Choice Based Credit System for Post Graduation StudiesResearch and experience has revealed that the learner centric

contextual curriculum recommended and the desired learneroutcomes proposed can be achieved mainly through Choice BasedCredit System (CBCS). The system, which is in vogue in most ofthe Universities, is a vital tool of bringing the transformation in thetraditional higher education system of India. CBCS operates onmodular pattern based on module/units called "credits" wherein 'credit'defines the quantum of contents/syllabus prescribed for a course/paper and determines the minimum number of teaching-learning hoursrequired.

Page 25: MOUNT CARMEL COLLEGEmccblr.edu.in/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/MCC-Calendar-2019-20.pdf · Mount Carmel College for women is owned and run by the congregation of the Carmelite Sisters

25

The ultimate goal is to bring reforms in higher education so thatstudents develop thinking as well as analytical ability, he/she getsequipped with necessary skills ultimately making him/her suitablefor an employment and to integrate values of our culture witheducation.

Introduction of Choice Based Credit System (CBCS)and Cumulative Grade Point Average Method of

Evaluation (CGPA)

Definition and Classification of Courses under the CBCS

Programme means a particular field of study comprising of severalcourses chosen for the award of the degree in that field.

'Duration of programme' means the time period required for theconduct of the programme. The duration of Postgraduate degreeprogramme shall be four semesters distributed in a period of2 years.

Course means a subject of study in a programme.

Semester means a term consisting of a minimum of 5 monthsincluding the days of examination.

Credit of a course is a measure of the weekly unit of workassigned for the course.

Credit defines the quantum of content/syllabus prescribed forthe course. It may be a unit prescribed for a course and is determinedby the number of hours of instruction required per week. Thus, ineach course credits will be assigned on the basis of the no. of hoursrequired per week for lectures/tutorials/lab work/field work tocomplete the course in a single semester.

1 credit = 1 hour of direct teaching / week

1 credit = 2 hours of lab work / week

1 credit = 2 hours of field work /project / week

Page 26: MOUNT CARMEL COLLEGEmccblr.edu.in/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/MCC-Calendar-2019-20.pdf · Mount Carmel College for women is owned and run by the congregation of the Carmelite Sisters

26

Thus, 1 credit course requires 1 hour per week during a 15 weeksemester and accordingly a 3 credit or 4 credit courses requires 3or 4 hours per week during a 15 week semester.

A course which has 3-4 hours per week per semester withweightage of 3 to 4 credits is considered as a full course.

A paper with 2 credits is like a half paper.

A course of 3 credits may be so designed that there willbe 2 credits for theory and 1 credit for lab work/ field work/ projectwork.

A course of 4 credits may be so designed that there willbe 3 credits for theory and 1 credit for lab work/ field work/ projectwork.

Typically a course will comprise of 4(four) units.

Core Course (CC) refers to that course which embodies skillsand knowledge considered essential and thus made mandatory forall students Perusing a particular programme it involves a courseof study that is deemed central.

Allied Course (AC) is the one which is closely related tocore course, which facilitates the understanding of the core courseand hence made mandatory for a particular programme of astudy.

Elective Courses (EC) are a group of courses that a studentcan select from among given alternative groups of the main subject.

Soft Course (SC) is a course which enhances the personalattributes of an individual's interactions, job performance and careerprospects and Entrepreneurial qualities.

A workshop will be conducted for the PG students on PersonalEffectiveness and Business Communication in the I semester andEntrepreneurship in the III Semester. Attendance for both workshops iscompulsory. Students who fail to attend these workshops will not bepermitted to take up the End Semester Examinations for that particularsemester.

Open Elective Course (OEC) is a cross disciplinary course whichcombines several fields of study of academic interest.

Composition of Courses in a Programme spread over FourSemesters (first, second, third and fourth respectively)
