Parish News

Dear Parishioners, Jesus doesn’t seem like a very good salesman, does he? It must have driven his apostles mad. Here they were, going from town to town, curing the sick, driving out demons, and gathering a huge following. We are told that it got to the point where he couldn’t even enter a town, so much did the people come out to see him. This is probably exactly what the apostles were hoping for, a charismatic leader who could unite the people and lead them wherever he wanted. Jesus asks them in this weekend’s gospel who the people were saying that he was, and they excitedly told him that they were saying he might be John the Baptist or Elijah or one of the ancient prophets, but that they thought he was the Messiah himself. In other words, he had them, they believed, and they just needed to be rallied by Jesus, give ‘em a pep talk and they were ready to follow him. So Jesus addresses the crowd, and all become very quiet so they can hear him, and he says, “If you want to be my disciple, if you want to go where I go, this is what you must do: deny yourself, take up your cross daily and follow me. You must lose your life for my sake if you want to save it.” It’s hard to imagine much excitement after that. You can imagine the disappointment of the apostles as the fervor of the crowd fades while they digest what Jesus has told them. Why bring this up now? Why, when the people are buzzing about who Jesus might be, does he decide to tell them how hard it is going to be to follow him? It may not appear to us that Jesus was much of a salesman, that he could have gotten a much bigger following if he had eased up a bit, but Jesus wasn’t primarily interested in the numbers. Yes, he wants everyone to follow him because he is the Lord of all creation, but he doesn’t just want followers; he wants disciples. He is not interested in just having a big crowd behind him, professing their faith in him without really doing anything differently than those who don’t believe, without living their faith, without living the life of a true disciple. He wants disciples who are in it all the way, who are willing to deny themselves and their own will and pick up their cross daily, because that is what he did. He emptied himself, doing the Father’s will in all things and accepting the cross that was put upon him, so his disciples must do the same. That is a hard message, one that takes some careful thought. Do we engage our faith, does it affect our lives? Do we find our will bumping up against it so that we have to consciously deny ourselves in order to continue on the path that Jesus has laid out, as hard as that may seem? Or do we wonder what the big deal is; do we think following Jesus isn’t that hard? If the latter, then it is probable that we aren’t denying ourselves and picking up our cross, that we are straying from the path on which Jesus is leading and don’t realize it. Denying ourselves and taking up our cross in order to follow Jesus is a hard message, but one that Jesus deliberately gave to us. He does not want followers in name only. He wants disciples, ones who will live the life daily, who will renew their commitment to him over and over again. Let us be true disciples, denying ourselves and our own will, picking up the cross that that entails, and follow our Lord all the way to the gates of heaven. Fr. Liekhus

REDISCOVER CATHOLICISM

Our book club will meet on Tuesday, June 25 at 7:00pm in the Community Room at St John Campus. We will discuss

pages 275-313 of the Rediscover Catholicism. Come join us.

A Listening Presence Have you ever wished you had someone to talk to who would listen—really listen—without offering advice or trying to change or fix your story? Many situations, both happy and sad, can leave us with stories to tell. St. Gabriel BeFrienders are ready to listen. BeFrienders are trained volunteers who provide a listening presence. Embodying the caring presence of God and the faith community, BeFrienders are called to listen to the sacred story of another.

Anyone who has a story to share, whether it be the birth of a child, a new marriage, new home, or illness, loneliness, loss, or job transition, may benefit from a BeFriender relationship. If you or someone you know has a story to share, contact Mary Fran Karanikolas at (952) 935-5536.

Men's Club Softball The boys battled and came back against Holy Family, winning 10-8. Much celebration ensued; good times were had by all.

Next game: Monday, June 24, 6:15pm at Our Lady of Grace.

WOMEN’S CLUB NEWS Ladies:

Paint-A-Thon News St Gabriel’s parish will be taking part in the 2013 Metro wide Paint-A-Thon. The Paint-A-Thon is a program put on by the Greater Minneapolis Council of Churches and sponsored by the Valspar Corporation. Valspar inspects all places to be painted and supplies the paint. Each year teams paint between 60 to 75 homes in the metropolitan area. We have received our assignment, and since we are a new group they gave us an easy task. Normally, we would be assigned a house, but there is a person that has a large plank fence in need of repair and painting—that is our assignment. All the painting is scheduled to be completed the first Saturday in August—August 3 this year. Part of the team will do some pre-work earlier that week. I am talking with members of the St Gabriel’s soft ball team to see if they want to take on this ministry as a way to end their season. I will also be looking for a small team to supply a nice lunch for the painters. Call the Parish Office if you are interested in helping. For anyone wanting more information on the Paint-A-Thon go to: paintathon.gmcc.org/index.php. God bless, Deacon Francis Tangney

HEALING MASS Father Jim Livingston will celebrate a Healing Mass on Tuesday, June 25 at St. Joseph campus. Please join us for the Rosary at 7:00pm followed by Mass. Direct questions to Barb at (952) 933-8423 or visit our website at www.stgabrielhopkins.org.

ELEVEN WEEKS AND COUNTING… The Fall Festival Committee is busy making plans for this year’s event. And, I’m thrilled to announce that Mary Rasmussen has joined the committee to chair the Silent Auction. Thank you Mary! As of this writing, we need one more Committee person for the Beer Garden. This is a great opportunity for Vikings fans to volunteer and watch the Vikings play Detroit at noon. The Beer Garden is a lively place to be! Rhonda Pantila reports the raffle tickets are being printed and will be in the mail within the week. You will want to sell your tickets promptly and get your receipts and stubs to Martha to take advantage of the early-drawing prizes. Remember, all unsold tickets must be returned to the parish office promptly after the Festival. Failure to do so could cause problems for future raffles. Volunteer sign-up sheets will be in the pews at the end of July. It takes about 150 volunteers to properly run the Festival so every able-bodied parishioner should consider joining the crew. Your help can and will make things easier for everyone. This is the first festival with our new name, St. Gabriel the Archangel Catholic Church. So please, give prayerful thought to volunteering to make it a success….trust me you will have a great time! See you at the Festival, Romaine Bechir

RAFFLE TICKETS – Hey, TOGETHER WE CAN SET NEW RECORD SALES! St. Gabriel the Archangel Church Festival is an all weekend celebration starting Friday, September 6 ending Sunday, September 9 with our chicken dinner and raffle draw, but that’s not all that will be happening. Come and bring your friends and family and share the experience with our parish with music, food and games and more at both campuses, St. John’s and St. Joseph’s. You should have started receiving your raffle tickets in the mail. Begin selling them to anyone and everyone. Here is your chance to win $50.00 for selling tickets early. Hand in your sold tickets the Sunday before each of the drawing dates and WIN! Ok - bring them with you to each Sunday Mass and put your sold raffle tickets in the offering baskets. The three Sellers Drawings will be held on July 22, August 5 and August 19 with three $50.00 winners each drawing. Let’s SHATTER the tickets sales this year. Your sold tickets must be handed into the parish office in order to win!
