Mottram Parish Magazine We aim to be ~ a growing fellowship of believers ~ warm in welcome ~ reverent in worship ~ gracious in witness ~ and joyfully serving God and our community ~ ‘St George and the dragon’ by Pedro Nisart. Painted between 1468 and 1470 in Mallorca as the centre-piece to an altar triptych. George was said to have been an officer in the Roman Praetorian Guard who was tortured and executed in Lydda (modern Lod in Israel) in 303 AD for refusing to sacrifice to the emperor Diocletian as a god. In early versions of the legend the dragon was cowed and tamed rather than slain. Nisart’s dragon looks distinctly crocodile-like and definitely cowed.
