To the Friends of the Mount Carmel Foundation:

W elcome to the Summer 2014 issue of Inspire. This is a special edition, as we celebrate 30 years of the Mount Carmel Foundation. And as we look back on three decades of furthering the mission of the Mount Carmel Health System, we are proud to share some of the stories that have made this year unlike any other.

You’ll learn about the Blessing and Dedication of the Dr. Joseph Gallen Maternity Pavilion at Mount Carmel St. Ann’s. It honors two groundbreaking St. Ann’s physicians who dedicated their careers to the care of women and children in Central Ohio, and the endowment fund their family and friends established to extend their legacy.

Speaking of moms and babies, we’re highlighting two Foundation-supported programs that are helping them get good starts today: Moms2B, which provides personal, health and medical support before and after birth, and a Welcome Home initiative that provides free HALO® SleepSacks as part of safe sleep education.

We’re also pleased to recognize two individuals who have been instrumental to the success of the Mount Carmel College of Nursing and the Mount Carmel Foundation Board of Trustees. And we’ll introduce you to the new leaders who will take up the torch for both of these organizations going forward.

So enjoy this edition of Inspire. Each and every one of you inspires us with your support and commitment to the Foundation’s mission-driven programs. For more information on the Foundation, visit mountcarmelfoundation.org and email us at [email protected].

New Clinic A Steadying Force For Patients With Dizziness, Balance and Falls Issues

Mount Carmel has good news for people living with dizziness and balance disorders. The new Falls and Balance Clinic, located at Mount Carmel Rehab Services at West, is now open and offers expert, collaborative care and advanced technologies to diagnose and treat balance issues.

Using state-of-art diagnostic tools like Rotary Chair Assessment and computerized Dynamic Posturography, the clinic’s experts can accurately assess every aspect of a patient’s

balance, from their vision, hearing and inner ear to the feeling in their feet and their reaction times. With that knowledge in hand, the clinicians work in partnership with patients, their primary care physicians and other specialists to treat these troubling disorders.

The Falls and Balance Clinic was made possible through a generous donation from the Mount Carmel Foundation.

“This equipment and the knowledge and dedication of our therapists have positioned us to be a center

of excellence for the evaluation and treatment of balance and vestibular disorders,” said Mount Carmel Rehab Services Manager Jason Hazelrigg. “We’re very grateful to the Foundation and its supporters for their generosity in making it possible.”

To learn more about the clinic or to schedule an appointment, call 614-234-5070.

Brenda Stier-Anstine Recognized For Board Service

Some Mount Carmel Foundation board members have distinguished themselves with generous, charitable giving.

Others have given their time and energy. Still others have shared counsel and advice. Brenda Stier-Anstine has provided all three.

In celebration of her dedication to Mount Carmel and to mark the closure of her term of service, Stier-Anstine was honored at the December Trustee meeting.

“The Foundation and Board of Trustees

have greatly benefitted from Brenda’s vision, leadership and passion for Mount Carmel,” said Foundation Chair Su Lok. “She has helped make the Foundation a stronger organization and better positioned to help those in need.”

From the start, Stier-Anstine proved to be an exceptional leader – immediately forming and chairing a Communications Committee while also serving on the Development and Executive Committees. In 2008 she was elected Vice Chair, and in 2009 became Chair – a position she held through 2012.

Stier-Anstine has a deep-seated commitment to Mount Carmel and demonstrated as much by serving as co-chair of the Project GRACE capital

campaign that raised nearly $5 million for the Mount Carmel St. Ann’s expansion. She brought resources to the table, built and strengthened philanthropic relationships within the community, and personally and professionally supported the Foundation.

In addition to her service on the Foundation board, Stier-Anstine is CEO of Marketing Works, a marketing and public relations firm she started in 1996. She has received numerous awards in the community for her involvement in many efforts.

Please join the board and the Foundation in thanking Brenda Stier-Anstine for her numerous contributions and unwavering commitment to Mount Carmel.

A NEWSLETTER FOR FRIENDS OF MOUNT CARMEL FOUNDATION I SUMMER 2014

Mount Carmel St. Ann’s celebrated the Blessing and Dedication of the Dr. Joseph Gallen Maternity Pavilion on April 26. Over 100 guests, which included members of the Gallen Memorial Endowment Fund Steering Committee, members of the Gallen family from all over the country, and many grateful patients of Dr. Joseph Gallen Jr., joined in the festivities.

Dr. Joseph Gallen Sr. and Dr. Joseph Gallen Jr. played pivotal roles in the history of Mount Carmel St. Ann’s and the lives of thousands of mothers they served. Dr. Gallen Sr. was the first Chief of Staff of Mount Carmel St. Ann’s. His son, Dr. Gallen Jr., followed in his footsteps, also becoming Chief of Staff of St. Ann’s and serving as Chairman of the OB/GYN Department for almost 25 years.

The Dr. Joseph Gallen Sr., Dr. Joseph and Janet Gallen Memorial Endowment Fund carries their commitment forward, providing funding for Mount Carmel’s Welcome Home program, which offers free postpartum home visits for mothers and infants.

To honor their service to Mount Carmel St. Ann’s and the women and children of central Ohio, the maternity pavilion was renamed in their honor. A legacy wall in the maternity pavilion proudly displays photos and information about the accomplishments of the Gallen doctors, features significant artifacts from their careers, and recognizes donors to the endowment fund.

Gratitude and thanks go out to the endowment fund steering committee,

including Nancy Plank Kelley, Chairwoman; Peggy Kelley; Missy Weiler; Molly Marsh; Tim Gallen; Peter Gallen; Dr. Phil Shubert; and Doug Stein.

“We are grateful to all the donors who have honored the legacy and contributions of Dr. Joe Gallen -- both of them,” said Mount Carmel Foundation Senior Development Officer Erin Stitzel. “We look forward to reaching our $500,000 goal.”

For more information on how you can support the fund, please contact Erin Stitzel at 614-898-8952 or [email protected].

While it may seem hard to believe in an era of advancing healthcare and technology, infant mortality is still a very real problem in the United States and even here in Franklin County. But thanks to two Mount Carmel Foundation-supported programs, more Central Ohio moms and their babies are getting safer, healthier starts.

The first of those involves HALO® SleepSacks. Thanks to the support of KEMBA Financial Credit Union and the Foundation, Mount Carmel’s Welcome Home Program is delivering free HALO® SleepSacks to moms and their newborns as part of the safe sleep education provided during every home visit.

HALO® SleepSacks are wearable

blankets that, in addition to being warm and cuddly, are a safer

alternative to loose blankets and other soft items in babies’

cribs that can contribute to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).

Mount Carmel West has also become the newest partner site for the Moms2B Program, a new community partnership developed by The Ohio State University that helps expectant mothers build relationships with healthcare providers; provides health assessments and peer support; and takes care of new families’ nutritional needs through healthy meal preparation and access to mobile food pantries.

Participants meet weekly for a healthy meal; receive medical, social and peer support during their pregnancies and following the birth of their babies; learn about positive health habits; and receive help from staff regarding barriers to a healthy start. Moms also have access to educational resources, including GED and job preparation assistance, preconception health support, and tips on infant care, breastfeeding, safe sleep practices and parenting.

“Mount Carmel is dedicated to ensuring that every baby starts life

healthy,” said Mount Carmel Outreach Clinical Manager Mary Jo Dickinson. “These programs and others like them are helping us actively address the infant mortality rate in Franklin County and the incidence of SIDS, which is the third-leading cause of infant death in the U.S.”

Thanks to the generosity of more than 530 physicians, corporate partners and community leaders, the Mount Carmel Foundation’s 15th annual Champagne & Diamonds gala helped bring total contributions to the Ann E. Schiele Presidential Endowment Fund to more than $1.2 million.

This year’s gala honored Dr. Ann Schiele, President and Dean of Mount Carmel College of Nursing, for her more than 50 years of service to Mount Carmel, her incredible vision and impact on the College, and her unparalleled commitment and dedication to the field of nursing education. She will shortly become the

College’s President Emeritus.

“Dr. Schiele has been, and continues to be, a tremendous ambassador for the College and for nursing education,” said Brian Tierney, Mount Carmel College of Nursing board member “It’s a fitting tribute that so many people turned out to honor her and that the fund established in her name has generated so much support.”

The Mount Carmel Foundation extends its sincere thanks to everyone who contributed

to the success of this year’s event, including Emergency Services, Inc., (Diamond Sponsor); Altercare Centers for Rehabilitation & Nursing Care, Inc., American Electric Power, Central Ohio Newborn Medicine, PNC, and Quandel-Hunt, A Joint Venture (Platinum Sponsors).

A NEWSLETTER FOR FRIENDS OF MOUNT CARMEL FOUNDATION I SUMMER 2014

The Mount Carmel Foundation forged a new partnership with the Cristo Rey Columbus High School Professional Work-Study Program for the 2013-2014 school year that brought students inside the Mount Carmel community to work and learn.

Cristo Rey is the newest Catholic high school in Columbus, and the school’s unique work-study program empowers children from low-to-moderate-income families of all faiths to gain valuable work-place skills and experience in exchange for their tuition.

As a business partner with Cristo Rey, Mount Carmel sponsored eight students to work within its Creative Services Department, Mission Services, Health Sciences Library, and the Foundation. In addition to having worked one full work day during the week at Mount Carmel, each student maintained a full schedule of

Cristo Rey Students Learning To Work, Working To Learn At Mount Carmel

college-preparatory coursework.

There are 26 Cristo Rey high schools across the country. Cristo Rey Columbus High School is the newest addition, opening in 2013. Historically, 97% of Cristo Rey seniors graduate from high school and 98% of graduates enroll in

a two or four-year college. The work-study program is one example of how the school works hand in hand with the community to broaden the educational experience for its students.

The Mount Carmel Foundation inadvertently omitted a group of donors from our 2013 Annual Report. We regret and apologize for the error, and would like to thank the following members of the $500+ Advocates Giving Society for their generous support.

The Mount Carmel College of Nursing Board of Trustees, together with Mount Carmel Health System and the

Mount Carmel Foundation, is pleased to welcome Christine Wynd, PhD, RN, as the College’s new President and Dean. Dr. Wynd began transitioning to her new role on July 1, succeeding Ann Schiele, PhD, RN, who has held the post for 23 years.

Dr. Wynd came to Mount Carmel from the Breen School of Nursing at Ursuline College in Pepper Pike, Ohio, where she had served as Dean and Strawbridge

Professor since 2007 and presided over both undergraduate and graduate nursing programs. Her experience in nursing education includes directing the PhD in Nursing program at the University of Akron and teaching at both The Ohio State University and Case Western Reserve University.

Dr. Wynd retired from the U.S. Army Reserve Nurse Corps at the rank of colonel in 2001. Her military experience includes serving as Chief Nurse for two separate Combat Support Hospitals and as the Reserve Representative to the Office of the Assistant Chief, Army Nurse Corps.

She received her doctoral degree in Nursing Executive Administration from Case Western Reserve University, a

master’s degree in nursing from The Ohio State University and a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Saint John College.

Dr. Wynd was selected following an extensive national search, led by a search committee chaired by College Board of Trustees member Brian Tierney.

Board Chair Matt Mazza said of her selection, “Dr. Wynd is an exceptional leader who has the vision and dedication to take nursing education to the next level, to meet the ever-changing demands and opportunities in healthcare and higher education now and well into the future. She will be a tremendous asset to the continued growth and sustainability of the College.”
