MORTGAGE BROKERS INSTITUTE ldquoMBIrdquo CERTIFICATIONThe launch of the MBI has been very successful Almost 500 brokers have applied for MBI certification in the short time since the program was created We very much appreciate the feedback received The MBI Mortgage Brokers and holders of the MBI has determined there should be further criteria to qualify for MBI certification At the core of MBI certification is that the member broker subscribes to the MBABC codes of ethics and conduct To properly emphasize this an applicant must pass the new MBI qualification course addressing ethics and conduct in order to qualify for MBI certification The course is available through MBIBC online There is no additional cost for this course but it will be required before your MBI is approved and your certificate is issued The addition of the ethics and conduct course as a requirement to qualify for MBI certification will help enhance the integrity and honour of our profession It will demonstrate that an MBI certification holder has gone beyond the minimum re-licensing requirements and understands the importance of ethics and good conduct in mortgage brokering practice MBI certificates issued from today on will include wording indicating that the holder has completed the MBI qualification course

they have taken the additional course see below for a list of upcoming events Regardless an existing MBI certificate holder will need to take the additional course in order to qualify for next yearrsquos validation seal an annual seal is required for the MBI certification to remain valid and in good standing MBI certification will represent the industry standard of integrity and professionalism for British Columbia Mortgage Brokers Please note that the MBI committee will meet regularly to monitor the program and to best ensure the MBI standard is appropriately maintained The enhanced criteria for MBI certification is as follows

bull has successfully completed the MBI qualification coursebull has passed continuing education courses required for registration renewal through the Mortgage Brokers Institute of British Columbiabull is a member in good standing of the Mortgage Brokers Association of British Columbiabull is subject to the Associations code of ethics and conductbull as a condition of holding the MBI designation is required to be registered under the Mortgage Brokers Act of British Columbia

Please get your applications in as soon as possible to have your Diploma Certificate ready in time for pick up and presentation at one of our events If you cannot attend any of the events we will mail your Diploma Certificate at cost

7 MBABC membership must be renewed every year however the re-licensing period apply regarding the MBI certification

bull To maintain your MBI designation you must renew your MBABC membership each year and you must take the qualifying required re-licensing courses every two years

What if my license is not up for renewal in the current calendar year Can I still apply immediatelybull Yes as long as you successfully completed the MBI qualification course (re ethics and professional conduct)

and you passed continuing education courses required for your most recent registration renewal through MBIBC Of course you have to meet the non-education criteria as well

You must have practiced for 2 years and have passed your re-licensing courses when your license

10 How will the public know I am MBI certified bull

The MBABC data base will recognize all member candidates with the MBI certification There will also be advertising about MBI qualified mortgage brokers You will be entitled to use ldquoMBIrdquo

11 Is the MBI trademarkedbull The MBI will be trademark protected

12 Is MBI certification mandatory in order for me to be a mortgage broker in BC bull No obtaining MBI certification is not mandatory but is a great benefit available to those

with an MBABC membership
