sic and holidays and then boyfriends and hus-bands. She says her pen pal was someone she could confide in. “We shared very intimate de-tails about each other’s life, the hard times and the good times. We always had someone to con-fide in and we could share those very comfort-ably.”The pen pals even followed a similar path into

the workforce. While Florence did wages for a milk treatment plant on the West Coast, Helen was doing wages for a margarine factory in Scot-land.Despite the letters becoming sparser in adult-hood, the pair would always send birthday cards, Christmas presents and every single year, a calendar. Then in 1998 Florence decided to visit Helen and flew to Scotland. She says she remembers thinking “it will either cement our friendship or we will part".But as Florence made her way down the stairs at Glasgow airport she knew they would be more than just pen pals. “The minute we met at the bottom of the stairway at Glasgow airport there was a total connection. We sat and talked un-til midnight. Since then we’ve really got a close bond.”Florence has been back another two times and is hoping for a fourth in a few years’ time. Helen hasn’t visited New Zealand be-cause of a fear of flying says Flor-ence. “I’ve forgiven her for that,” she joked. These days the letters come in the form of an email but still start and end the way they did in the 1950s: “Started with the weather and end-ed with ‘we’re well and hope you and your family are all well too’.”

Several dozen stargazers attended the Star Par-ty at Clifton Terrace School on Friday evening,

with perfect conditions allowing for great views of the moon, Saturn, Mars and other astronomi-cal wonders. The event was set up by the Astronomy Section

of the Nelson Science Society, with the Atkinson Observa-tory at Clifton Terrace School being used alongside other powerful telescopes. This Thursday the club will be hosting its first ever quiz night, featuring astronomical-themed Trivial Pursuit. The event is open to the public, from 7.30pm in the Cawthron Institute seminar room.“It should be a fun night, and you will probably learn something as well,” says Ash-ley Marles, who will MC the event as well as showing some photos of the recent transit of Venus. The Star Parties are hosted each moon cycle on Fridays at the nearest first quarter moon, weather permitting. The event always proves pop-ular for families with chil-dren, says Ashley, with many turning up earlier than the scheduled 7pm start. The next Star Party will be held at the observatory on July 27.

Graeme Wallace certainly knows how to draw a crowd. The Atawhai resident’s 2009 Chevrolet Corvette z06 was just one of the many American muscle cars on display during the Nelson City Rod & Custom Club’s Independence Day Cruise but it was easily the most talked about.Graeme personally handpicked the limited edi-tion car from the United States. It is one of 7000 made in 2009.It has a 7L engine, 700 horse power and an alu-

minium chassis. The Corvette can reach speeds of up 350kph and does 0-100kph in just 3.6 sec-onds. Graeme has not used the Corvette to its full po-tential and he was content with keeping to the speed limits along with the hot rods. The cruise took drivers from the Nelson Subur-ban Club through to Kaiteriteri beach and back through the Moutere Valley. All money raised from the cruise went towards St John Ambulance.

Harley’s Pharmacy is Tahuna’s old school pharmacy with new school knowledge. The small, friendly team provides familiar faces and a wealth of knowledge. Andrew and Violet Harley have recently taken over the business from Andrew’s father Nick Harley, who has built up a great reputation as an honest, approachable pharmacist over his time at the store. Formerly Tahuna Pharmacy, Nick ran the business for almost four decades, making a name for himself in the community for his friendly, personable customer service. Andrew and Violet intend to continue this legacy, rebranding the business as Harley’s Pharmacy

to reflect the family and community orientated nature of the pharmacy. To celebrate the opening of the store as Harley’s Pharmacy, there will be raffles and giveaways throughout July, so come in to see the new look store with the same friendly staff and you could walk away with some exciting prizes. The exclusive and experienced team of eight is highly knowledgeable and they’re more than happy to give you advice if you’ve got any health issues or questions about your medications. From a cold or sore throat, to dry skin or sunburn, they’ve got the perfect remedy and can direct you to a product that will get you on the mend.

Harley’s Pharmacy is family run. Andrew and Violet, both pharmacists, own the business. Andrew’s sister, Alison Harley along with Jessica Barton, the newest member of the team, work at the shop counter, providing good, old fashioned kiwi service with a smile. Anne Millar, pharmacist, along with Kerry Todd, Carol Nevin and Sue Cook, the resident dispensary technicians complete the dispensary team. Each team member has a wealth of experience, with a great general knowledge of the products as well as each specialising in a different area so that the right knowledge is always at hand. Friendly and approachable, the staff members take the time getting to know customers and their medical history so that the professional advice they offer can be tailored over time to suit your personal needs. “We get to know our regulars’ history and their lifestyle; a lot of people have been coming here for years and years,” says Violet.Harley’s Pharmacy offers everything from off the shelf medication, vitamins and herbal remedies and first aid supplies to cosmetics, sun protection and gifts. The new owners have recently brought in a few new product ranges to add to their already impressive selection. They stock the Natio range of cosmetics and are bringing in the vibrant options of the Coral Colours cosmetics range and have begun stocking Sukin, a carbon neutral skincare range, which provides natural, organic skincare at a reasonable price. They have also brought in a range of merino wool accessories and baby clothing made locally by Hayley Richards. Just a stroll from Tahuna beach, it’s easy to duck in if you’ve forgotten sunscreen or a hat. Being a beach pharmacy gives them the freedom to stock a broad range of retail products and find a balance between medicinal and lifestyle. The store is open and spacious, with an airy feel created by windows that let in all day sun and face Tahuna beach. The gift range section includes a broad range of products made in New Zealand including puzzles, books, baby booties and hair clips, with different products

stocked all the time to ensure a rotation of their quality selection, and there’s always something new to find. Items are available to suit all ages and price ranges, from knickknacks to necessities, making great gift ideas.Ear piercing is available in the pharmacy, with a separate room within the store offering privacy. A selection of sterile earrings are available, as well as antiseptic sprays, and all necessary precautions are taken to ensure you can trust the

branding that is reminiscent of old apothecaries, with a mortar and pestle to demonstrate bringing the business back to the old school elements while incorporating modern knowledge and advances. “Ultimately what I want to do is have that really old school look, lots of wood, vials of things, mortars and pestles; we’re going for that look in the next few years,” says Violet.

They have already brought in some of that feeling with their logos, depicting the mortar and pestle and Harleys, incorporating the Rx symbol into the text. The Rx in the logo is inspired by the symbol used in historic literature to refer to apothecaries’ old recipes. This logo has been emblazoned on the new vibrant orange and red signs on the shop front, located on Tahunanui Drive, opposite the KFC. Off road parking is available, with seven spaces next to the store. The changeover has been very exciting for all involved, and the transition was documented on their Facebook page, with photos and thanks going out to all who helped and supported the new

owners and the team. Come in to Harley’s Pharmacy and meet the new owners and the familiar team and see the great changes happening at your local, family owned pharmacy.

With Science Fair season almost upon us, Cawthron has created a new tool to help students, parents and teachers interested in science and technology. The Cawthron Science and Tech-nology Fair website is launched today and is an Aladdin's Cave of helpful hints and tips not to men-tion essential entry forms, weekly updates and rules. The Nelson schools’ science fair has been running for over 25 years and is a labour of love for the Cawthron Trust Board. Judene Edgar, secre-tary of the board, says “it is a mam-moth task with hundreds of entries each year, but such a rewarding event as the projects just get better and better”. For the past ten years Des Duthie led the fair, however this year he has passed the reins to the Caw-thron Trust Board as the primary sponsor of the event. There is more incentive than ever to enter as the prizes and awards have far ex-ceeded previous years, with almost twenty businesses and organisa-

tions throughout the region now involved as sponsors. The awards range from an all-expenses paid placement at the week-long ‘Hands on Science’ event at the University of Otago, to hundreds of dollars in prize money. Dedicated to the annual Cawthron Science and Technology Fair, the new website provides essential in-formation for parents, students and teachers leading up to the event, in addition to the various photo gal-leries for during and after the fair. Maps, ethics forms, criteria for spe-cial awards and posters are all avail-able at www.cawthronsciencefair.org.nzThe Cawthron Science and Tech-nology Fair is located at the Ernest Rutherford Retirement Village from Wednesday 19 to Saturday 22 September. The judging will take place on Wednesday 19th and from Thurs-day – Saturday projects will be available for public viewing. An awards event is planned for Wednesday September 26.

Paul Shutte has voluntarily built homes in Nepal and Cambodia – now he’s ready to do it all again.Paul is one of the many Nelson resi-dents already signed on for Habitat for Humanities’ Ever Build II. Ever-est Build 2012 will focus on com-pleting at least 40 houses in one week for residents of Ne-pal who are without work or income. Habitat NZ has a goal of enlisting the services of vol-unteers from New Zealand who want to make a differ-ence, and experi-ence a transfor-mational overseas trip at the same time. Ten teams of 15 volunteers each will make up the total of 150 and each team will have an appointed team leader. An “Everest Build” house has two bedrooms, a liv-ing room, kitchen and an exterior toilet. Volunteers and home partners will be constructing houses made of sun dried brick, treated bamboo with galvanized, corrugated-metal roofs and/or bamboo corrugated roofing sheets and stone. Initially, Paul had to be convinced to sign up for the project. But after

his first hand experience of the im-pact his work can have on an entire family’s life, he was quick to sign up for what will now be his third trip with Habitat NZ. “It’s a week of my time and it costs a few thousand dollars, but that

changes a family’s life and that’s a big thing for me,” he says. “In Cambo-dia, everyone that we were building houses for was liv-ing on a tip. Now they’ve got a brick box, but to them it’s a mansion.”The work is not technical so any-one is open to ap-ply. “If you can follow simple in-structions then it’s pretty sweet.”Because all of the volunteers are pay-ing to get to Nepal, Habitat NZ offers extra holiday jour-neys to follow the week-long build. “Last time we spent a week trekking in the mountains and that’s probably

what we’ll do again this time, once the build is done.”The trip is tax deductable but is likely to cost $5000.If you are interested in signing up for the project, email Paul on [email protected]

The top musical, cultural, ar-tistic and theatrical students at Garin College took to the stage to celebrate Mahi Toi.Last month students took two days away from their regular classroom routines to make cupcakes, write songs, perform poetry and create wearable dresses out of recycled curtains and other reusable materials as part of the annual Mahi Toi Festival. Thursday night showcased the top students’ efforts as well as giving parents and friends of the school a chance to witness what the students had completed. Other cultural performanc-es from the first half of the year were also highlighted including the winning Stage Challenge performance and competitors from the recent O’Shea Shield competition and entrants from Smoke-freerockquest.The evening was hosted by head arts students Georgia Nott and Isaac Thomas and held at the Hope Commu-nity Church.Event organiser and head of music Kyle Proffit says the concert grows every year and was particularly im-pressed by the number of younger entrants for 2012. “I think the number of jun-ior students on show this year displays how things are going. We have a lot of young talent coming into the school and they’re being in-spired by the older kids. It’s great to see them involved in the showcase concerts.”

The regional leg of the Young Growers Awards was won by Jos Bell of Hoddy's Orchard, which hosted the competition. The competition saw nine contestants from Mo-tueka, Riwaka and Waimea Plains face off in as many disciplines, testing a range of skills neces-sary to be a successful grower. The tests were practical as well as theoretical, from irrigation and fencing to maturity test-ing, pest and disease and staff human resources. Many local businesses came together to sup-port the event.Last year Kevin Withington, the regional win-ner from Nelson, went on to win the overall title. This is the fourth year the competition has been run and it continues to attract more en-trants each year, with contestants saying the acknowledgement gives a real "boost" to their careers as well as the industry.Jos received $1500 and an Energies Fruit

Foundation trophy for winning the regional leg, as well as an all expenses paid trip to Hawkes Bay to see the orchard systems there. He will go on to compete in the national event, held at the Horticulture New Zealand confer-ence in Auckland later this month."The next step is to go to the national finals, so that's going to be another step up and another challenge, I'm looking forward to that and giv-ing it a go," says Jos.

Nelson College survived a second half onslaught to clinch four competition points in the first round of the Press Cup section one. Fleur Lattimore is no fun runner – well not yet anyway. That, no doubt, will come in years to come when her competitive edge dissipates. But, at the moment she is all focus, especially whenever she’s on a Nelson Events trail run start-line.On Saturday she lined up in the Haven Realty Sanctuary Run as women’s record-holder and likely candidate to again be first woman back to the finish line. She was clipping eight seconds off her last year’s time placing sixth overall, two better than in 2011.At the front was Aucklander, Kelvin Meade, also improving on his last year’s effort – by almost eleven minutes on the ‘more than honest course’ climbing Nelson’s skyline 793metres to Fringed Hill, ‘skipping’ over to Third House and culminating with a demanding circuit in the pristine Brook Waimarama Sanctuary. Nelson runners, Greig Shirley and Benjamin McDowall were second and third while the women’s equivalent, Tina Arthur (Wtgn) and Robyn Perkins (Chch) were separated by two seconds at the end.The 14km short course competitors sacrificed the chance to head skywards but still found the

terrain testing.Nigel Burgess looked the early candidate for honours but Jonathan Love (Chch) had other ideas when ‘push came to shove’ on the Sanctuary

circuit. While Burgess finished inside Gus Shirley’s 2011 record, Love let loose and was just under five minutes ahead in 1.23.40. Scott Howley, Nelson, was third. Andrea Livingston (Nelson) has never considered herself a runner but off-road in wildside territory she found her feet, finishing first woman, Ellen-Mary Pullar (Nelson) and Jessica Willis (Wtgn) following.2013’s event, at this stage will be moved to August, and Nelson Events Escape from Tane’s Forest brand will have a new location over a trail that has never had a race run on it before. Their attention for now though goes

on organising the Furneaux Lodge Captain Cook’s Landing along the Queen Charlotte Track on July 28th and September’s Abel Tasman Coastal Classic. Both have sold out, however those aspiring to be on the Classic’s start line shouldn’t give up training as mid-winter ills and injuries always result in cancellations allowing most on the waiting list the opportunity to compete.

Rainbow Ski Field currently boasts the best start to the season in a decade. With the snow depth already at 50cm, it’s the perfect time to dig your snow gear out of the cupboard and get out here to rip up the mountain. The slopes celebrated the 2012 opening on Saturday with cracker weather and a large number of people came along to enjoy the first day of the Rainbow season. The snow depth was between 20cm and 60cm, providing great coverage on all runs and slopes. This year the terrain park has been expanded, with volunteers working most weekends in the off season to repair, upgrade and extend the park. The boxes and rails have been improved, and the terrain park covers several hundred downhill metres,

giving skiers and boarders more to play with and more chances to try their skills without slowing down

between runs. There have also been improvements made on the West Bowl Tow, making it easier to use. The gradient has been reduced, and handles have been fitted. A huge amount of maintenance has been carried out on all the lifts on the fields, the goal to make sure that the lifts run absolutely reliably

and with minimum stoppages so that you get the most from your day at the mountain. It’s even easier to spend the day on the slopes this winter, with a new Rainbow Shuttle service running through Nelson, Stoke, Richmond and St Arnaud every day the ski fields are open this winter. A ticket will only cost you $45, $30 for children. Timetables are available online, where you can also book your ticket. The bus provides a great transport option, as all cars and buses need to carry chains fitted to the vehicle to gain access from the bottom car park, no matter the weather conditions, in case they are needed. Shuttle bus services run from the bottom car park, or chains can be hired, with providers listed on the Rainbow website.Family Day Passes have been added to the pass options this year after proving a popular request. Two adults and two or

more of their children or grandchildren up to 17 years-old can ski on the pass, at only $190, with extra children added for only $30.Adult passes cost $70 a day, or $49 for a half day, beginning at 12.30pm, half cost for children up to 17 years. Students from New Zealand and Australia can enjoy a day on the slopes for only $50. Children under seven can try their talents on the snow for free.Rainbow boasts leading facilities, with a café on the snow serving a great range of food, from soups and pies to sweets

Jacks Red marched to the top of the ta-ble in Grade 1 (although sitting second on goal differential) when it beat Pric-es Pharmacy Black 30-25 on Saturday.Although Jacks had its noses in front throughout the game, its players did not feel in control as Prices were always there breathing down their necks.Jacks was steady through court, more controlled and made fewer unforced errors than its counterparts. Jacks goal shoot, Moira Raumati was accu-racy personified when she turned to face the goal to put the shot up. Moira was well supported by goal at-tack, Ange Scoble who was happy to play a feeding role. The shooters received superb service from the feeders – Kirsten Powick and Ro-byn Leonard, who delivered some pre-cision ball.Prices defence toiled for the entirety, circle defenders Ebony Barrett and Carol Heiford were powerful rebound-ers and were useful in bringing the ball through from the back line. Carol read the play well and got up for some great ball.Miranda Hart-Tava made her usual solid contribution, she made good de-cisions and was a useful link through court. Goal shoot, Jess Hart slotted some great shots when needed.Prices coach, Tom Alesana said although they were down by 11 at one stage he was pleased with how his charges fought back and did not give up. Two of their players were unavailable for Sat-urday’s game, their timing was off and they did

throw away ball however their team defence did keep them in the game.Prices Black has steadily improved throughout the season and Tom is happy that they are sit-ting third on the table, which is a good place go-ing into the championship round. There is still work to do, however he believes his girls are up for the task.

A composed Stoke team turned around a heavy first round loss to Marist dishing out a 38-22 trouncing, in the senior division one competition. Stoke dominated possession and territory to orchestrate four well taken tries in the first half at the Tahunanui playing fields. Mid-fielder Chad Lowrie opened the scoring af-ter unrelenting pressure to dot down beside the posts, Ray Packer picked up a brace soon after in another emphatic display from the loose head prop. Number 8 Jarred Aberhart rounded off a productive display, taking the opportunity to dive over from a quick tap. Stoke’s forward pack lifted its performance another notch, led by tight head Mike Ty-ler who dominated the opposition, putting Stoke on the front foot especially with ball in hand. Hooker Max Glossop, lock Ben Douglas, and skipper Stu Tunnicliff all put in industrious games with a substantial defensive effort, and complementary attacking skills to match. Stoke never took their foot off the pedal heading into the second half, with another inspiring game from half back Shawn Begg. Ben early on capitalised on a Marist mistake and demonstrated some deft footwork to toe the ball around the opposition for Shawn to scoop the ball and dive over the line to score. The game swung back and forth for the next 20 minutes, with Marist now gaining their fair share of the ball. Midfielders Lowrie and Patrick Tafili-Reid repelled any at-tack with some excellent defensive work, well supported by wingers Chris Little and Matt Falloon. First five Jake Beleski directed the game well and took his opportunities on attack, while fullback Leon Guerin had another great game capping it off with a well taken try to extinguish any Marist attempt of revival. This now puts Stoke in a good position to make the play-offs, but it needs to maintain its intensity and momentum to take on Riwaka in Riwaka this Saturday.

The club's division two side wasn't so clinical in its game on Saturday, losing to a brilliant Nelson side at Green-

meadows. Stoke scored just the one try, to veteran Ant Holder, while first five Jake Curtis kicked a penalty to round out the scoring from the home side.Manager Josh O'Connor says losing many of its senior players to the division one team meant its cohesion was wayward. "But at the end of the day, Nelson was sharp and they played the game in great spirit. Full credit to them."Stoke head to Riwaka this weekend, to play the curtain raiser to its division one team, which is also playing Ri-waka. Josh says it will be a grudge match after a tough bat-tle earlier this year.

The club's women's side is preparing for sudden death

rugby this weekend as it gets set to play Marist in the semi-final of the club competition.Stoke finished second in the round robin and has not lost to Marist so far this season. The game will be played at Greenmeadows this Saturday.

The Stoke Reds continued its tough season, losing to divi-sion three front-runners Wanderers in Brightwater over the weekend.Stoke scored two tries in the 49-12 loss with Kurt Col-lier and Kerry Neame both crossing the try-line. Patrick Whakatihi kicked a conversion.Coach Adrian Boyd says it was a tough game as Stoke were low on numbers at the start of the game.

Tall Fern Jelena Vucinic is back playing for the Nelson Sparks during her college off season. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

Jelena Vucinic hasn’t been able to keep away from the basketball court during her summer holidays. The 20 year-old shooting guard had just completed her sophomore year at Louisiana Tech University where she played in front of crowds of up to 7000 people, before taking to the court for the Nelson Sparks in the first of three Women’s Basketball Championship tournaments.Jelena’s summer holidays, which ironically is during Nelson’s winter, has involved catching up with friends and family, and the challenge of steering the Sparks to national glory. Having represented New Zealand in age grade sides regularly throughout her teenage years, Jelena made her official debut for the Tall Ferns on a tour to Japan in 2010. She went on to make a handful of appearances for the team but is currently a non-travelling reserve.Jelena is studying kinesiology and health promotion at Louisiana Tech University in Ruston, Louisiana but admits juggling basketball with a degree isn’t as hard as she first thought. Jelena took to the court in 21 games during the 2011-12 season – making just two starts. She averaged 3.6 points per game, 0.9 rebounds and 0.5 assists per game. All those statistics were much higher than the previous season which saw Jelena play just 11 games in her freshman year. When she returns for her third campaign, Jelena is hoping to become more of a role player in the side that is heavily reliant on its senior members. She will head back to the US in August.

The Canterbury indoor cricket team will have a distinct Nelson flavour to it this season.Six local players, Jon Routhan, Ryan Edwards, Simon McGowan, Brendan Hodgson, Ollie O’Connor and Mason Thelin, have been handpicked for the Canterbury squad’s Action Inter-provincial Championship campaign in September. It is the highest percentage of players that Nelson has ever supplied to the indoor sport’s premier national tournament. The six players’ selection comes on the back of a successful Action South Island Championship with the Nelson Knights that saw the team run away with the title.Jon – who is a current New Zealand international, having represented the side in the past Indoor Cricket World Cup – is a major factor in the participation figures. Since returning from Auckland, Jon has been able to put more focus into the sport, leading to a number of top local cricketers crossing over for the winter. “They’ve taken to the sport like a duck to water. They’re an incredible group of guys and they’ve managed to transfer basic outdoor cricket skills into the indoor version of the game,” says Jon.National selectors will have a keen eye on new players at the tournament with the next Indoor Cricket World Cup just two years away. Jon says that international indoor cricket would be the next step for the six players and was hopeful they would impress in Christchurch come September. However, the initial step was winning the tournament for the first time. Canterbury has lost the past two championship finals.
