Time to change...

With January comes the welcoming of a new year, with its resolutions and fresh starts. We celebrate Jesus coming to His people and experience a new beginning, where the slate feels wiped clean for each of us and we are offered the chance to become one with God. So many new beginnings, so many New Year’s resolutions, but how many survive beyond January? The reality is that we, ourselves, travel through Advent and Christmas and on into a new year, but we are the same at the end as we were at the beginning. It is as if we expected God to change us without us even really noticing it, so that the regrets of last year will painlessly be transformed into the gifts of the coming year. Of course, God doesn’t work like that. The only way that there will be change in ourselves is if we bring about that change by being determined to be a different person. Only we can change our habits, our behaviour, our opinions and the way we interact with people around us. As we face a world that seems less and less able to show the values of Jesus, so we as Christians are challenged to show those values more and more in our daily lives. Just as Jesus was a light to the world some 2000 years ago, we are the light in the world today – the light that people meet in their ordinary lives. If we can't change and show the values of Jesus, if all we do is mirror the bad-tempered and abusive behaviour we see in our politics and media, then we will have no light to give out. Changing ourselves is not easy, which is why New Year’s resolutions are so tough to keep. But, by being part of the church at worship, by reading the Scriptures and meditating on them, by building a prayer relationship with God, we will be able to change, if we truly want to. Change is driven by love, which is why God gives us that magnificent gift of love at Christmas in the baby Jesus. Let all of our New Year's resolutions be to change ourselves, for the love of Jesus, so that we can be a light to everyone around us and we can play our small part in transforming the world from a place of ha-tred, jealousy and fear to one of love and mutual respect. Wishing you and all those you love a peaceful New Year and God’s blessing on all that is to come in 2020.

On the 6th of January we celebrate Epiphany - the visit of the wise men to the baby Jesus. But who were these wise men?

No one knows for sure. Matthew calls them ‘Magi’, and that was the name of an ancient priestly caste from Persia, now Iran.

It wasn’t until the 3rd century that they were described as ‘almost kings’ - by a church father, Tertullian.

Another church father, Origen, assumed there were three - to correspond with the three gifts mentioned. But in the tradition of the Eastern church, based on an 8th century Syriac chronicle, there were twelve magi and possibly more. They might also have travelled with an entourage of disciples, students and servants. Matthew tells us only that there were at least two - the word ‘Magi’ is plural. The names Balthazar (Balthassar), Melchior and Caspar (Gaspar) appear in this

Ravenna mosaic of around 500 A.D.

The magi’s star was as intriguing for ancient Christians as it is for us today. The first question this star raised for them was how the magi knew that its appearance heralded the birth of a new Jewish king. Some of these early Christians assumed that the magi knew of the prophet Balaam’s prediction in Numbers chapter 24 verse 17 that ‘a star shall come out of Jacob’.

A second question was how the star guided the magi to the very house in Bethlehem where Jesus lived. Ancient Christians knew

that no ordinary star could do this, and they assumed that the star was an angel or vision that God had created for this occasion. Matthew’s narrative never explains how this might have happened, paving the way for later texts to fill in the gaps. Thus, in the Revelation of the Magi, the star is Christ, who becomes a luminous infant after leading the magi to Bethlehem.

Later Christian interpretation came to see the gold as a symbol of wisdom and wealth, the incense as a symbol of worship and sacrifice, and the myrrh as a symbol of healing - and embalming. Certainly Jesus challenged and set aright the way in which the world handled all three of these things.

News from ‘Parish Pump’

The Archbishop of Canterbury’s New Year message

“Let’s go for a heroic new year’s resolution. Let’s resolve to reconnect. To reach out to just one person we don’t know, or from whom we have drifted apart.”

“Pick one person. Pick up the phone. Send them a text. Meet them for a cup of tea. Make that connection. Let’s begin cementing our unity one brick at a time.”

Justin Welby recorded his message at Dover lifeboat station, saying: “As we wonder how we are going to start healing some of the divisions that we’ve seen over recent years, the sort of people at this lifeboat station are signs of hope.”

More than 70 volunteers keep the lifeboat service operational 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The seagoing crew ranges in age from 17 to 62 and includes a student, a train driver, a chef and an electrician.

“When their pagers go off, day or night, they’re prepared to risk everything to rescue whoever needs their help. We rightly think of lifeboat crews as heroic, although they may be embarrassed to hear that. Yet every time we reach out and connect with someone, it is an act of heroism. Don’t underestimate it. It could be someone you know. It could be someone you’ve always wanted to connect with but never have. It could be someone you really disagree with.”

“Connecting with others could involve joining a voluntary organisation or a charity, sorting donations at a food bank - or joining a lifeboat crew.”

“When we hear someone described as a good Samaritan, we think about that person taking the time to help another. But it’s a story told by Jesus about someone taking the risk of reaching out to another who was very different to them. Yes, the person needed help – but they also needed connection.”

“Jesus took the risk of connecting with people who were separated from him”.

C of E’s Environment Group calls for greater church action on Climate Change

The Church of England’s Environmental Advisory Group has called for all parts of the Church to recognise the Climate Crisis and step up action to safeguard God’s creation. Several areas of focus for 2020 have been identified, including a Lent Campaign on the Environment backed by the Archbishop of Canterbury and plans for events surrounding COP 26, the UN climate change summit, in Glasgow.

A message from the editor

This ‘January Extra’ magazine is an experiment. It is costly to have our magazine professionally printed; in fact the cost is becoming unsustainable. Tony Kershaw suggested using the church photocopier instead and has kindly offered to help with this trial run to test the process and work out the costings. This issue will be available in church only. Because it is not being delivered to regular subscribers, ‘Registers and Records’ has been omitted. ‘Registers and Records’ will be included in the February issue, which will be delivered to subscribers as usual.
