Gently dig around any locator paint marks to actually find the utility lines or cables. They might not be where the paint mark appears as paint marks indicate approximate locations in a "tolerance zone." In Georgia, a tolerance zone is 24” on either side of a paint mark. Dig parallel to the paint marks. Use paint to outline the wall location and shape. Hammer grade stakes into the ground and attach string line as a digging guide. Calculate the square footage of the wall by multiplying its length by its width. Select stone and consult Stone Forest for the quantities needed. Similar stone sizes are easiest to work with, but 1 or 2 sizes of stone can improve aesthetics. Excavation Have a plan for reuse or removal of all excavated dirt. Determine whether the wall will be stepped or sloped if it is built on a slope. Determine if the wall will be a retaining or freestanding wall. Excavate soil about 6-7” deep. The trench should be about 2-4” wider on both sides of the finished wall. Start at the lowest point if you’re building the wall on a slope.
