6 more creative ways to use picture frames in your decor

Picture frames don’t have to be used to frame art. Sure, this traditional use is the most common, but there are lots of things you can use frames for.

These projects can be done with brand new frames or vintage finds.

In many cases, a vintage find will give you a charming, unique look that you just can’t get with a brand new frame. If you decide to give an old frame new life, be sure you refinish it the right way. Start by using a sander to

remove all paint or stains and to smooth the wood. Then, use paint or stain to update it. If you are painting several frames, consider using a paint spray

system to make its easy to cover a lot of frames with a smooth, even coat.

1. Functional key rack

Add a painted board to the back of a small frame and then screw a few hooks into it. Hang the piece next to your door to hang keys, a small flashlight or any other small items so you’ll never lose them again.

2. Jewellery Hangar

Untangle necklaces, get organised and showcase your jewellery with frame transformed into a jewellery hanger. You can frame a piece of corkboard so you can easily rearrange hooks for necklaces, earrings and bracelets or you

can frame a piece of wood with a variety of hooks for a more permanent solution.

3. Desktop reminder system

Create a desktop reminder for your home office, kitchen counter or anywhere else with a small frame. Use one that still has its back stand so you can prop

it up on your desk where you can see it.

Add a piece of decorative paper or fabric behind the glass panel to give it some personality and then keep a dry eraser marker nearby. This is perfect

for writing to-do lists or jotting down notes or phone numbers.

4. Standing pin cushion

Add a layer of batting or foam to the front of a frame stand and then cover it with decorative fabric and use a staple gun to attach it to the back. If your

frame still has its stand, you can create a standing pin cushion or you can use a small board, attached to the back of the frame, for a pin cushion that

5. Decorative fabric panels

Add some interest to a wall in a bedroom, living room or dining room with some decorative fabric panels. For this project, all you’ll need to do is frame some beautiful fabric and hang it on your walls. Go with a few large frames

to make a bigger statement and choose a fabric that is a detailed and ornate work of art.

6. Custom headboard

Custom made, do-it-yourself headboards are all the rage right now and you can make this project simple with a large frame. You’ll need a frame that is

as wide as your bed and some plywood for the back. Lay down a layer of foam on the board and then cover it with decorative fabric, wrap it over the edges

and staple it down before adding the frame. If you want, you can add some buttons or tacks for added detail.

Picture frames are great thrift and vintage store finds, so next time you find a stylish frame, pick it up and transform it into a new piece of custom decor for your
