The Monthly Weather Review - Australia is produced by the Bureau of Meteorology to provide a concise but informativeoverview of the temperatures, rainfall and significant weather events in Australia for the month. To keep the Monthly Weather Review as timely as possible, much of the information is based on electronic reports. Althoughevery effort is made to ensure the accuracy of these reports, the results can be considered only preliminary until completequality control procedures have been carried out. Any major discrepancies will be noted in later issues. We are keen to ensure that the Monthly Weather Review is appropriate to its readers' needs. Units of measurementExcept where noted, temperature is given in degrees Celsius (°C), rainfall in millimetres (mm), and wind speed in kilometresper hour (km/h).

Observation times and periodsEach station in Australia makes its main observation for the day at 9 am local time. At this time, the precipitation over the past24 hours is determined, and maximum and minimum thermometers are also read and reset. In this publication, the followingconventions are used for assigning dates to the observations made:Maximum temperatures are for the 24 hours from 9 am on the date mentioned. They normally occur in the afternoon of thatday.Minimum temperatures are for the 24 hours to 9 am on the date mentioned. They normally occur in the early morning of thatday.Mean temperatures are the average of the daily maximum and daily minimum temperatures.Daily rainfall is for the 24 hours to 9 am on the date mentioned. This means a significant fraction of the rain may haveoccurred on the previous calendar day.Monthly rainfall is for the period from 9 am on the last day of the previous month to 9 am on the last day of this month.Maximum daily wind gusts are in the 24 hours from midnight to midnight.

Climatological valuesThe climatological averages shown in the text and tables are generally long-term means based on observations from the years1961–1990. They are not shown for sites with less than 25 years of record in that time, as they cannot then be calculatedreliably. Climatological extremes are generally taken from all available years of record; the number of years can vary markedlyfrom site to site.

RecordsThe tables of records are not exhaustive, as they only show sites with at least 30 years of record. This may exclude locationswhere a new site has been established; this means even some major cities and towns may not be listed.

MapsThe temperature and rainfall maps are intended to give an overview of the country. There could be discrepancies between thevalues shown on these maps and those at individual locations, as a result of the way the maps are generated. A wide range ofmaps of rainfall, temperature and other variables, covering the whole country and smaller regions can be found atwww.bom.gov.au/climate/maps.

Accessing dataTables of daily values for selected sites are included toward the back of the Monthly Weather Review. Data from many moresites and for other times are available from www.bom.gov.au/climate/data/.

Overview

• Daytime temperatures exceptionally warm forAustralia as a whole

• Second-warmest September on record for meanmaxima in Queensland, sixth-warmest forQueensland

• Cold outbreak at the start of the month, bringingheavy snowfalls across the Alpine region

• Significant heat event late in the month, withrecords set at many stations across the easternmainland

• Minimum temperatures above average nationally, but cooler than average for Tasmania, the inlandsoutheast, and the northwest

• September rainfall lowest on record for theMurray-Darling Basin as a whole; but aboveaverage across much of the west of WesternAustralia, Central Australia, western Tasmania, andthe western and southern coast of Victoria

The mean maximum temperature was +2.04 °Cabove average for Australia, the equal-fourth higheston record for September. Maxima were very muchabove average across the Top End and east of theNorthern Territory, most of Queensland and NewSouth Wales, part of central eastern South Australia, and parts of the Kimberley and northern Interior inWestern Australia.

An exceptional period of unseasonal warm weatherduring the last week of the month resulted in manyhigh temperature records being set in Victoria, NewSouth Wales, and Queensland . A Special ClimateStatement was issued.

Minimum temperatures were above averagenationally, with an anomaly of +0.48 °C. Minimumtemperatures were warmer than average for much ofWestern Australia, South Australia, and parts ofwestern, southeastern, and northern coastalQueensland. Minima were cooler than averagebetween the Kimberley and the central Alice SpringsDistrict, across Tasmania, and from central northernVictoria through inland New South Wales along thewestern slopes and plains of the Great DividingRange.

Rainfall for September was below average for most ofQueensland south of the Cape York Peninsula, NewSouth Wales, northern and far eastern Victoria, SouthAustralia south of Lake Eyre and east of Ceduna, andthe east coast of Tasmania. For New South Walesand the Murray-Darling Basin as a whole Septemberrainfall was the lowest on record, while forQueensland it was the tenth-driest September onrecord.

Rainfall was above average for large areas of the westof Western Australia, southern coastal Victoria, western Tasmania, and parts of the Cape YorkPeninsula in Queensland. An unseasonal rain event atthe end of the month resulted in above averagemonthly totals across Central Australia.

Heavy snowfall events at the start and middle of themonth resulted in an extension of the snow season toearly October. A maximum snow depth of over 2metres was recorded as Spencers Creek in NewSouth Wales, the greatest depth since 2000

Significant weather

Cold outbreak on the 4th

A series of strong cold fronts associated with a deeplow pressure system well south of Tasmaniaintroduced very cold air across Tasmania and Victoria. On the 4th and 5th snow was reported settling downto 300 m in parts of Victoria including the Otway,Macedon and Dandenong ranges, and down to 100 to200 m in the west and far south of Tasmania. InTasmania numerous highland roads were temporarilyclosed or made passable only to 4WDs. Some siteswith relatively short record had their coldestSeptember day on record on the 4th or 5th, andkunanyi / Mount Wellington had its coldesttemperature of the year on the morning of the 5th.

Some of the exposed coastal and mountain top sitesregistered wind gusts in excess of 100 km/h duringthe event. A gust of 104 km/h coinciding with a periodof intense rain occurred at Mount Crawford in theMount Lofty Ranges just after midnight on the 3rd,while a gust of 146 km/h was recorded at ThredboAWS in New South Wales on the 3rd and a gust of at128 km/h at Hogan Island in Bass Strait on the 4th.

Cold outbreak from the 7th

Another cold front crossed Tasmania on the 7th, withthe coldest air reaching the State on the 8th.Snowfalls below 200 m were seen in the south andwest of the State on the morning of the 8th andcontinued through the day. Several highland roadsand schools were closed, with snow continuing onthe higher peaks until well into the 9th. Winds werestrong and gusty ahead of the front, exceeding100 km/h at exposed sites on the 7th.

As temperatures warmed on the 8th, widespreadrainfall in the south combined with melting snow tocause marked river rises in the Derwent river basin, and some minor flooding in the Huon river basin.

Heavy snowfall was also recorded in the Alpine regionon the mainland, with the resorts at Buller, Hothamand Falls Creek reaching more than 2 metres ofnatural snow cover and extending their ski seasonsinto early October.

Strong winds across New South Wales

Strong to gale force winds whipped through Sydneyon 14th and 15th, causing many flight delays andcancellations at Sydney Airport. Severe weatherwarnings for damaging winds were valid for part ofthe State.

Clear skies, light winds and relatively dry airbrings cool nights in New South Wales

The passage of a high pressure system sandwichedbetween two cold fronts led to low minimumtemperatures in southern New South Wales and theAustralian Capital Territory during the 17th and 18th. Afew September records, and some more significantlate-season records, were set.

Strong winds in Victoria

Gusty northerly winds ahead of the front shifted westto northwesterly during the day on the 18th, with highgusts reported at Mt William 117 km/h, WilsonPromontory and Melbourne Airport both 94 km/h,Cape Otway 87 km/h and Mt Hotham 85 km/h. Atruck rollover occurred on the Hume Freeway atEpping, and the SES received more than 90 calls forassistance.

Severe wind in Western Australia

A strong cold front produced isolated thunderstormsand severe wind gusts in the South West LandDivision of Western Australia during the late morningand early afternoon of the 21st. Albany Airportrecorded a wind gust of 139 km/h, the third-strongestgust recorded at the Airport in 51 years ofobservations. Many trees were downed in the region, though fortunately property damage was generallyminor.

Exceptional September heat in easternAustralia

An exceptional period of unseasonal warm weatherduring the last week of the month resulted in manyrecords for high temperatures or early season warmthbeing set at long-term stations in Victoria, New SouthWales, and Queensland on the 23rd, 24th andbetween the 27th and end of the month.

Surface and mid-level troughs deepened over centralAustralia between a slow-moving high pressuresystem over the Tasman Sea and a low pressurecomplex to the south of Australia during the 22nd and23rd. Hot, dry northerly winds originating over centraland northern Australia first brought daytimetemperatures more than 12 degrees warmer thanaverage to the eastern half of South Australia andNew South Wales' west and Riverina, beforeaffecting areas further east on the 23rd in thesouthern interior of Queensland, New South Wales, and Victoria.

The passage of a cold front brought a temporaryreprieve across the southeast before a high returned

northerly winds during the 26th and 27th, resulting ina second pulse of exceptional heat with daily maximain excess of 12 degrees above average againblanketing much of New South Wales and southernQueensland on the 27th, contracting towardssoutheast Queensland on the 28th beforetemperatures decreased to near average over theremaining days of the month.

Multiple area-average temperature records were set, including Australia's warmest September day onrecord on the 22nd, reaching an area average of33.50 °C, more than six degrees above mean(surpassing the previous record of 33.39 °C, set on 30September 1998). State records for warmestSeptember day were broken in each of the mainlandeastern States: the new records are 37.7 °C atMildura, Victoria, on the 23rd; 41.4 °C at WanaaringPost Office, New South Wales, and 42.8 °C atBirdsville, Queensland, both on the 27th.

A Special Climate Statement was released discussingthe event.

The terrific heat, together with warm gusty windsstreaming into the New South Wales andQueensland, and the antecedent conditions of verylow rainfall combined to elevate fire danger indices toextreme in some areas, with several fires along theeast coast.

Strong and gusty winds in Tasmania andcoastal Victoria on the 29th and 30th

The passage of a cold front which helped to end theperiod of exceptional warmth was also associatedwith some strong and gusty westerly winds, affectingmost of Tasmania and exposed coastal location inVictoria late on the 29th and into mid-morning on the30th. Numerous sites reported gusts over 90 km/h onboth days, peaking at 159 km/h at Cape Grim late onthe 29th. This was the highest daily wind gustrecorded for September at this station.

Bushfires in New South Wales andQueensland

Multiple Queensland Fire and Emergency Servicecrews were at the scene of a bushfire burning nearBestmann Road and Bribie Island Road, in Ningi insoutheast Queensland on the 6th.

A large bushfire was burning in inaccessible areas inthe vicinity of Doughboy Road, Nearum Road, southwest of Bundaberg on the 8th.

Warm temperatures between the 11th and 13th,accompanied by strong winds on the 13th,contributed to more than 100 serious blazes acrossNew South Wales, including those at Woodlands, justnorth of Bowral; the 1662 hectare fire at Forster-Tuncurry, on the Mid-North Coast; Richmond Vale, east of Cessnock; and Black Hill, between Cessnockand Newcastle.

The Rural Fire Service issued an emergency warningfor the Richmond Vale fire on the afternoon of the13th. The Richmond Vale Railway Museum had traincarriages gutted and equipment destroyed by the fastmoving fire.

In Queensland a large bushfire at Burrum Heads, tothe north of Hervey Bay, travelled in a south tosoutheast direction from Burrum Heads Road towardsPialba Burrum Heads on the 11th. Fire crews workedto contain the fire, and an evacuation centre wasestablished in Nikenbah.

In Tuan on the Fraser Coast, a fire was burning southof Tuan Road on the 13th, travelling in a southerlydirection towards Big Tuan Creek, where firefighterscreated firebreaks and undertook back-burning tobring the fire under control.

Further south on the 14th, another fire was burning ininaccessible land near Gympie Woolooga Road andReuben Road, Widgee.

Exceptional warmth and windy conditions towards theend of the month led to elevated fire danger, withmore than 90 fires burning in New South Wales onthe 23rd, and 12 total fire bans in effect across theState. A fire to the east of Goulburn in New SouthWales closed the Hume Highway in both directionsfor several hours between noon and just after 6 pmwhen it was burning north of the highway betweenMarulan and Paddy's River. Other significant firesincluded one on the Queensland-New South Walesborder near Applethorpe which burnt 570 hectares ofthe Maryland National Park, and a 950 hectare fire atInnes View, 50 km inland of Port Macquarie on theNew South Wales Mid-North Coast, destroyed severalbuildings.

Synoptic summary

September began with a complex low oversouthwestern Western Australia that tracked alongthe southern coastline, before being joined by a fastmoving cold front as it reached eastern Australia onthe 3rd. The cold pool and strong westerly flowbehind the systems resulted in snow down to 100metres in Tasmania and moderate rainfall for much ofVictoria and Tasmania.

A high pressure system dawdled over the southernhalf of the country from the 4th to the 10th. before acold front and surface trough passed over WesternAustralia. A surface trough off the west coastdeepened on the 7th, setting off a cloudband andassociated rainfall in the Gascoyne and parts of thePilbara.

A separate trough and frontal system drifted over thewest of South Australia on the 11th, with warmmaximum temperatures ahead of it and warm minimaunderneath an associated mass of cloud. The troughmoved slowly eastward and connected with anotherfront on the 14th, bring strong winds to coastal NewSouth Wales.

A series of cold fronts crossed the southern States inthe middle of the month, interspersed with highpressure systems centred around the latitude of the

Great Australian Bight. A decaying front was joined bya small low pressure system in the Bight on the 18th,bringing rainfall to western Victoria and Tasmania onthe 19th.

Two complex low pressure systems spun up from theSouthern Ocean and crossed directly over the SouthWest Land Division of Western Australia from the21st to the 26th, delivering rainfall along much ofsouthern Western Australia. At the same time, ablocking-like high pressure system was positionedover the Tasman Sea, causing northerly flow overeastern Australia.

A cold front from the first low pressure systemsmoved eastwards on the 22nd and 23rd, enhancingthe northerly flow and dragging warm air from CentralAustralia across eastern Victoria, New South Walesand southern Queensland, setting many newtemperature records. A similar set up again formed bythe 27th, causing another blast of warm air slightlyfurther north.

The month ended with a northwest mid-levelcloudband across Central Australia in conjunction witha pair of surface troughs, delivering rainfall and coldconditions to central parts of the country.

Temperatures

September in Australia was warmer than averageoverall, and exceptionally warm for maximumtemperatures. Daytime temperatures were more than2 °C above average for the month, the equal fourth-warmest September on record. Minimumtemperatures were also above average for thecountry as a whole, although below average for thesoutheast and the northwest.

The mean Australian temperature for September was1.26 °C above average, the 11th-warmest Septemberon record and the warmest since 2013. Meantemperatures were more than 2 °C above averageacross southern and central Queensland, from aroundWinton down to the New South Wales border andacross to the Gold Coast. Mean temperatures morethan 1 °C above average dominated much of NewSouth Wales, South Australia, central WesternAustralia and the eastern half of the NorthernTerritory.

Mean temperatures were below average acrossTasmania, a section of the Alps and a pocket of theKimberley.

Maximum temperatures

Australia's mean maximum temperature inSeptember was 2.04 °C above average, the equalfourth-warmest on record. It was the sixth-warmestSeptember for New South Wales, the second-warmest for Queensland, and the warmest on recordfor the Top End (north of 15 °S). Daytimetemperatures were average to above average acrossall of mainland Australia; only western Tasmaniarecorded below average maximum temperatures onaverage for the month.

Anomalies of mean daily maximumtemperature in September 2017

Decile rank of mean daily maximumtemperature in September 2017

Temperatures were between 2 °C and 4 °C aboveaverage across much of New South Wales away fromthe Alpine regions, eastern South Australia, theGibson Desert, central and eastern patches of theNorthern Territory and most of Queensland southapart from Cape York Peninsula. Several sites in andaround the Top End, including Darwin Airport, hadtheir warmest September on record.

The warmth in Queensland was particularlyanomalous, with mean maximum temperaturesreaching more than 4 °C above average in a largepatch of the southeast from Charleville across toToowoomba.

The month began with cold days in the west of thecountry as a surface trough and cold front deliveredsoutherly winds and cloudy conditions. Temperatureswere more than 6 °C below average in southern halfof Western Australia for the first few days ofSeptember. This cold air was followed by a strongerfrontal system across the southeastern States.Temperatures more than 6 °C below average wererecorded in the Alpine regions of Victoria and NewSouth Wales, with widespread snowfall in thesoutheast; several sites in Victoria and Tasmania hadtheir coldest September day on the 4th or 5th.

An incursion of warm air ahead of a cold front movedacross along the southern coast of Western Australiaon the 10th and into the southern and eastern Statesthrough to the 13th, bringing temperatures up to10 °C above average. Cooler air crossed SouthAustralia on the 13th behind the cold front, extendinginto Victoria, NSW, NT and southern Queensland onthe 14th.

A series of slow moving high pressure systeminterspersed with troughs resulted in predominatelyeasterly flow and positive maximum anomalies acrossmuch of Western Australia from the 15th to the 21st.A high pressure system centred over Victoria

combined with a trough crossing the WesternAustralia and South Australia border also deliveredlocalised positive anomalies to coastal South Australiaon the 17th, with temperatures more than 12 °Cabove average recorded along the Nullarbor.

A high pressure system centred over New SouthWales kept much of northern and eastern Australiacloud free from the 20th, leading to very warmconditions in the centre of the country. The highpressure system moved over the northern TasmanSea by the 22nd ahead of a complex low pressuresystem tracking across the Great Australian Bight.Northerly winds ahead of the low dragged the warmair across New South Wales, eastern Victoria andQueensland on the 23rd and 24th. A dominantnortherly flow persisted after the crossing of the coldfront, and another high pressure system emerged, resulting in an additional blast of warm air in the northon the 26th and 27th.

Many maximum temperature records were set duringthese two pulses of heat, including the warmestSeptember day on record for Australia and New SouthWales, the highest September temperature recordedin Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland, anddozens of station records in New South Wales andQueensland (see page 14). More information can befound in a Special Climate Statement dedicated to theevents.

An inland trough caused extensive rainfall and cloudcover in Central Australia on the 30th, withtemperatures more than 12 °C below averagerecorded around the South Australian/NorthernTerritory border. The maximum temperature at AliceSprings dropped from 38.3 °C on the 27th ofSeptember to just 16.1 °C on the 30th.

Minimum temperatures

Minimum temperatures were 0.48 °C above averagefor Australia in September. Spatially, mean minimumtemperatures were generally within 2 °C of averagefor much of the country, although above average inthe western half of Western Australia, most of SouthAustralia, and several areas of Queensland, includingthe Central West and Channel Country, the SoutheastCoast and Wide Bay and Burnett districts, and thecoasts of Cape York Peninsula.

Anomalies of mean daily minimumtemperature in September 2017

Decile rank of mean daily minimumtemperature in September 2017

Below average mean minimum temperatures forSeptember were experienced in Tasmania, theKimberley and western Northern Territory, smallpockets of the south coast of Western Australia andthe central coast of Queensland, northern Victoria andsouthern and central parts of New South Wales.

The first week of the month was dominated by coldminimum temperatures as a series of cold air massescrossed the country. Temperatures in northern andeastern Australia were more than 8 °C below averagein many spots for the first two days of September, and the Australian-wide minimum temperature valuewas below average until the 11th.

Minimum temperatures became warmer than averageover eastern South Australia on the 12th under theinfluence of a cold front and associated cloud band, with the positive anomalies progressing into easternNew South Wales and southern Queensland on the13th.

Cooler nights then re-emerged in central and easternAustralia from the 15th, extending into the south eastby the 17th as a high pressure system over thecountry brought clear nights. Some patches near theQueensland/Northern Territory border were more than10 °C below average on the 15th.

Rainfall

Nationally, September rainfall was 33 percent belowthe long-term average, and the lowest since 2015.

Total rainfall in September 2017

Decile rank of total rainfall in September 2017

Rainfall was below average for most of Queenslandsouth of the Cape York Peninsula, New South Wales, northern and eastern Victoria, South Australia south ofLake Eyre and east of Ceduna, and the east coast ofTasmania. Rainfall was also below average betweenthe Kimberley and western Queensland, and a largearea of the southeast mainland received rainfall in thelowest 10 percent of historical observations, extending from central to southeastern Queensland, across most of New South Wales, parts of northernVictoria, and northern agricultural and parts of thesouthern pastoral districts of South Australia.

Rainfall was above average in large areas of the westof Western Australia, with an unseasonal rain event atthe end of the month resulting in above averagemonthly totals across Central Australia. Near-averagerainfall was recorded elsewhere.

At the start of the month, a series of cold fronts andassociated surface troughs tracked across southernAustralia during the first week. Moderate falls wererecorded along much of the southern coastline ofAustralia. Around the 7th, a surface trough and lowpressure system located along the west coast ofWestern Australia deepened, producing

thunderstorms and showers about the Gasycoynecoast and parts of the Pilbara district in WesternAustralia. Shower activity continued through thecentral southern interior of Western Australia, withmoderate falls reported about Esperance. In the easta cold front tracked across Tasmania, generatingmoderate falls in the southwest of the State on the8th and 9th.

By the 13th, a cold front and associated surfacetrough tracked over southeastern Australia, andproduced moderate falls in parts of southern Victoria, western Tasmania and eastern parts of New SouthWales. Another strong low pressure system passedsouth of Tasmania on the 16th, and an associatedcold front swept across southeastern States. Thesesystems interacted with upper-level troughs, and avigorous westerly air stream produced moderate fallsin southern and alpine Victoria, and westernTasmania.

A complex system of fronts brought moderate toheavy falls to western and northern Tasmania on the19th, and widespread light falls across much ofVictoria. A moist, onshore flow coupled with a sharpupper level trough brought shower activity andmoderate to heavy falls to the north tropical coast ofQueensland.

A series of weak cold fronts and associated surfacetroughs tracked across southwest Western Australiafrom the 19th to the 23rd, producing moderate tolocally heavy falls across most of the South WestLand Division in Western Australia. The cold frontscontinued to track eastwards, brushing southeasternparts of Australia, and brining moderate falls to muchof the southern coastline of Victoria, and in westernTasmania on the 24th. A surface trough triggeredshowers and thunderstorm activity over southeastQueensland on the 23rd.

Isolated thunderstorms from a broad, and complexlow pressure system produced moderate falls insouthwest Western Australia, and along thesouthwest and southern coasts. Widespread, lightfalls were recorded across most of the South WestLand Division. At the end of the month, a mid-levelcloudband formed over Central Australia as a pair ofstrong surface troughs extended from the northwestof Western Australia, through Central Australia to thesoutheast of Queensland. Moderate falls fromthunderstorms and showers were recorded overcentral parts of Australia, the first appreciable rainfallin the the Alice Springs region for more than sixmonths.
