We all know that money isnt the real secret tosuccess. But it certainly helps. Knowing that youhave a steady, reliable stream o money may notgive you endless happiness, but it certainly oersyou relie. A place rom which to build. Peace omind.

Modern women have ought and are still fght-ing hard or their right to economic indepen-dence rom men. But in the Western world, despite having won the right to work manyworking women are up to their eyes in debt, maxed out on cards, credit and living o theiroverdrats. Its become a totally normal way o

lie or an entire generation, ironically ritteringaway the reedoms won by previous generationso women activists and hard-working mothers,on over-spending. To some, Western women, weaned on dreams o independence, can seemaddicted to a diet o must-have ast ashion thatis turning us all into spendthrit beauty-junkiesgrasping at an impossibly unsustainable Sex andthe City Liestyle. And these are intelligent, edu-cated, so called liberated women. Why?

Social pressures still skew emale sel image tothe point that over spending is oten a quick fxto adhere to impossible ideals o beauty. Argu-ably, its easier to keep women in their place ithey are busy obsessing over the latest must-buyhandbag. Its easier to stay out o the spotlighti you shy away rom fnancial responsibility. For many women, this is what they are used to.

According to the writers behind fnancial make-over book, Sheconomics, women overspend or

a multitude o reasons. It does not just involveshoes. It involves guilt. Low sel esteem. Quickfxes. Compulsions. Says Sheconomist Karen

Pine: our relationship with money is a compli-cated one and usually one thats raught withall sorts o emotional issues. Very deep rootedstu. Stu like clutter that you dont reallyneed, but unless dealt with it can prevent yourom embracing success.

I any o this resonates with you, then this spe-cial Transorm Your Money Maker insert is oryou. Money doesnt have to be a nasty niggle atthe back o your mind. It can be your riend. For

In the words o Marie-Claire Carlyle whose Howto Become A Money Magnet workshop I attend-ed as her guest to research this piece: positivethinking just doesnt work unless you addressreality. I you have low sel worth address it.I you have negative belies, change them. Allthe positive thinking in the world wont make theblindest bit o dierence i you dont do that.

Talking about my interview with Secret MillionaireSue Stone with a girlriend, I gushed about howrare it was to speak to a star in the personal de-velopment world who was so candid about how

just goddamned tough their lie once was. Suewent rom coping with a broken marriage andmasses o debt, with the bank trying to repos-sess her homewith three children to look aterto becoming a Secret Millionaire in 10 years.

    The Sheconomicist Karen Pine

Hi Karen, tell us the in-spiration behind yourbook, SheconomicS?

As a psychologist Im particularlyinterested in the ways we all, romtime to time, act against our own

sel-interest and persist with badhabits. Financial behaviour is aprime example o this. People spendmoney they dont have on stu theydont need to impress olk they dontknow, and sometimes they eel mis-erable or guilty ater doing so!

On the ace o it seems mad butthen we live in an increasingly ma-terialistic culture that encourages us

all to live or today. And althoughmany people have bad money habits, they are oten reluctant to do any-thing about them. Tats because,or women especially, our relation-ship with money is a complicatedone and usually one thats raughtwith all sorts o emotional issues. Soits a ascinating topic to study andsince Im also interested in behav-iour change, its also one where psy-

chology can play an important rolein helping people and I hope I canhave a positive impact.

Many women claim moneyisnt essential to success, but it does give huge re-lief, stability and a senseof security that can helpthem create more success-

ful lives. What does suc-cess mean to you?

O course, money gives us all othose things but to me successmeans knowing what makes mehappy and living with integrity and

with all parts o my lie attuned. Tat

means having a job that enables meto be actively engaged in worth-while projects, enjoying a healthyliestyle and having deep meaning-

ul relationships with people who matter to me. Successalso means being able to get pleasure rom lie stu thatdoesnt come in a shiny carrier bag. Even though I loveart, style and good design, I get just as much pleasurerom a sunset, a gripping novel or home-made bread.

Isnt it strange that despite winningtheir financial independence, so manymodern day women seem to get into amoney-trap? Are women simply not usedto handling money?

Many women did not grow up handling money, beinginvolved in nancial decisions or being encouraged tobe nancially responsible. So they havent had very goodtraining or coping with money. Schools dont give usmuch in the way o nancial education either and per-

haps our parents inuenced us too. Fathers who thinknances is or men and mothers who collude in this

and dont take equal control can send the wrong mes-sages to women. Tis can lead to mixed emotions aboutmoney, guilt, ear, etc. as well as denial and the vaguebelie that someone, somewhere will sort things out orus! Teres also so much choice today that we get over-whelmed by the hundreds o nancial products pre-

sented to us. Tat leads to decision paralysis - were soscared o making the wrong decision that we do noth-ing. And usually doing nothing (say, when it comes togetting a pension plan or starting a savings scheme) isthe very worst thing we could do.

    ...were so scared of

    making the wrong decision

    that we do nothing. And

    usually doing nothing...

is the very worst thing wecould do.

Karen, what should be the first steps totackling money-issues?

In Sheconomics we show women how to understandtheir own money mindset so at least they can breakdown some o the emotional barriers that get in theway o sound nancial management. Tats an essen-tial rst step because once you are in the right rame omind to tackle money issues its really not at all difcultater that.

How can women get started on trans-forming their relationship with moneyand creating financial success for them-selves?

Psychologically - understand your own money mindsetand tackle those emotional issues or sel-limiting be-lies. We devote a ew chapters oSheconomics to howto do this because we think its so important. Practi-cally - know what you want and have a game plan orhow you are going to get it. Aim high, dont be araidto ask or what you deserve and play the long gameShort-termism rarely pays o when it comes to nan-cial success.

What are your essential tips for aspir-ing SheconomiStS?

Study and live by the 7 Laws o Sheconomics and youcant go wrong. Tere are lots o tips in there - such asoverpaying a bit on your mortgage each month, whichmakes an enormous dierence to the debt - using cashinstead o credit cards i you tend to be impulsive -keeping a spending diary - and saving automatically viaa monthly direct debit, so you dont miss the money oreel the pain. And put some time aside or budgetingand sorting out your nances. Amazingly people in theUK will watch 3 hours o V a day but wont even de-

vote 3 hours a month to nancial management, whichis so important or their lives. Put aside just one eveninga month to check bank statements, le paperwork, shoparound or utilities/deals and review your savings/goalsetc and youll reap the rewards.

    I made it my

    mission to work

    on myself, identify

    any negative

    beliefs and retrain

    my thinking.

What was a pivotal mo-ment of change for you?

    The breakthrough?

Te key thing was going rom be-ing a horrendous sales person notbeing able to sell a thing to to-tally changing my attitude andperorming incredibly well. I cantdescribe how soul destroying itis to announce to 60 people thatyou havent mad your targets. ButI realised it was my limiting belieabout sales people that was runningthe show once Id addressed that, things started to change.

How can women best iden-tify the negative beliefthat holds them back themost?

Te obvious thing is to go on aworkshop or read the book. Tethinking that got you into your cur-rent situation will not get you outo it. Its really helpul to work with

something outside o your scenario in a group or with a riend. Askingprovocative questions o your sub-conscious. Once youve identiedthe belie, you can do things dier-ently: being aware means it wontrun the show.

Why do you think thatwomen do not ask for whatthey are worth?

Culture, the way were brought up theres still an inbuilt lack o selworth rom birth that is aectingwomen worldwide that comes romcenturies o cultural attitudes.
