5:00pm Close OverviewofWiserHealthcareWiserHealthcareisaresearchcollaborationinvolvingTheUniversityofSydney,BondUniversity,MonashUniversityandinternationalcolleagues.FundedbytheNationalHealthandMedicalResearchCouncil(NHMRC),itaimstoconductresearchthatwillreduceover-diagnosisandover-treatmentinAustraliaandaroundtheworld.Overdiagnosisandovertreatmentoccurwhenroutinemedicaltestsandtreatmentsdomoreharmthangood.WiserHealthcarewillinvestigatethecauseandsizeoftheproblemandtestnewsolutionsintheareasofcancer,cardiovasculardiseaseandmusculoskeletaldisorders.Itwillparticularlyfocusonover-diagnosiscausedbyimaging(e.g.CTscansandMRIscans),testingbiomarkers(e.g.bloodtests),andgenetictests.

OverviewofExpectationsinhealthcaretestingprojectAustralia’soveralluseofdiagnosticimagingandtestshasincreasedsignificantlyinrecentyears,whichiscontributingtorapidlyrisinghealthcarecosts.Despitethisgrowth,weknowlittleaboutthesocioculturalfactorsthatunderpintheriseoftestingandtheoptimismforhealthcaretesting.Thisprojectaimstounderstandthesocioculturalprocessesunderpinningoptimismfortheusemedicaltestingtechnologies.FundedbyanARCDiscoverygrant,andfocussingonAustralia’snationalcancerscreeningprogramsandroutineclinicalpractice,itwilladdressquestionssuchas:- Howdoparticularsocio-culturalfactorshelptoproduceandsustainexpectationsthatmaybe

higherthanwarrantedbyscientificevidence?- Dosomefactorsplayagreaterrolethanothersand,ifso,why?- Howarescientificfactsabouttherisksandbenefitsoftestingpresentedandhowdothey

shapemedicalpractice?
