MOSMAN ART GALLERY NEWSLETTER - SUMMER 08/09Mosman Art Gallery is a cultural service provided by Mosman Council

It’s now ten years since the Mosman Art Gallery & Community Centre opened its doors. This significant occasion was held on December 11, 1998 in the presence of the then Governor General, Sir William Dean and a very large gathering of local identities, artists, residents and special guests.

Looking back over the exhibition schedule since then it’s been an exciting ride for all those closely involved in the Gallery. Life has rarely been dull, as the search for new and interesting exhibitions, public programs and special events has always stretched the imagination and creative capacities of staff and volunteers.

Allan Gamble at the official opening

work of Norman Hetherington; Mr Squiggle: Who’s Pulling the Stings, attracted record media attention and crowds. To compliment the exhibition there were a series of colourful and varied events including puppet shows and workshops for all ages.

The increased participation by the majority of local primary students in the art workshops conducted by staff and volunteer guides is testimony to the important educational role that the Gallery maintains for the local school community. Over 2000 students from five primary schools have enjoyed workshops including sculpture, collage, painting and printmaking in this year alone.

The Grand Hall in the Gallery & Community Centre has witnessed many outstanding cultural events including concerts, book launches and displays. Some of the famous authors who have appeared there include; Robert Hughes, Michael Palin, Geraldine Brooks, Bill Bryson, David Suzuki, Margaret Atwood and Isabelle Allende.

A high profile concert program has also been an important feature of the performances in the Grand Hall. Local and internationally acclaimed flautist, Jane Rutter has performed in concert with renowned pianist Simon Tedeschi and singer Peter Cousins. Orchestral performances include those by artists from the Sydney

Symphony and the Brandenberg Orchestra, not to mention the regular program presented by the Mosman Orchestra.

Major fund raising events for the Gallery have been some of the most memorable and successful occasions. These include: a Fashion Parade, Art Markets, a large Art and Antique Fair and four hugely successful Book Fairs, all run the volunteers.

What this brief list clearly demonstrates is that Mosman has a rich cultural life and heritage which has been the foundation of many outstanding exhibitions and events. More than anything else, the Gallery has brought this life and heritage out into the open for everyone to see, appreciate and celebrate.

Underpinning everything that the Gallery has done over the past ten years is the tireless support provided by dedicated volunteers, gallery guides and the Friends of the Mosman Art Gallery. Without this army of enthusiastic and generous people, the Gallery would not be able to achieve its cultural goals. Due also to the vision and support of the Mosman Council the Gallery has been able to develop its program of events and exhibitions and continue to attract audiences from the local and wider community.

On behalf of Mosman Council and Gallery staff, I wish all our friends and volunteers a safe and happy Christmas and peaceful and prosperous New Year. I would also like to thank and congratulate all those who have contributed so much to the first decade of the Mosman Art Gallery.

Tony Geddes

Director, Mosman Art Gallery

Starting from the beginning, the list of highlights is considerable and too many to detail here. However, some of them are; the exhibition of the Mosman Art Prize in a Gallery for the first time in its history in 1999 and the celebration of the Prize’s 60th Anniversary in 2007. In 2001, the gallery presented Allan Gamble, a Retrospective: Artist, Architect and Advocate celebrating the work of a former Mosman Councillor and founder of the Mosman Art Prize. Margaret Preston in Mosman in 2002 was a very significant exhibition, as was Presence and Landscape: Guy Warren in Retrospect in 2003. These exhibitions set the high standard to which the Gallery constantly aspires. During the first Mosman Festival in 2005, the exhibition featuring the

Salvatore Zofrea has donated four woodcut prints from his recent exhibition at the Mosman Art Gallery, called Days of Summer. These outstanding prints explore the theme of the Australian bush and are similar in style to his large composite work now hanging in the foyer of the Civic Centre.

Finally, local resident and art collector, Grant McCorquodale has donated a large painting by Aboriginal artist Mick Namarari, titled Mouse Dreaming. This significant work was painted shortly before the artist died in 1998. Mick Namarari was one of the founding members of the

Over the past 10 years the Gallery has received many donations of artworks from artists and collectors for the Mosman Art Collection. In recent months the Gallery has been the beneficiary of four generous donations under the Cultural Gifts Program, which provides tax incentives to donors. The donations were made by Ruth Faerber, Ken Done, Salvatore Zofrea and Grant McCorquodale.

Local artist Ruth Faerber has donated 14 works in a variety of media including drawings, paintings, prints and bass reliefs. These works span her career from the 1960s to the late 1990s and demonstrate Ruth’s considerable talents and achievements, and versatility.

Nancy lived in Mosman from 1961 – 2006 and continued painting until her death at the age of 92.

Julie Harris Retrospective charts the progress of Julie Harris from a creator of pop art imagery and colourful screen prints in the1970s to her highly evocative, bush-inspired abstract paintings of recent years. Now a resident of Kurrajong in the Blue Mountains, Julie was born and raised in Mosman and won the Mosman Bi-Centenary Art Competition when she was a student at Queenwood Girls School. Last year she won the prestigious Adelaide Perry Drawing Prize of $15,000.

From 14 March to the 3rd of May there will be two very special exhibitions by women artists who have lived in Mosman and whose work spans several generations. With a career lasting 65 years as an artist and writer, including 9 years as an art critic, Nancy Borlase made a significant contribution to Australian art.

From Balmain to Mosman : Nancy Borlase in Retrospect highlights developments in her art practice from the figurative images of her early career to abstraction in the 1960s to 80s and back to the figure again in the last decades of her life.

NEWS AND EVENTS

2008 has been a full and exciting year for the Friends of the Mosman Art Gallery. It started at the home of Jenny Manton, our warm and welcoming host, as we enjoyed her outstanding private art collection. We have had some lovely excursions to Patonga, (the most perfect weather), explored the Lewers Bequest gardens and gallery in the heat of Western Sydney but were not so fortunate with the weather for Sculpture by the Sea. Thank you to those hardy people who braved the cool rain and wind with bright smiles.

Our annual Gallery fundraiser, viewing the epic movie Australia was enthusiastically supported by our Friends. We were overwhelmed with their generosity and raised nearly $3,000 towards the purchase of art objects for children to handle and examine up close.
