Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord - Year A
Palm Sunday Easter Sunday 5th April 2020 20th April 2020 First Reading Isaiah 50:4-7 Acts 10:34, 37-43 Second Reading Philippians 2:6-11 Colossians 3:1-4 Gospel Matthew 26:14-27:66 John 20:1-9
PSALM RESPONSE: My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
GOSPEL ACCL: Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ, King of endless glory! Christ became obedient for us even to death, dying on the Cross. Therefore God raised Him on high and gave Him a name above all other names. Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ, King of endless glory!
Did You Know?
The words of Jesus from the Cross in this text are in Aramaic, the language Jesus spoke.
This Sunday is also known as ‘Palm Sunday’ and commemorates Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem. Celebrations similar to those carried out in churches today, were being held in Jerusalem as early as the fourth century.
The narratives of the Passion of Jesus - the arrest, trial, crucifixion and death - are the earliest strands of what came to be written down as the Gospels.
Since the fourth century, the site now marked by the Church of the Holy Sepulchre has been revered as the site of Calvary,
Symbols and Images
There are two central images in this week’s liturgy: The Palms signify the glory and triumph of Jesus, as well, as reminding us
of His entry into Jerusalem before His death; The Cross represents Christ’s love for the world and the sacrifice He
made so that salvation was available to all people.
Reflection
How will knowing of the Cross of Christ help you to carry your own crosses in the future?
What emotions stir in you as you read or listen to the Passion of the Lord?

Palms and olive branches are kept in our
homes as a witness to our faith in Jesus
Christ, the Messianic King. He began His
journey to Calvary and death on the Cross
leading to the Paschal Victory of Easter
Sunday. Today He invite us to journey with Him and carry our crosses,
both physical and spiritual, the depravation of the reception of the
Sacraments, especially the Holy Eucharist and attending Holy Mass.
Parishioners might also be conscious of the need to collect palms

I Am Your Father! Let us contemplate these words of our Heavenly Father
as spoken to us personally.
“My child You may not know Me, but I know everything
about you. I know when you sit down and when you rise. I am
familiar with all your ways. Even the very hairs on your head
are numbered, for you were made in My Image.
“In Me you live and move and have your being, for you
are My offspring. I knew you even before you were conceived. I
chose you when I planned creation. You were not a mistake,
for all your days are written in My Book. I determined the ex-
act time of your birth and where you would live. You are faith-
fully and wonderfully made. I knit you together in your moth-
er’s womb and I brought you forth on the day you were born.
“I have been mispresented by those who don’t know Me. I
am not distant and angry, but am the complete expression of
love, and it is My desire to lavish my Love on you, simply be-
cause you are My child and I am your Father.
“I offer you more than your earthly father ever could, for
I am the Perfect Father. Every good gift that you receive
comes from My hand for I am your Provider and I meet all
your needs. My plan for your future has always been filled
with hope because I love you with an everlasting love. My
thoughts towards you are countless as the sands on the sea-
shore, and I rejoice over you with singing. I will never stop do-
ing good to you for you are my treasured possession. I desire
to establish you with all my Heart and all my Soul, and I want
to show you great and marvellous things.
“If you seek Me with all your heart you will find Me. Delight in
Me and I will give you the desires of your heart for it is I who
gave you those desires. I am able to do for you, more than you
could possibly imagine, for I am your greatest Encourager and
am also your Father, who comforts you in all your troubles.
When you are broken hearted, I am close to you. As a shep-
herd carries a lamb, I have carried you close to my Heart.
“One day I will wipe away every tear from your eyes and I
will take away all the pain you suffered on this earth.
“ I am your Father and I love you even as I love my Son
Jesus. For in Jesus my Love for you is revealed. He is the ex-
act Representation of my Being, and He came to demonstrate
that I am for you - not against you, and to tell you that I am
not counting your sins.
“Jesus died so that You and I could be reconciled. His
Death was the ultimate expression of my Love for you. I gave
up everything I loved that I might gain your love. If you re-
ceive the gift of my Son Jesus, you receive Me, and nothing
will ever separate you from my Love again. Come home and I
will throw the biggest party heaven has ever seen.
“I have always been Father and will always be Father.
My question is - will you be My child?
I am waiting for you!
Love your Dad,
Almighty God.”

“Churches are NOT being closed. Buildings are being closed.
You are the Church! You are to remain open.”
Bishop Greg O’Kelly SJ, Apostolic Administrator
SUMMARY - SPECIAL PANDEMIC INDULGENCE
“Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer” (Romans 12:12).
The value of human suffering is twofold: “It is supernatural because it is rooted in the Divine Mystery of the Redemption of the world,
and it is likewise deeply human, because in it the person discovers himself,
his own humanity, his own dignity, his own mission” (Pope St John Paul II, Apostolic Letter SALVIFICI DOLORIS)
The Vatican’s Apostolic Penitentiary announced an opportunity for a ple-nary indulgence during the current coronavirus pandemic.
According to THE DECREE, “the gift of special Indulgences is granted to the faithful suffering from COVID-19 disease, commonly known as Coro-navirus, as well as to health care workers, family members, and all those who in any capacity, including through prayer, and care for them.” A PLENARY INDULGENCE removes all temporal punishment due to sin, but one must have “a spirit detached from any sin” for it to completely apply.
THE FAITHFUL WHO QUALIFY FOR A PLENARY INDULGENCE DURING THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC:
Those suffering from the coronavirus illness Those ordered to quarantine themselves due to the virus Health care workers, family members, and others caring for those
with the coronavirus (exposing themselves to contagion)
To do at least one of the following:
Unite yourself spiritually through the media in the celebration of the Holy Mass
Recite the Rosary Pious practice of the Way of the Cross (or other forms of devotion)
Recite the Creed, the Lord’s Prayer, and “a pious invocation to the Blessed Virgin Mary, offering this trial in a spirit of faith in God and charity towards their brothers and sisters.”
Also must perform ALL of the following as soon as possible: (considered the three usual conditions for a plenary indulgence)
Sacramental Confession Eucharistic communion Pray for the Pope’s intentions
THE FAITHFUL NOT SUFFERING FROM THE CORONAVIRUS CAN: “Implore the Almighty God for the end of the epidemic, relief for those who are afflicted, and eternal salvation for those whom the Lord has called to Himself.”
In addition to the usual conditions mentioned above for a plenary indul-gence, do at least one of the following:
Visit the Blessed Sacrament or go to Eucharistic Adoration Read the Holy Scriptures for at least half an hour Recite Holy Rosary Pious exercise of the Way of the Cross Recite the Chaplet of Divine Mercy
PLENARY INDULGENCE FOR THOSE UNABLE TO RECEIVE THE ANOINTING OF THE SICK:
The decree adds that “the Church [we the faithful] prays for those who find themselves unable to receive the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick and of the Viaticum, entrusting each and every one to divine Mercy by virtue of the communion of saints and granting the faithful a Plenary Indulgence on the point of death, provided that they are duly disposed and have recited a few prayers during their lifetime (in this case the Church [the Body of Christ] makes up for the three usual conditions re-quired). For the attainment of this indulgence the use of the crucifix or the cross is recommended.”
Pray for an end to the coronavirus pandemic and all suffering from the coronavirus!
