Oregon Country

Early on the Pacific Northwest went by the name Oregon Territory or Oregon Country

Hudson Bay Co. (British) vs. Rocky Mountain Fur Company(American) Hudson Bay did not let anyone else trap

in their territory. Although the were rivals they did help

one another in need.

How did fur trade lead to settlement?

Settlements are not good for the Fur Trade

The popularity and riches brought more settlers

Fur trappers got lost and accidentally found the Southern mountain pass.

Missionaries- What Started it all?

In 1831 four members of the Nez Perce and Flathead tribes went to St. Louis

They were interested in the white man’s religion

William Walker described the visit in a letter to a Protestant magazine.

Ended up in the Willamette Valley to stay close to the fort

Reinforcements

The Lees decided they needed more people at their mission… mainly more women!

They eventually received 52 people with different skills

They had a successful settlement of white settlers but did not reach out to the Native population.
