In a submission for the 2012 Land Art Generator Initiative Competition, we proposed a landscape installation reflecting the flightpath (particularly 600 metres of this journey) for migratory birds.

The installation, to be located in Freshkills Park, Staten Island NY (on top of an old landfill) would involve capturing 50 variations of a bird’s wing movement, all welded together in a steel tensile structure; each wing would span 60 metres and rise a maximum of 2 storeys. Resistance to lateral movement would be provided by way of a galvanized steel mesh covering (rather then penetrating) the landfill. Use of a photovoltaic fabric membrane (made of renewable and natural organic materials) for the wings could be expected to generate enough energy to power 550 homes.

Complementary to the competition, an ARCHITECTURAL PROGRAM was proposed in the studio, sited in Freshkills’ North Mound, across from the installation. The Freshkills Park Visual Interpretive Centre creates an interactive learning experience through five unique viewing galleries, each themed to represent an element of the park. A collection of ‘viewfinders,’ manifested by way of windows and lookouts accompany each gallery. A system of elevated paths/walkways culminates in the strategically placed lookout points. The galleries surround a large interior courtyard designated for picnics, outdoor games and a general rest area for visitors.

Sited in Bogota, Colombia, this studio develops an alternative approach for high-density housing (200 units). The design mediates between formal government housing north of the site and informal housing located south. Formal multi-residential housing also characterizes the area’s designation.

This scheme looks to informal settlements for cues to provide a greater degree of autonomy and to satisfy fundamental social needs. Home businesses (expected to be materially diverse), terraces and circulation cores create permeating ‘cut-outs.’

Utilizing rehabilitation criteria in the Standards and Guidelines for Conservation Practice in Canada, this project involved designing elevations for an addition to the Nova Scotia Trust building in Halifax. The addition attempts to retain the public facade and enhance the traditional street setting.

In another conservation project, a preservation strategy was developed for the Little Dutch Church in Halifax (constructed in 1750-51). Character-defining elements including windows and wall construction (latter shown here), construction/assembly, age, materiality, hardware, weathering and moisture issues were of particular consideration

Consider the downtown of any smaller urban centre – typically in some state of decline/stagnation. In response, policies speak to general programmatic, planning and urban ideals, but do not account for the complexities that enable some downtowns to function and others not.

This thesis thus frames an approach to urban renewal that begins to address such complexities. The downtown under study is located in Fort William, one of two historic cores in Thunder Bay, Ontario. It reflects a historically/architecturally significant neighbourhood, part of the civic core, but suffers from chronic vacancies.

Working within a conceptual framework based on the discourse of adaptive reuse, programmatic gaps are identified, then tested within architectural solutions encompassing new form intercepting old. These responses are intended to then strengthen surrounding urban relationships.

This thesis aims to move away from the notion of ‘one solution.’ Instead, overlapped transformative strategies meaningfully lead the downtown through re-purposing its identity.

PRECEDENT PROJECTS REVEAL THE LANGUAGE OR STRATEGIES FOR ADAPTATION AND INTERVENTION

When examining the discourse surrounding adaptive reuse projects, a unique language begins to emerge. Words became potential strategies to both read and intervene on any given site. Stepping back from conventional manners of revitalization, it then becomes a useful exercise to abstract and consequently explore the application of this evocative discourse. In this case, the site is a historical neighbourhood in Thunder Bay’s South Core.

LANGUAGE AS REVEALED THROUGH DISCOURSE:

Incision, Layering, Peeling, Accretion, Abstraction, Insertion, Infill, Interstitial, Juxtaposition, Reordering, Reconnecting, Subordination, Subtraction, Remains and Residue, Superimpose, Connective Tissue, Equilibrium, Junction and Third Identity

i n s e r t i o n / i n c i s i o nIsolating the historic block initially as its own entity, key moves within the neighbourhood begin in the efforts to undergo adaptation.

The first site for exploration (and also a strong counterpoint to the urban dominance of the mall) is the INSERTION OF A GALLERY BEHIND THE OLD BANK FACADE. The former building burned down in a 2007 fire.

The intent behind this thesis is to examine the possibilities for renewal within the heritage block. This focused study is undertaken with the acknowledgment that the Victoriaville Civic Centre remains just as critical to address.

Renewal is expected to then filter out from these initial sites.

Speculating on the phasing of renewal strategies within the larger context.

1. Renewal to focus primarily on Victoria Avenue, between May and Simpson Streets

2. Renewal to spread into surrounding vacant (parking) lots

3. Redevelopment of Victoriaville Civic Centre

4. Spillage of revitalization into adjacent retail commerce (particularly May and Brodie)

5. 5A Option 1: Develop renewal scheme for ‘strip’ retail west of Victoriaville

6. 5B Option 2: Develop renewal scheme for Simpson Street Warehouse Block

In collaboration with the Mi’kmaq community, particularly the local high school students, a group of us as part of Dalhousie’s Cities & Environment Unit designed and constructed an outdoor equipment storage building to house six canoes, six kayaks and 20 mountain bikes. The rectilinear structure, running about 20 metres, abuts against a narrow deck that widens to culminate into a large square platform in the rear, offering a distant view of the Bras d’Or Lake.
