Well done to Lachie Wareham on his selecon in the Under 17 Victorian Country cricket team. The team will be
compeng in the Under 17 naonal championships to be held in Brisbane commencing on September 28. Lachie
has been training and playing in trial matches in Melbourne over recent months and it’s a fantasc achievement to
be selected in a state representave team. Congratulaons Lachie and all the best in the championships.
Pupil-Free day: Friday 30th
October
All families are advised that Friday 30th October will be a pupil-free day to enable all staff to undertake professional
development.
Mortlake Kinder visit
On Monday we welcomed the Mortlake kinder children, staff and parents. They joined us for our Monday morn-
ing assembly where the school choir performed and then the children parcipated in a range of small group acvi-
es. A big thank you to Jane Gough, staff and parents for facilitang the visit.
School Choir
On Tuesday the school choir performed for members of the Mortlake community. They sang at the Uning
church, Abbeyfield and the kindergarten. Well done to all members of the choir and thanks to our choir coordina-
tor Kath Tanner for all her work with a very large group of singers.
P-4 Producon
I would just like to remind all our families that ckets for the P-4 Producon of ‘The Bunyip of Tea Tree Lake’ are
on sale at the school office. The manee will be held on Tuesday 15 September, commencing at 12:00pm and the
evening performance will be on Wednesday 16 September commencing at 7pm. The performances will be held in
the BER building.
Appropriate use of mobile devices at school
As I’ve menoned before technology has the capacity to assist students in their school work both at school and at
home. We understand that most secondary age students will bring a mobile phone to school. However there
needs to be a clear understanding that mobile devices must be used responsibly at all mes. Students are not to
use mobile phones during class me unless the device is being used as part of the learning and the teacher has
requested that they be used. Students who don’t use the technology responsibly will have their devices confiscat-
ed for the day.
Happy Fathers’ Day!
Best wishes to all our fathers for Sunday! Hope you have a fantasc Fathers’ Day!

INSPIRE CHARITY DAY!
In May Inspire held a fundraising day to raise money to support the Taksenkangbloung Commu-nity Centre in Cambodia. We raised over $500.00 and received many items to send to the com-munity Centre from our very generous Mortlake College families. We received the following email of thanks.
Dear Graeme and Mortlake College School Community,
We would like to acknowledge the wonderful donation your whole school community made re-cently to the Taksenkangbloung community centre in Siem reap, Cambodia.
We particularly thank Sue Amos for suggesting and co-ordinating the project also for sharing her interest in our centre and letting you all know about the needs of the children attending the cen-tre.
Thankyou also to the parents club who made the gorgeous bags and to Anthea and Inspire House for collecting donations and money for items.
We will distribute the bags to the children when we go to the centre later this year and you can be assured the presentation will bring much excitement to these children. This will be their first per-sonal possession ever and will be very much appreciated. (Photos will follow!)
Thankyou all for your generosity.
Kind regards, Jenny, Bec and Emma—Taksen community centre

to the choir at assembly. The preps and kinder kids then had fun participating togeth-
er in a variety of activities, such as stamping or sticking stickers on the letters of their
name, jigsaw puzzles and some maths games on the computers. In the library Mrs
Tanner read a story about Edward the emu and we all made an emu mask!

Three weeks ago, 8 students from Mortlake College went on a koorie excursion to the bioLAB centre in Geelong. First we did a program called skin deep, in this we got a deeper understanding of the function and structure of skin. We also looked at the effect of exercise on body tem-perature and did a couple of experiments to provide evidence. The second program we did is called beat that, in this program we looked at the heart and human circulato-ry system. We used and made graphs to analyse our own body's response to exer-cise. The day was very enjoyable and definitely worth while. I'd like to thank everyone for organising it especially Kerry and a big thanks to Steve who ran the excursion. Olivia Anders.
Mortlake College is now in to the eighth week of (HOL) “Hands on Learning Program” which runs on a Wednesday. The program will run for the remainder of the year. HOL takes eight students out of class one day a week fostering teamwork and leadership. Students and two artisan-teachers share breakfast and lunch and work together to create valuable building structures for the school and com-munity. Some of the specific tasks to date have included repairing stairs in the Western Quadrangle and working with the Parents Association to construct school fete structures. Some students in the program have been pulling apart timber pallets to use for garden sculpture and to have a base of ma-terial on hand.
Students develop critical skills and abilities to succeed in work and life in the 21st Century:
Self-esteem, friendships, and a sense of belonging grow as students become more content at school. Motivation, focus and the ability to set goals increase when they return to class - building the plat-form for improvements in literacy and numeracy. Students have been undertaking instruction on the correct use and handling on a range of both hand and electrical tools. Some of these tools include the carpenters saw, cordless drill and a range of finishing tools.
