The Commonwealth treasures and respects this wealth of diversity. Connecting cultures is more, however, than observing others and the ways in which they express themselves. This year, our Commonwealth focus seeks to explore how we can share and strengthen the bond of Commonwealth citizenship we already enjoy by using our cultural connections to help bring us even closer together, as family and friends across the globe. To support this theme, a special song has been composed for the Commonwealth, ‘Stronger as One’. There are any number of ways in which that single piece of music alone can be played or sung anywhere in the Commonwealth. And by sharing the same music with our own personal interpretations and contributions, the wonderful human attribute of imagination is nourished, and we gain insights of understanding and appreciation of others. This is our opportunity to celebratethe rich cu ltural diversity of theCommonwealth and what this enrichmentmeans to us as individuals. Our variouscultures and the ways we express the marewhat set us apart: we proudly use music, dance, literature, art and other means toexpress our cultural identities as individualsandcommunities.‘Connecting Cultures’ is about appreciatingand celebrating these ways in which otherslive their lives and express themselves. Andit is about much more than that too. It isabout exploring howwe can bring cultures

together, how we can connect the minorder to learn, to deepen the appreciationwehaveof oneanother.‘Connecting Cultures’ encourages us toexplore how we can use culture to buildbridges of exchangeandunderstanding.Wewant these links to be strengthened in newandspecialways in 2012.‘Connecting Cultures’ also gives us aninsight into the richness thatmakes upeachindividual Commonwealth citizen. Byovercoming the limited way of seeingpeople only in terms of ethnicity, gender, faith, or some other single strand of theiridentity, we find common bonds thatexpandthe senseof our identity in all itscomplexity andwonderful variety. It is fitting, in this The Queen’s DiamondJubilee year, to pay tribute to the uniquecontribution that Her Majesty has made topromot ing understand ing and tostrengthening links in theCommonwealth. The Queen as the Head of theCommonwealth is the symbol of our unityandfreeassociationwitheachother. Her Majesty’s belief in our sharedvalues and collective identity continues toinspire risinggenerationsto build for a secure future inwhich there isequity andfreedomofopportunity. As Commonwealth citizens we can all findstrength in our diversity as well as ourcommonality; we can draw on mutualsupport and gain from shared experienceby working together in a variety of ways tomultiply the collective and beneficialinfluenceof ‘ConnectingCultures’.

Today CMShas the unprecedented record ofoutstanding achievements whichmake itthe most sought after schools in the country. With a Guinness World Record of over42,000 students as the world's largest school by pupils in a single city and winner ofUNESCO prize for peace education 2002, CMS has already left other schools waybehind in imparting a holistic educational and creating a congenial educationalenvironment in the city of Lucknow. Among the list of awards and honours won byCMSand its Founders, apart fromtheGuinnessWorldRecordandUNESCOPeace Prizeare Gusi Peace Prize 2011, Sanskriti Samman in Norway, Key to City of GeorgetownKantucky, USA, Adhi Abadi Women Achiever’s Award, Derozio Award, ComputerExcellence Awardand several others.

CMS education is not restricted to rote learning or only learning the 3 R’s - reading, writing and arithmetic. It believes that education is the lighting up of a fire, ignitingthe curiosity of a child andmaking him eager to learn, to find, to seek and to discover. In terms of academic excellence, in 2011, out of 4109 students who sat for the ISC andICSE Board Examinations, 983 students secured 90% to 98.20% marks in aggregate(24%). 874 selections were made in various prestigious engineering, medical andprofessional colleges of India andabroad. This clearly shows howeasily CMS studentstranslate into a strong work force that is eager to work for upliftment of humanity asdoctors, engineers, scientists administratorsand leaders.

CMS students are trained to become Total Quality Persons (TQP) and Total QualityManagers (TQM) They build up strong characters imbibing universal values, globalunderstanding, excellence in all things, and service to humanity. On this firmfoundation, the educational edifice is set up with four pillars of education viz.Knowledge, Wisdom, Spiritual Perception and Eloquent Speech. CMS believes thatevery child is potentially the light of theworld but it may well become the cause of itsdarkness, wherefore, the question of meaningful education may be accounted as ofprimary importance. CMS students can adapt to any country as they harbour no falseprejudices and their minds are free from discrimination on the basis of caste, creed, race and colour. They are trained tobecomeworld leaderswhocan change thedestinyof mankind and unite the, earth as one global family, thus fulfilling the ancient Vedicideal of thewholeearth is but one family.

CMS is the only institutionwhich continuously trains its teachers to sharpen their skillsandupdate their knowledge. Knowledgeunless refreshedandused canget rusted.Wehave several programmes like Ed Leadership, Pre-primary and Primary Principal'sConference and teachers training courses throughout the year to make our teachersshine in knowledge and wisdom and impart the best value-based education tochildren.

Experts from USA and U.K. are invited to conduct teacher training programmes atCMS. This free exchange of knowledge is like a breath of fresh air that spreads in allCMScampusesand instills newlife into theheartsandmindsof students.

Besides these, CMS employs newand innovative techniques to teach the students theway they want to learn. It encourages International Exchange programmes andmultimedia learning tobring knowledge to thedoorstepofeach child.

My experience for a lifetime

Bring a Change

An unforgettable Children’s Day

What Makes a Dad?

Dear CMS

Some experiences stay with us for the rest of our lives. Theytend to change the way we think, alter the way we see theworld, and colour our perspective. One such experience wasthe International Conference of Chief Justices of the World2010. This meeting of legal luminaries and judges from allaround the world was held to impress upon them theimportanceofunity of the judiciary and the role it has to playto propagate nuclear disarmament. I attended the three daylong discussions and was amazed at how strongly peoplefrom all over the world felt about the issue. Disarmament isthe only way forward. Even after such humungousdifferences in background, lifestyle and set up, the messagewhich came across was surprisingly unified. The experienceled me to strongly believe that if and when the time arises, the world will come together as one. The challenge, whichcame up, however, was to make us unite before that crisisarose. Bondsweremade, older associationswere honoured,

andacourse for the futurewas chartered. The conference was somethingwhich helpedmebroadenmyoutlook, and realize that no matter how separated we are,the wants and problems all over the world are the same. Themagnitudemay be different, but the problems are the same.Intellectually, it forced me to acknowledge issues which hadnever really affected me before. On the third day, I got thechance to address the gathering, and present Hon’ble DalaiLama with a memento for his visit. Building on thoughtsaccumulated in the last two days, my speech centered uponhow the unity being talked about could be the solution to notonly terrorism and international aggression, but also topoverty, hunger and issues like infringementof human rights. It was a truly eye opening experience, which had a greateffect onmymind.

Human beings have a tendency of complaining all the time.Majority of us are never satisfied with whatever we possess. We always have a desire to getwhat we don’t have.Well, it isnot wrong to fulfill one’s desires but there is a limit toeverything. We should try not to cross that limit, whilefulfilling our desires. It’s not good to be a slave of one’sdesires. In a quest to achieve what we don’t have, sometimeswe miss to enjoy what we have. There are innumerablepricelessgiftswhichGodhasbestowedupon all of us.What isrequired is to just grab them! Nature is one of the bestexamples of this. Let us take the example of trees. Trees arealways ready to adapt themselves to the changingenvironment. Do we also behave in the samemanner? Well, the answer of most of us will be “no.” We always want tochange the situations around us, rather than changingourselves according tothe situations.Noone in the world cansay that he is poor; we also have certain inbuilt qualitieswhich make us unique. The fresh air around us, the beautiful

greenery, chirping of the birds, etc. can be enjoyed byeveryone irrespectiveof his financial conditions. Now a days,we are all so much engrossed in our activities that we hardlypay any attention to the beauty of nature. We have just soldour hearts to the material things. We all can easily enjoy thechirping of the birds in the morning but we are not ready topay any attention to it, why —because we have acuteshortageof time. It’s high time that we actually open our eyes and enjoy thesebeautiful things around us. We don’t have to go far to enjoythesenatural gifts. They arepresent everywhere aroundus. Ifwebring a changein our thinking we will automatically feel that oursurroundings have changed, they have become better. So,let’s bring this changenowbefore it is too late!!

Lucknow isnot a centreof science. The city can proudly boastof scientific activities and research owing to the number ofexisting scientific institutions. Students get full interactiveenvironment and interesting ways to learn the principles ofscience so that their vision is enhanced. Regional ScienceCityis a boon for both teachers and students. Schools shouldencourage students to visit the science city.On the occasion of children’s day, our school organized a tripto the Regional Science Centre for the students of juniorsection. On 14th November, when we reached the school at8:30am, we saw that the buses had already arrived. Ourteacher tookour roll call and thenweboarded thebusat 9:00am. It was a fun journey; we sangmany songs on the wayWereached there at9:50am.The first glimpse we caught was of the dinosaur facing theentrance. We were all very excited. The sight which greetedus was of the sparkling, huge city having three big parksaround it.Then wemoved on as our teacher bought the tickets. First of

all, we went to see the SG-MAX show.We saw a felon on theMystery of the Nile River. It was an informative showdepicting how the river Nile in Africa was formed and howbeneficial it was to the Egyptian Civilization. After seeing thiswewent towatchthe3-D show.We entered the hall and put on the 3-D glasses as the lightswere switched off. We sat waiting patiently for the movie tobegin. And behold, the movie started and a skeleton fell onus.Weall screamed and screeched loudly creatingaruckus. Itwas scary film of monsters. At last, when themovie finished, weheaveda sigh of relief. We were feeling hungry, so our teachers took us to theDinosaur park to have our lunch. It was a huge park full ofgreenery.Weateour food and thenwewent toplay. We clicked photographs near the dinosaurs’ statues. Then at2:30 pm, we left the Science Centre for our school. We wereenthralled by everything we saw. We enjoyed ourselvesthoroughly. Itwasavery informative andpleasant trip.

God took the strength of a mountain,The majesty of a tree,The warmth of a summer sun,The calm of quite sea,The generous soul of nature,The comforting arm of might,The wisdom of ages,The power eagle’s flight,The joy of morning in spring,The faith of the mustard seed,The patience of eternity,The depth of the family need. The God added these qualities,When there was nothing more to add,He knew that his masterpiece was completeAnd so he called it a Dad.

I came here in small shoes,Small plates with tiny socks rolled,You saw me coming inside,Keeping the little blue bag beside. The footsteps which ran on the marshes of thy field,Soon became bigger with me.You being still the same,My friends, my witness,To the mischief I did,And the achievements I made. The hide and seeks on your stairs,The laughs behind your doors,The beauty in your trees,The games in your gardens,And punishments on your field.I changed from a pencil to a pen,But you remain stuck to the jewel of my heart.Much more like a gem,You know everything though silent. You see everything still you don’t,You hold secrets which remain concealed.Under your tables hiding me, I kneeled. Now I stand as a girl mature,Have to leave you for another innings for lures. But the memories I always will keep,Of the lake of your silence in the class I sleep. You are not my school, but my second house,You are not my legs but my bone. It’s because of you I stand,That’s why I worship your holy land. The benediction of having my days in you,Is the reward I keep,And the memories which I hold,Would never be the ones I would lose,Till I die,And till I sleep.

Hard WorkHard work is the key to success. From the day we begin tounderstand things we are told to do hard work. First ourparents tell us to do hard work. At the age of three or fouryears we join the school and the first very lesson by theteachers is to do hard work. Teachers and parents encourageus to do hard work. But here hard work does not meancarrying big and heavy boxes. We have to do our homeworksolving problems, preparing for exams etc. by ourselves. Butif we fail to understand anything we should take help of our

elders. If we follow these thingswewill be good persons oneday. In our coming life there is so much work to do. But if wedo not work hard now, our life will become miserable. So,hard work will help us in coming days also. But that does notmean that we should only study all the time. Instead, weshould play gamesand takepart inotheractivitiesalso.

The elements of an epic summer go something like this: Feel good, look great andstayhealthy. All you need is the right fuel tomake thishopeful predictiona reality. Many nutritious foods are in season during the summer and can offer a refreshingand nutritious meal or snack for children. These 5 summertime foods that willbolster your efforts to get lean, add muscle, protect your skin, avoid dehydration, and improve your mood. Eat them, drink them, and get ready for the summer ofyour life.

1. Whole grains, including whole-wheat breads are high in zinc, which isessential for making collagen, a fibrous protein that is a primary skin component. Zinc alsoplaysan important role in repairing burnedskin.

2. This classic summer fruit-salad staple promotes healthy skinwith its high beta-carotene content. Beta-carotene turns into vitamin A, which is essential for the growth andrepair of skin tissue. To pick a good cantaloupe, look for a spherical shape, an even of"netting" on the skin of the fruit, and a mild melon aroma. Golden-colored cantaloupes areones thatwill ripen in a fewdays.

3. In a study performed on soldiers at Lund University in Sweden, garlic intake greatlyreduced the number of mosquito bites experienced in the field; apparently those irritatinglittle critters find the herb's scent repulsive. Mosquito bites, common during the summer, are not only annoying, but also dangerous, asmany cause the dreaded Dengue Fever. Garliccontains sulphuric compounds that exhibit powerful antioxidant properties that protectmany parts of the body--including the cardiovascular system--from free radicals and relateddiseases.

4. Spinach, coriander and mint are rich in vitamin A--as well as vitaminC-which provides antioxidant protection against sun damage, and B vitamins, which helpprevent dry skin, rashes, itchingandskindiseases.

5. One of the most common vegetables in summer is the tomato. The manyvarieties of tomatoes come in several different sizes. You can use tomatoes to prepare afresh salsa that is loaded with vitamin C. Chop the tomatoes and combine in a bowl withminced onion, lime juice and coriander. Serve with other fresh summer vegetables such ascucumberorbell peppers.Excessive heat in the summer can seriously upset the body, causing irritability, sleep

problems, exhaustionand lack of concentration, amongother things. But food and drink have a big part to play in helping your body keep cool and healthy during

the heat. So follow the above guidelinesand eat these foods to survive the sizzling temperatures.
