Hello Students, Parents, Carers, local Community members and Staff,
I wish to invite you to join QParents which will give you access to many online services for your son/daughter. The information on page 8 will give you the details of what you will be able to access.
Attendance is remaining higher than it was at the same time last year, however, it is falling slightly each week and at the end of week four total school attendance was 88.4% Thank you for reading this information and I look for-ward to meeting you throughout the year.
Regards, Trevor Rickertt - Principal
Swimming Carnival Wednesday 10 February saw the first of the carnivals for this year. We had our annual swimming carnival held at the newly renovated Mount Morgan Pool. With record high participants and great sunny weath-er, all those involved throughout the day had a fan-tastic time. There was some great swimming all round from all of our students. CONGRATULA-TIONS to Gordon House for taking out the Swimming Championship for 2016. I would like to thank all the staff for their commitment on this day, the parents for coming out to support the school and our students, and to the Mount Morgan Swimming Pool staff for letting us use this great facil-ity. See photos and list of Aged Champions on pages
4,5 and 6. I look forward to our next carnival, the Cross Country Carnival, which will take place early next Term. Rugby League This year has seen a record high number of boys signing up for the new Rugby League program. With over 40 boys expressing their interest has led to a fantastic outcome for our school. A new coach and a new motto of ‘fitter, faster, stronger, better’ has seen the boys being put through their paces early on. With breakfast being provided by the school and Mount Morgan Bakery almost all 40 boys have been to eve-ry training session thus far. I would like to thank the parents for supporting our students and I do hope this can continue. If you would like your student to participate in this great opportunity or would like fur-ther information regarding Rugby League, please contact Mr Blair Drabble at [email protected] or call 4912 5555. For Your Information: Fitness training occurs Monday and Friday morning on the back oval. Wednesday 17 February was the first of many Super 9’s touch trial games to be held at the school to de-termine the skill level of the boys. Parents are welcome to come and watch on
Wednesday afternoon at the school.

Literacy Committee – Whole School Reading Focus 2016 Welcome back to what is going to be an exciting year for literacy at Mount Morgan State High School! This year our Literacy Committee (made up of teachers, Year Level Coordinators and Head of Departments) has a vision that involves YOU, the community, in helping to assist with our students’ literacy skills to improve educational outcomes within our school. Each newsletter will include a segment to keep you in the loop with what we as staff are doing around literacy in the school, what your students’ are doing and ideas of what you can do to help assist us with the whole school improvement. The Literacy Committee’s aim is to improve literacy skills (reading, writing, grammar, punctuation and spelling) across the whole school by developing re-sources and activities that engage and challenge stu-dents in all subject areas. To assist us in doing this, we conducted various testing in Week 1 of this term for all year levels to gauge where the students are in terms of their skills and abilities, and find the areas that we as a school need to improve on. These test-ings were conducted on the computer (Reading and comprehension testing) as well as in the form of a booklet (QAR – Question, Answer, Relationship read-ing technique). So watch this space every newsletter with the whole
school results of the testings as well as a more in-
depth look at the resources that are being used at
school to be discussed next newsletter!

Immunisation at School…
Through a supportive joint enterprise between Health and Education, vaccinations are available to school stu-dents during their attendance at school. This is of great convenience for parents/carers, who do not then need to find time and funds to visit a General Practice Doctor.
Children receiving prescribed immunisations are far better equipped to stay healthy themselves, as well as protect others who come in contact with them.
For 2016, students in both Year 7 and Year 8 will receive Gardasil (protects against human papillomavirus), Varil-rix (protects against chickenpox), and Boostirix (protects against diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (whooping cough)).
Protection against these diseases is vitally important for several reasons.
Human papillomavirus, or HPV, is a common virus affecting both males and females. People who are infected may have no symptoms, but can still pass on the infection to others.
Chickenpox (varicella) is a highly contagious infection, and can be severe in adults, sometimes causing serious or even fatal complications. One in 5,000 people who catch chickenpox will develop a brain inflammation called
encephalitis, and three in 100,000 will die.
Key points to remember:-
Chickenpox is very easy to catch.
Chickenpox can be a fatal illness for people who have immune problems, for example those with a chronic medical condition such as HIV/AIDS or those undergoing treatment for severe asthma or cancer.
If a pregnant woman gets chickenpox during the first half of her pregnancy, there is a risk of malfor-mations (birth defects) in the baby.
Antibiotics will not cure chickenpox. Chickenpox is a virus and it cannot be treated with antibiotics.
Diphtheria is a serious communicable bacterial disease that causes severe inflammation of the nose, throat and windpipe (trachea). An abnormal membrane grows in the throat, which can lead to suffocation. Other complica-tions include paralysis and heart failure. Around 10 per cent of people exposed to diphtheria die from the disease.
Tetanus is a serious bacterial disease that causes muscle spasms and breathing problems, which can lead to:-
•suffocation
•respiratory failure
•pneumonia
•hypertension (high blood pressure)
•hypotension (low blood pressure)
•heart attack.
Pertussis (Whooping Cough) is an extremely contagious infection spread via coughing and sneezing, or contact with an infected person. It causes uncontrolled coughing and vomiting, which can last for several months and can be particularly dangerous for babies under the age of 12 months.
In a household where someone has whooping cough, an estimated 80-90% of the unimmunised contacts of that person will acquire the disease. Since whooping cough causes severe disease in the elderly, adults who are 65 years of age are recommended a single booster dose of dTpa if they haven’t received one already in the previous 10 years. About one in 200 infants under the age of six months who contract whooping cough will die from pneu-monia or brain damage.
So it is imperative that ALL eligible students receive their vaccinations, AND, it is so easy for this to hap-pen. Parents/carers only need to sign and return the permission forms which are distributed by the school to eligible students. Please! Sign and return these forms, and discuss with your youngster why it is so important for them to be immunised.
