ISM-Kansas City Education Committee You Have a Competitive Advantage!

Roxanna Swaney (Past President) & Joe Steve (Education Committee Director) Do you want to know how to set yourself apart from others at your company or in the marketplace? You can use your membership with ISM-Kansas City with its access to several resources to set you apart from your peers and competitors. While your management may or may not have specific development opportunities, you can include or create a platform for development and claim it in your resume or individual development plan. Taking the initiative to develop your competitive advantage will be an investment in you!

Monthly ISM-KC Membership Meetings

ISM-KC is scheduled to provide about eight monthly programs and pre-meetings. The programs and pre-meetings are specifically set up to give you one hour’s worth of education each. That’s two hours of learning and networking on current supply management topics per month! The current month’s program is always front and center on the home page of www.ism-kansascity.org. The newsletter will contain a list of what meetings and activities are planned for the program year.

ISM-KC Partnering Organization Webinars/Seminars

ISM-KC is partnering with other local supply management-oriented organizations to share training. The INCOTERMS seminar offered by the International Trade Council in August was a good example. You are able to use any other supply management-related training to hone your profession too. The Mountain Plains Minority Supplier Development Council is yet another example of a partnering organization that brings diversity and supply management value to you and your company. See the Helpful Web Links on the ISM-KC home page.

ISM Webinars/Seminars

You should be receiving notifications from ISM National on the current webinars and seminars being offered. If you are not receiving them, please check your profile online at www.ism.ws and make certain you have a correct email listed and preferences selected to receive these notifications. Most of the webinars count for one hour of learning. The seminars, which usually involve travel, often offer more hours of credit. Check out the webinars, seminars, online training courses, podcasts and affiliate forums by going to the ISM National home page > ADVANCE > Education and Training.

DISCOVER News & Publications / Resources

Accessing CAPS Research through the ISM website will give any project you are working more credibility. The whitepapers and reports are there for your research! If you’re not receiving your copy of the Inside Supply Management Magazine or online ISM Report on Business, please check your profile at www.ism.ws and make certain you have correct physical and email addresses listed and preferences selected to receive these resources.

CPSM Certification

Having or pursuing your CPSM certification may just be enough to get you the next job or position! Go out to one of the online career sites and type “CPSM” in the search bar. See! If you are interested in pursuing your CPSM, current CPSMs suggest signing up for the CPSM Exam Preparation course, which is held annually. The Study Guides are included in this 40-hour class. Reach out to [email protected] if you are interested in obtaining your CPSM certification.

CPSM Recertification -- How do I earn Continuing Education Hours (CEHs)?

To recertify, applicants must earn 60 Continuing Education Hours (CEHs) during their current certification period, which is currently three years. At least two-thirds of the points must be educational in nature. One-third may be earned in the professional contributions category. Candidates will be able to retake CPSM® Exams for 20 CEHs each, but only in the last year of their certification or during their grace period. ISM does not pre-approve CEHs for recertification.

Categories for earning CEHs are:

1. College Courses (taken or taught) 2. Continuing Education (taken or taught), including seminars, webinars, corporate training, etc. 3. Contributions to the Profession – Volunteer to be on an ISM-KC committee for an hour or two a month! 4. CPSM® Exams (20 CEHs each in the last year of qualification or during the grace period)

Using the resources outlined above, it is not difficult to acquire 20 CEHs per year. Create a file and save all of your receipts/certificates of all education sessions you take during the years. Make certain the number of actual class hours are on the receipt or certificate!

ATTENTION ISM MEMBERS

Nominations due by October 30, 2015

ThomasNet.com® and the Institute for Supply Management® (ISM®) are pleased to announce the 2nd annual “30 Under 30” Rising Supply Chain Stars Recognition Program. We are looking for young purchasing/supply chain management professionals who deserve to be applauded for their passion, creativity and contributions to supply chain. Help us celebrate the accomplishments of the best and brightest. Nominate a rising star (or throw your own hat into the ring) who is not only making a difference today — but is also inspiring others to follow in their footsteps tomorrow.

As partners, ThomasNet and ISM share a common objective — to give supply chain management and purchasing professionals the resources and information they need to succeed. That’s why we have established complimentary ISM membership as the reward for our 30 “rising supply chain stars,” and will send one “megawatt” professional (and the person who nominated him/her) to ISM2016. Through the knowledge they gain from ISM programs, these young professionals will be empowered to make an even bigger difference to their organizations.

Simply visit http://30under30.thomasnet.com/nominate/. And then stay-tuned for the big day in early fall when the judges will announce their “30 Under 30″ Supply Chain stars. We’ll bring the red carpet.

GLOBAL DIVERSITY AWARENESS MONTH

ISM-Kansas City is proud to recognize and celebrate Global Diversity Awareness month. This is great time to acknowledge our differences and embrace the diversity of our communities.

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month. This observance was launched in 1945 when Congress declared the first week in October as "National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week." In 1998, the week was extended to a month and renamed. The annual event draws attention to employment barriers people with disabilities still face. October is also LGBT History Month, a U.S. observance started in 1994 to recognize lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender history and the history of the gay rights movement.

Two ways to incorporate diversity into your organization are to host a diversity symposium or conference and to include a diversity statement in you mission statement.

We invite you to get involved with ISM-Kansas City by attending the meetings and becoming a committee member. The committees listed below provide opportunities for you to participate, and during the nine months we meet, members generally spend less than 2 hours per month! That’s immediate return on investment for the networking and leadership skills that result from your participation. Where is your passion or desire to learn? No experience required! You will find the work rewarding and fun. Please let Michelle Burdine know if you are interested ([email protected] or 913-577-5537).

Communication –Besides the managing the website, this group is responsible for sending monthly

communications to the membership, and publishing the newsletter.

broadest of responsibilities to find outside opportunities that will bring value to our membership by reaching out

to the Diversity council and other professional organizations in Kansas City. Their efforts will bring information

and programs to our membership.

Education –This committee has the charge to plan and roll-out larger seminars, such as the CPSM study

course, and manage the scholarship program. April is ISM Awareness month.

Marketing –The Marketing Committee identifies and takes advantage of opportunities for corporate, university

and student outreach. This includes social media and attending events to raise awareness about ISM-Kansas

City. We are currently seeking committee members and a new marketing director!

Membership –This team takes care of membership campaigns, new member orientations and membership

renewals.

Nominating –Become familiar with those who can take an active interest in ISM-Kansas City.

Programs –Programs for membership meetings are held January through May and August through November.

The committee is responsible for identifying speakers, tours and the logistics associated with those meetings.

Special Events (Golf) –Some of the events are larger in nature and require a dedicated team to drive. In this case, we have a Golf Committee that is responsible for giving oversight to this annual fund-raising event.
