More harm than good? Roundtable discussion: Research on the factors underpinning growth in testing, diagnosis and treatment in Australia Thursday 10 August 2017, 2:00-5:00pm (local time Melbourne, Sydney, Gold Coast) In this roundtable discussion, we will introduce two new nationally funded studies which aim to investigate and address the factors that influence the rise in testing, diagnosis and treatment in Australia. Members of the NHMRC-funded Wiser Healthcare program and the ARC-funded Expectations in healthcare testing project will give brief presentations on these studies followed by an open roundtable discussion on the issues raised and their implications for research, policy and practice. 5:00pm Close OverviewofWiserHealthcareWiserHealthcareisaresearchcollaborationinvolvingTheUniversityofSydney,BondUniversity,MonashUniversityandinternationalcolleagues.FundedbytheNationalHealthandMedicalResearchCouncil(NHMRC),itaimstoconductresearchthatwillreduceover-diagnosisandover-treatmentinAustraliaandaroundtheworld.Overdiagnosisandovertreatmentoccurwhenroutinemedicaltestsandtreatmentsdomoreharmthangood.WiserHealthcarewillinvestigatethecauseandsizeoftheproblemandtestnewsolutionsintheareasofcancer,cardiovasculardiseaseandmusculoskeletaldisorders.Itwillparticularlyfocusonover-diagnosiscausedbyimaging(e.g.CTscansandMRIscans),testingbiomarkers(e.g.bloodtests),andgenetictests.

OverviewofExpectationsinhealthcaretestingprojectAustralia’soveralluseofdiagnosticimagingandtestshasincreasedsignificantlyinrecentyears,whichiscontributingtorapidlyrisinghealthcarecosts.Despitethisgrowth,weknowlittleaboutthesocioculturalfactorsthatunderpintheriseoftestingandtheoptimismforhealthcaretesting.Thisprojectaimstounderstandthesocioculturalprocessesunderpinningoptimismfortheusemedicaltestingtechnologies.FundedbyanARCDiscoverygrant,andfocussingonAustralia’snationalcancerscreeningprogramsandroutineclinicalpractice,itwilladdressquestionssuchas:- Howdoparticularsocio-culturalfactorshelptoproduceandsustainexpectationsthatmaybe

higherthanwarrantedbyscientificevidence?- Dosomefactorsplayagreaterrolethanothersand,ifso,why?- Howarescientificfactsabouttherisksandbenefitsoftestingpresentedandhowdothey
