Fire Safety And Emergency Evacuation at

Lakeside Church

Introduction Lakeside Christian Centre is obliged under The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 to manage the Health and Safety of The Centre in order to ensure that any person on the premises is protected from health risks and injury.

This leaflet relates to Fire Safety and Emergency Evacuation. Please read it carefully. All staff should be familiar with the contents. If you are hiring rooms in the building, please familiarize yourself with the fire exits and these procedures before your session.

Be sure you know • The locations of Fire Exits • What action to take on discovering a fire • How to raise the alarm • What action to take on hearing the alarm • Evacuation of disabled persons • Good housekeeping for fire prevention

Fire Exits There are fire exits in the following areas, all are clearly marked; Ground Level - Reception, Senior Pastor’s Office, Studio One, Gents Changing Room and Children’s Centre Upper Floor – Main stairs outside Studio Three and Coffee Lounge (2 exits). Follow the green Fire Exit signs. If the main lights go out, the green emergency lights will come on.

If a fire breaks out preventing the main stairs being used from the upper floor, make way to the coffee lounge closing all fire doors and if unable to exit from the coffee lounge congregate there to await assistance.

Action to be taken on discovering a fire • Raise the alarm. During office hours, notify Reception of the fire location. Outside office hours,

call 999 to alert the Fire Brigade. • If the fire is small enough to be easily and safely extinguished, attempt to do so using the correct

type of extinguisher, but do not take risks and always call for assistance. • Never attempt to fight fires alone. • If the fire is too large, or gets out of control, or the escape route is threatened, leave the

building quickly and calmly by the nearest escape route. • Do not return to the building.

Action to be taken on hearing the alarm • Leave the building quickly and calmly by the nearest available escape route. • If you are a member of staff or are in charge of a group using the Centre, you must assist with the

evacuation. Please make sure your group leave promptly, remain together as a group and report to the fire assembly area on the grass area opposite reception.

• Wherever possible, shut doors and windows. • Do not stop to collect personal belongings. • Once at the assembly area, keep together with your group and find out if anyone is missing. • Leaders account for their group and report to the Fire Marshall.

Evacuation of Disabled Persons • Wheelchair users and those with impaired mobility should be asked how they can best be helped

in the event of an evacuation. Staff/ group leaders should discuss procedures and formulate an evacuation plan.

• Staff/group leaders to assist the disabled person in the event of an evacuation. • Persons with impaired vision may not see the fire exit signs and persons with impaired hearing

may not hear the fire alarm. They may also need help leaving the building.

Good Housekeeping for Fire Prevention • No smoking within the buildings. • Do not allow combustible materials to accumulate within or next to the buildings. • Do not leave combustible material close to a source of heat. • Switch off electrical equipment when not in use. • Keep escape routes clear of obstruction at all times.
