MOUNTAIN MEN AND MISSIONARIES
Entry Task
If you had to go and live in the woods for one year, what would you bring with you?
What do you think you would do to get food?
What kind of shelter would you have?

Early on the Pacific Northwest went by the name Oregon Territory or Oregon Country
Hudson Bay Co. (British) vs. Rocky Mountain Fur Company(American) Hudson Bay did not let anyone else trap
in their territory. Although the were rivals they did help
one another in need.

How did fur trade lead to settlement?
Settlements are not good for the Fur Trade
The popularity and riches brought more settlers
Fur trappers got lost and accidentally found the Southern mountain pass.
Missionaries- What Started it all?
In 1831 four members of the Nez Perce and Flathead tribes went to St. Louis
They were interested in the white man’s religion
William Walker described the visit in a letter to a Protestant magazine.

Jason Lee and Daniel Lee went to witness to the Natives
Ended up in the Willamette Valley to stay close to the fort
Reinforcements
The Lees decided they needed more people at their mission… mainly more women!
They eventually received 52 people with different skills
They had a successful settlement of white settlers but did not reach out to the Native population.
Jason Lee was fired
