Unit 3: Colonial Vocabulary• Jamestown- the first successful ENGLISH colony in Virginia

• Pilgrims- English Puritans who were escaping religious persecution

• Mayflower- the ship which carried the Pilgrims to the New World

• Mayflower Compact- the written government of the Plymouth (Pilgrims) Colony

• Puritans- people who believed in the “pure” word of God, not what the Church of England said

• Separatists- people who separated from the Church and then from Puritans

• Quakers- a pacifist (non-violent), anti-slavery Christian group that settled in Pennsylvania

• New England Colonies- Northeastern colonies- trade, ports, and manufacturing

• Middle Colonies- fertile land, known as “breadbasket”

• Southern Colonies- southeastern colonies- tobacco, cotton, and corn

• Cash crop- crops such as tobacco and cotton that make the most money for a colony

• Manufacturing: the New England colonies manufactured the South’s raw goods and exported them to England

• Proprietary: a colony owned by one or more people

• Tuesdays Warm Up: What did the English believe they would find in Jamestown, Virginia?

Jamestown- Reading (even page 26)

• Circle: Dates and People

• Underline: descriptions of the colony (Who, where, what it looked like)

• Star: reasons the settlers felt THIS colony would succeed• Out in the margin, list these reasons (there are 7 total)

• Put a by negative experiences in Jamestown (there are 3)

What do we know about Jamestown?• Founded by the Virginia Company (a joint-stock

company with several investors)

• Men, women, and children

• Settled in the Chesapeake Bay near the James River

• The first winter was ROUGH- only 40 of the original 110 settlers made it alive

• John Smith was a great leader

• The Powhatans and colonists formed a positive relationship and they helped teach the colonists to farm

• You are given several historical documents to analyze• These docs will help you formulate an answer to the question• Use the data collected to support your answer

• Analysis of HISTORICAL DOCUMENTS

• Use the Documents to answer the questions in your organizer

• All of the documents will help support your answer to the Document Based Question-Why did so many colonists die at Jamestown?

Wrap up and Launch

• Don’t forget LOST COLONY STORIES are due Friday!!!

• Need: Notebook, Warm Ups, and DBQ Paper (from Yesterday)

• Warm Up: What are three reasons the Jamestown Colony would be the first successful English colony in the New World?

• Agenda:• Good things • Warm Ups • Mini-DBQ: Continue analyzing 5 Documents• Exit Ticket: Why did so many colonists die at Jamestown?

Directions: • Travel to each DOCUMENT together (there are 5 total documents)

• Work together to answer the questions

• Remember- ask your group mates questions; help your group understand the document; don’t move on without your group!

• You shouldn’t be roaming around the room to other groups- stick with your group!

• Once you have analyzed the documents and complete the chart for it- go to the END and answer the question for that document

• Document A: What inference can you make about the effect of tides on the health in Jamestown? Provide evidence.

• Document B: Based on this document, what inference can you make about the cause of this “starving time?” Provide evidence.

• Document C: Of the 110 settlers who arrived in May 1607, nearly 70 were dead by December. Is there anything in the ship lists that helps explain why? Provide evidence.

• Document D: Using this document, what reason can you give to explain why so many settlers died? Provide evidence.

• Document E: What generalization can you make about the numbers and causes of settler death in 1609? Provide evidence.

Exit Ticket:

• On page 25 (or 23) the BOTTOM HALF

• Using information gathered from the Documents, answer the questions WHY DID SO MANY COLONISTS DIE AT JAMESTOWN?

• Write using complete sentences and cite EVIDENCE from the documents that support your answer.
