Fulfilling Our Call to Be “Missional” - Inside and Out

As traditional Baptists, we are committed to being “mission minded”. What is the mission of the Church?

Some might say our mission is an outward focus—one of outreach and evangelism. Others might say our mission is an inward focus—one of nurturing our members. The truth is, both of these answers is correct, or at least partially correct.

Jesus’ final instructions to the disciples included both ideas. In Matthew 28:19, He said, “As you go…” This implies a

reaching out to those who need to hear the Gospel. Jesus goes on to say, “As you go...make disciples, baptizing...teaching…” This implies inreach and being good stewards of those the Lord gives us.

We cannot enter the parking lot at Anchor without seeing the mission field being built right across the street. To fulfill Jesus mandate to go to them, your pastoral staff recently met with KBC consultant Ronnie Raines. He provided ideas and resources to help us as we consider how to

“go” to our new neighbors. The mission field is literally coming to us! We must be ready. We hope to start a Bible Study in the club house across the street. Pray that the door will be open. We are planning events that might entice our new neighbors to come through our doors and experience the warmth and hospitality of our people—and tour our facilities. It's hard to believe that another school year is over. It seems like it just started. The Spring Concert was truly a beautiful music production. The talent that was displayed by the students was remarkable. Songs were not only sung in English, but also in Latin and Hebrew. Their String Ensemble was outstanding. No wonder they got "Distinguished" ratings at State contest. The Awards Ceremony was once again quite impressive. Thirteen of the twenty-four graduating seniors received scholarships totaling $1.3 million. They ranged from tuition to a full scholarship. Most of them will be attending the University of Kentucky or Asbury in the

fall. Congratulations Seniors!! The Senior Chapel brought tears to many of our eyes. ( I just happened to be substituting that day.) Prayer Corner Consider the following points and scripture refer-ences as you seek to pray more effectually for one another-our church family, all believers everywhere, the lost and unsaved, and those who persecute us: 1. Confess sin and let the blood of Christ cleanse in preparation for prayer. Prayer must flow from a clean vessel. Ps. 66.18 2. Be so tied to the mind of Christ that your thoughts are Christ's thoughts about the embattled saint or situa-tion. Isaiah 26:3 3. Be motivated by love for

God and a true desire to help others. Heb. 6:10, 1 Peter 3:8,9 4. Pray fervently to be led by the Holy Spirit for the exact needs of the one or situation for whom you are praying. Math. 7:7-12 5. Agree in prayer with others. Math. 18:19-20 6. Determine to saturate a problem in prayer. Luke 18:1 7. Pray with the "Authority" you have in Christ in order to bind the power of Satan. Eph. 6:12-13 8. Pray in faith and claim victory. Heb. 11:6-James

5:15 9. Use scripture as you pray for others. In this way you "Pray in the Spirit" which is in agreement with the will and promises of God for individuals and circumstances. Praying for one another and thanking people for being in our lives are pow-erful ways to bless and love all people. Prayer points us to value all God's interests in the world as we (Anchor) seek to meet human needs and claim spiritual victory for His Glory.

Preparing Your Family for Worship

As we continue looking at important functions of the family, this month we will focus on how your family can prepare for the corporate worship of God’s people. Joel Beeke in his book The Family at Church states, “The Puri-tans said that preparation for worship should begin on Saturday evening. Just as people baked bread on Saturday evening so it would be warm on Sun-day morning, so people should study the Word on Saturday evenings so that their hearts would be warm for worship on Sunday.” We should in-deed prepare for worship on Saturdays but in a very real sense, preparation for

corporate worship hap-pens throughout the week. But how can we specifically prepare our families for corporate worship? Beeke gives us several practical steps. 1. Prepare yourself and your family with prayer. Before your fam-ily comes together to worship on Sunday, pray for the worship service. Spend time praying for those who will be in at-tendance. Pray for our choir, musicians, and worship leader. Pray for the preacher who will bring God’s word to His people. Finally, pray that we would meet God in a very special way each Sunday morning.

2. Come with a hearty appetite for the Word. At Anchor, we have several scripture readings during our worship time. Read and study those passages on Saturday evening with your family. 3. Meditate on the im-portance of the preached word. Romans 10:13-16 states that salvation comes through faith, and faith comes through hear-ing God’s Word. Parents, teach your children the importance of hearing God’s word. After wor-ship, discuss the sermon as a family. These are just a few things you can do each week to prepare your family for worship.

WMU News The 2012-14 emphasis for WMU is “The Story Lives On, Celebrate-Connect-Commit”. The celebration of the 125th anniversary of WMU will officially begin at the WMU Annual Meeting in Houston, TX in June. Each of us has a story to tell of our walk with Christ. Who has influenced us and what new chapter God will write in our lives in the years to come? One person that had an influence on so many people’s lives was Julia Woodward, the mother of our own Bill Woodward. Julia Elizabeth Powell was born on February 24, 1905 and grew up on a farm in Woodford County. She was the only child of Mr. and Mrs. William J. Powell. At 8 years of age she accepted Christ as her savior during a revival in the Mt. Vernon Baptist Church. In order to respond Julia had to push past her Sunday School teacher, her mother, to go down the aisle. As she did this the entire class followed and thus her leadership of others in the Lord’s service began at an early age. Julia was a pastor’s wife and WMU leader in addition to many other Christian

endeavors. She served two times as president of the Kentucky WMU and twice as president of the Elkhorn Association WMU. In 1961 she was a leader in the establishment of a yearly offering for associational missions. In 1981, as an expression of love and appreciation, the annual missions offering that is taken by the Elkhorn Baptist Association for local missions was named for Julia Woodward, the “Julia Woodward Mission Offering”. The associations goal for the Julia Woodward Offering for 2013 is $27,700. The offering will be spent on the following projects: Scholarships---$6900 (one of which was received in 2012 by our own Jasmine Lawson); Baptist Campus Ministries---$1100; Race Track Ministry---$500; Friendship International--$500; Irishtown Mission---$2200; Elkhorn Association Summer Missionaries---$5200; Elkhorn Association Mission Projects, Hot Meal Ministries, Feed the Hungry, Toy Project, Hispanic Ministry---$10,200; WMU Expenses---$700; and Julia Woodward

“Celebrating Mission”---$400. There are so many worthy projects that we can see the benefit of right in our own community. Please help us reach the goal and help provide for the many needs. Anchor’s goal for this offering is $2000. In the June 9th bulletin there will be envelopes for you in which to place your Julia Woodward Offering. Please prayerfully consider making a contribution. Psalm 37:3-5 says, “Trust in the Lord and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture. Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord; trust in Him, and He will do this: He will make your righteousness shine like the dawn, the justice of your cause like the noonday sun”. Our 2012-14 WMU theme to Celebrate-Connect-Commit follows right along with this verse. If you are not already involved in Anchor’s WMU we would love for you to join us. We offer you the opportunity to: Celebrate- Connect- Commit !!

Anchor Baptist Church

Fulfilling Our Call to Be “Missional” - Inside and Out, continued more about them in the coming days.

We must also consider the inreach concept as well. Suppose the Lord uses our outreach efforts to bring new folks to Anchor, and I believe He will. How will we welcome them? Beyond that, how will we disciple and teach them? How will we nurture them?

We already have significant ministries in place to help fulfill this inreach mandate. Our Sunday School, with multiple small group Bible studies, is vital. We have children’s missions, WMU, men’s and women’s ministry. We have youth ministry on Wednesdays and Sunday afternoons. We have mid-week Bible study and prayer meeting. Our

Sanctuary Choir, Youth Choir, and Children’s Choir, along with the orchestra (seasonally) give music opportunities to all ages. With these ministries in place, we have a strong foundation on which to build. But is there more that needs to be done to reach the young families coming our way?

Believing that reaching young families will require us to have a stronger family emphasis and ministry for children, our Family Ministry Council has recommended and received approval at the May business meeting to start the AWANA ministry. This weekly meeting for children will begin in the fall on Sunday evenings. Statistics indicate that we can expect

from 67 to 75 percent of our Vacation Bible School enrollment to take part. If this is the case, we may have 50 to 60 children involved in the first month of this ministry.

Surveys tell us that between 75 and 80 percent of young people will go off to college and leave the church behind. Some will come back later in life. But many will not. AWANA reports that 93 percent of children who emerge from this ministry are retained as active participants in the lives of their churches.

We are developing other ministry ideas as well. What will God do with Anchor? Are we ready to open our arms to welcome new folks? We must be prepared—inside and out!
